omg...Chris Kimball doing street tacos in LA...oh how the mighty have descended.... Tacos are delicious don't get me wrong, but they are not a culinary standard that Chris Kimball would have previously showcased on America's Test Kitchen... I think Milk Street has really humbled Chris...which is a good thing

As a vegetarian who lives in the San Fernando Valley, there are a couple of taquerias I would recommend to others. The first is not strictly vegetarian. Most of the menu items at Hugo's tacos are with meat, but they have multiple vegetarian options, including the tastiest potato filling I have ever had. I generally order that as a burrito instead of a taco, with white beans, wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla, and grilled. The tacos do not include the beans (white, black, or pinto), but they can be added. There are also 7 salsas to choose from, ranging from a pico de gallo to a pair of habanero salsas. Other vegetarian options include crispy tofu, Ensenada style (breaded) tofu, soy chorizo, and mushroom carnitas. They also sell tortas, quesadillas, and a pretty good chicken sandwich, both real chicken and vegan. I go to the one on Coldwater Canyon, just north of the 101, but they also have a location in Atwood Village. The second place is El Cocinero in Van Nuys. They are strictly vegan. They sell tacos, burritos, quesadillas, mulitas, and tortas. Their fillings include vegan chicken, al pastor, asada, birria, chicharrón, and jackfruit. They also sell a red pozole with jackfruit, but it should be noted it is sold cold in 32-oz containers to reheat at home.
