L&H vs Salvi LEVER HARP comparison

UPDATE!! My 2016 opinion:
I have now been playing my Lyon & Healy Ogden for over a year, and I have made some further observations. Firstly, this harp has very high tension strings - in my experience the tension of the strings in in fact higher tension than a pedal harp, and much higher tension than a celtic harp. This means that fast passages can be challenging, and it is not ideal for playing celtic music. I have to constantly make sure that I am not becoming tense, and I have to work very hard when playing this harp. Having said that, I do like the tone of the instrument and I think it is well suited for a beginner/intermediate and even advanced classical harpist as it sets you up to have very strong hands, and if you can play with relaxed technique on this harp you are well prepared to play on a pedal harp! For celtic harp players I would not recommend this harp. I do manage to play celtic music on my Ogden and it makes a satisfactory sound, but the high tension strings prevent me from playing as fast and light as I would like to play. For celtic music I am planning on purchasing another harp with lower tension and a brighter tone.
I have a Dusty Strings pickup installed in my harp which works well and is convenient. I find that the bass strings of the Ogden are very resonant to the point of being muddy, with the result that I have sometimes struggled to have a balanced sound when the harp is amplified - to make sure there is enough bass sound without it distorting or becoming very muddy.
In conclusion: I like the tone of the Ogden and I think it's very well suited to students of classical harp. It also has a lovely tone for accompanying singing as it is warm and rich. I would not recommend this harp as a professional harp if you are playing complex pieces, and I would not recommend for celtic harpists. I havd the Ogden number 544 for years. They only get better with time.I went to the factory in Chicago tried style of harp they had. The Ogden stole my heart.

I just fell into possession accidentally/providencially of a Lyon and Healy Troubadour IV. I told someone who plays and her reply was that L&H were "not her favourite." This vid has helped to remind me that I fall in love with their sound every time I hear them no matter what anybody else says!

Definitely a difference. The Salvi has a "brighter" tone vs. the L&H that has a "warmer" deeper tone. So many variables that present themselves with the harp's actual construction and materials, esp. the soundboard. I would think it is about one's preference in sound they want from the harp. I have a L&H Troubadour C I bought back in 1977. It has been from Minnesota, to Calif., to Maui for 30 yrs., and now in Oregon for 13 yrs. So, it has been exposed to many varied climates and humidity levels. It has survived well and has a wonderful tone I think primarily from being in Hawaii and the stable humidity level that is there. I believe the spruce soundboard reflects the years of seasoning in Hawaii, hence the very nice tone it presents.

To improve the flexibility and resonance I changed the third through the fifth octave to folk harp gut strings and had it deregulated. The desired results were achieved by doing this.

L & H without a doubt!! Thanks!! But both are excellent harps to me. I am taking my time deciding on which floor harp to buy, if I only can find a second hand L & H at a reasonable price. I know nothing about harps but I know you play them very well indeed. The second harp sounded more refined to my ears. The melody notes stood out more and the overall sound was richer and chocolaty. It felt luxurious. I hope you enjoy it.

I agree with you (using only my computer speaker at this point), the L&H has a more warm, full sound, which I prefer as well. Even on a piano, I prefer warm rather than bright. I will listen again with headphones and see how it sounds. Glad you are enjoying your new baby!

I love the harp, but have never seen a lever harp played (always a pedal harp), and I admire how you have to deftly switch the levers (I thought changing a coupler on accordion was hard enough!)

Today he took his first harp lesson! I agree with you on this video, I prefer the richer, more resonant sound of the L&H harp. i've had a salvi aïda for ten years, ever since i started playing. It has been a great and reliable harp for as long as i've had it, and after ten years (it's second hand) it has barely aged. I must say i prefer a slightly warmer sound, so maybe if i were to buy a lever harp now i would go for something closer to the lion and healy in the video. but after having it for so long i can't help but love it anyway :)

I have a L&H Troubadour C that I bought new for $760 in 1978 in Minneapolis, MN. It went with me to several states and we ended up in Maui for 30 years. Unfortunately, my harp sat idle and untuned for probably 36 of it's 41 years. While on Maui, the tuning pins started freezing up and the ends would twist off when I tried to tune it. Replacement pins didn't work as this was a problem that I found out was inherent to many Troubadours from the factory. I had good intentions to have it repaired and had several conversations with Stephen Fritzman at L&H who said they could fix it, just send it to him. Well, I moved to Oregon in 2007 and in 2014, I fully retired and as a present to myself I decided to finally get my beloved harp repaired and start playing again. Stephen Fritzman was still at L&H so I gave him a call. He remembered me and laughed saying "are you finally going to send your harp in". I did, and Stephen took good care of me. All the pins were replaced and new tuning levers were installed. They had to actually drill all the old pin holes out, fill them with a special epoxy, then re-drill the holes and install the new tuning pins. The harp came back good as new with new strings and ready to be played. The repairs cost me $1,800, but was worth it to me as it was "my harp". I have since started lessons again although I lament the years that passed that would have easily gotten me pass my current advanced beginner stage. The older L&H Troubadour harps were very "solid" harps. I always say they built it like a tank. I mean for all that it has been through, everything is still straight and sounds wonderful. I suspect that the years in Hawaii and the perfect humidity seasoned the wood further in a way that the sound and resonance is really quite distinct and rich. It is great to still have my old friend with me, sharing with me the beauty and sound of a harp.

My vote's definitely for the Ogden. L&H has done a great job with this 34-string harp (compared to its predecessor, the Folk Harp). The Ogdens I've played have been very warm and even. I've also compared the L&H Prelude to the Salvi Ana. There is less contrast with these larger lever harps, but I still find the L&H to be a bit warmer and with more depth. I have also played some very good L&H Troubadours. I own a Troubadour I that I've re-strung in gut. It was retrofitted with Truitt levers, and it's one of the best lever harps I've ever played. 'Greensleeves' is so typical of Baroque. And this was a very pleasing effort. I thought the L&H sounded better. It was consistently brighter across the range, and had better resonance. Like all wood-based instruments, I expect that it to sound better the more it is played. Acclimatisation too is a factor to consider. You seem happy to have a harp of your own, finally. I am considering the purchase of the L&H Ogden. I love the look. And, now, I love the sound. Truth to tell, they are quite close in sound, but I prefer the Ogden.

Thank you for your insightful comparison! Several years ago I purchased an older L&H Troubadour V, upgraded the strings to gut, and also enjoyed it's lovely and rich tone. After much consideration I decided to risk fluorocarbon strings in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th octaves. The result was even more rich and beautiful ear-catching tones which you would simply have to hear to believe. Conversely, as my fingers are getting older I do see the advantage of playing on the Egan's medium tension strings.

I was actually wondering whether it would be worth trying to put nylon strings on my Ogden to make the string tension lower for playing celtic music... but I'm worried to mess around with my instrument in that way because I don't want to risk damaging it. Do you have experience with changing the other way around?

+Christy-Lyn's music if you are changing to a lower tension strings that will actually put less strain on the body of the harp. Harps are very strong to withstand hundreds of pounds of string pressure. the worst that would happen is that you break a string and that doesn't damage the harp itself. If you order the strings from Lyon and Healy with the correct lengths it won't be to hard. You can always check with them if you're worried.

+Christy-Lyn's music Hi, I have a L&H Ogden and wanted lighter tension as well. I contacted L&H who recommended that I use the L&H Shamrock strings. With those strings, the harp has a slightly lighter tone, but it's still warm. It's much easier to play the faster Irish/Scottish music. You can always e-mail L&H and ask the question; they are very quick to respond.

I am partial to the Lyon & Healy Ogden, as this is what I have, and I love it. Both harps are very nice, and I think you made a good choice with the Ogden.

Thanks for the comparison. I play the Ogden as well as the Series 100 Concert Grand. Both have the same pedal gut strings tension and spacing. I use both harps for gigs. I have a pickup on the Ogden and I have used it to play some pretty large venues. A comment about the "feel": The Ogden uses pedal gut strings so, yes, there is more tension to deal with. But on the plus side, it sounds more like a pedal harp then a harp with nylon strings or lever gut strings. Other differences is that the nylon string "rings" longer and the gut strings have a faster tonal decay (like concert pedal harps). So you have to use a slightly different touch. The nylon strung instrument sometimes needs more damping and "stopping" then a gut strung harp. Some folks find it much easier to play really fast passages on a lower tension, nylon harp as well. It is all about what music you are looking to play. You can certainly play those lively jigs and reels on the Ogden but slightly more effort may be required. But it you are looking for a more "classic" sound, go with a gut stung instrument. Another interesting comparison can be made between the larger Prelude and the Salvi Ana. The Prelude is strung with pedal gut and the Ana has a lot more nylon and lever gut. But if you are looking for a lighter sound, the Ana may be what you want. You might find the feel and sound more appropriate for Baroque music and certainly for Irish music. When playing this type of music on a pedal gut instrument you may use a different technique such as p.d.l.t., etc. Good work!

Mark Owen Martin Thank-you for your thoughts Mark! I appreciate your perspective on the matter. I have found my Ogden to have quite a booming bass that has a slow tonal decay. Sometimes this gives some issues with amplifying the harp and sound engineers have to turn the bass frequencies way down... have you experienced this? :)

I definately love the Ogden's sound, it's richer and warmer and makes me shiver... I love it! Salvi has also a good sound but I feel it less deeper and I like when I feel the harp sounds deeply in my chest. It's like it could touch my soul. :-)

As a bass player and sound technician I must admit that the L&H ogden does have a fuller bodied mid and low range sound, the higher register may not be as crisp as de salvey aida but that overal sound of the L&H is way more too my liking. That being said I must admit I know absolutely nothing about harps and playing them. but you hve made me curious so I will investigate!

I definitely like the fuller, warmer tones of the Ogden, but it was nice to hear what other harps can do as well. My daughter owns the L&H Ogden and she just loves it!. She just recently auditioned and was accepted as part of an Irish folk band.

Bought my Salvi Aida in 1985 and am still in love with it. L &H sounded lovely too, but wondering is it quite fair to compare a newly strung harp to one that has older strings? You played so beautifully! Thank you for this video.

New strings do make a difference but it’s fairly subtle, unless the strings are absolutely ancient. I think most of the difference you’re hearing in the video is the difference between the two harps. But very good question! 👌🏻

I am considering buying a Dusty Strings Ravenna 34 vs the Lyon and Healy Ogden, and this review is very helpful to me. I would prefer lower tension strings so I think the Ravenna would be the better choice. Do you know of other harps that are similar to the Ravenna I should also consider?

The Lyon & Healy although it’s new has a richer resonance to it. The Salvi harps I’ve tried in general the tension is tighter and often indelicate and inflexible with certain types of music. The sound of an instrument of course is very important but also the touch and feel are equally as important. Perhaps next time you can make those comparisons?

I can't be sure about the tension on the Ogdens, but my daughter's harp teacher told us that the L&H Troubadour, petite pedal and concert grand harps were all designed to have the same string tension, so you could switch from one to another with minimal difficulty.

Hi Christy I have a Andrew Thom Graphite harp now.. with a booming sound because of the material it is made of. It is blue too:) My pedal harp is a Camac harp great with an absolutely beautiful harp and black.

I feel like the salvi has a sustain that slightly clouds the melody being played. The ogdens is bold and clear all round. I like the Ogden. I live just an hour from Chicago. I'll make the drive and buy one soon. I Appreciate your video.

I actually prefer the L&H, even though I haven't played an Ogden. When I went to pick out my lever harp, I got to play a few Salvi's and L&H Troubadours, but I chose a Camac Korrigan. I think a lot of it has to do with the companies themselves, but sometimes, certain harps will sound better to you than others. But I'm glad you got your own harp!!! I also own a L&H Chicago CGX and like you said, the L&H's have a very resonant and deep tone.

Thanks for this comment all those months ago :) I've also found that there is quite a bit of variation between different harp of the same model. My teacher has an Ogden that she ordered at the same time as me - exactly the same model etc - and hers feels quite different to play than mine... I didn't realise there could be such a difference!

Loved the depth of the Lyon & Healy which was the hands down sound winner for me personally over the Salvi. The Salvi had a tighter exacting sound which some people prefer, but the difference it makes on the opera stage, can cost you a Job if a L & H harp auditions. Just my opinion. 😊

OK, I take it the Lyon &Healy is your new harp, as you did not say which harp was your harp. I also play the harp and I will say this. it is so nice to see our American harps played around the world. I like the Lyon & Healy not because I'm American but because the sound is special. I don't have a Lyon & Healy my harp is beautiful and also have a warm sound. it's the Marion harp by Stoney End Harps. my lap harp is also made by them the Eve lap harp. thanks so much and enjoy your harp.

Very nice video. I´ve got a Salvi Nicoletta which is also discontinued and I love it. However, comparing the sound now, I´d rather go for the L&H. Also, there is something very important, specially for hot countries like mine (Brazil). Because of the weather here, my harp started to warp a little bit in the soundboard. It was glued twice, but didn´t work. The only way I got it fixed was getting it to a luthier (we don´t have harp luthiers here by the way) and he added some wood corners on the soundboard fixed with screw, so that I did lose the harp. Thanks God is has been more than a year and it defintely worked. Of course it would not be the correct thing to be done, but the cost to send it to USA would be very high. So, I believe tha because of this wood corners the L&H, is definitely more reinforced than Salvi, in my humble opinion, of course.

I have a much older Salvi lever harp that still has the reinforced wood corners, but I see it isn't there with the newer ones of the same model...

Célia, have you considered getting a carbon fiber harp? They sound beautiful and they are immune to humidity and water issues. (The makers (Heartland Harps) have gone so far as to jump into a pool and play in the water!) I have one of their walnut harps, but the Carbon Fiber is one of my dreams since I live in New England and the temperature and humidity fluctuations make tuning a nightmare.

Hi Bonnie! Thank you so much for your comments. Yes, I´ve heard about it and the carbon fiber harp might be just amazing. The only problem for us brazilians, is that a part from the price of this kind of harp, which is much more expensive than the wooden ones, we have to pay 60% of taxes on the price of a harp + shipping when a harp gets in Brazil. I know, it sounds ridiculous, but it´s true, and this makes it almost impossible today for me to get a harp like that. I am happy that my harp is still playing beautifully even with the problems it had in the past. But definitely it would be great to have one of this.

A fellow brazilian, hey! About taxes, I share your feelings... Actually that's what's been keeping me from starting with the harp. I live in Bahia, so expensive taxes to import the instrument, and no teachers around, even for someone who wants to learn how to play it as a hobby, like me. I'm saving money to get one though. Happy to see someone that will understand the struggles I have trying to be a harpist. Saudações da Bahia!

I like the tone of the L&H much better. In general, I prefer fuller, warmer toned instruments to bright, crisp ones. I haven't played either of these harps, but I did build a harp, many years ago.

Huw Boucher Hi Huw. Thanks for your interest - lovely to meet another fellow harpist! I have been playing harp since August 2013; just over a year and a half now. I have experience with other instruments so I progressed very quickly. I'm now playing Grade 5 pieces (ABRSM) on the pedal harp because my teacher is a classical harpist and doesn't have any more advanced pieces for me to learn on the lever harp. So I still perform on the lever harp but I'm learning on pedal harp so I can keep on moving forward. It's been an exciting journey so far! When did you start learning?

I don't know a great deal about harps but I do know that Lyon and Healy are renowned for their high tension strings. Teachers of pedal harp recommend L&H to their students as cheaper practice instruments because their tensioning is a close match for pedal harps. As Celtic harps they are rubbish for this very reason that makes them strong as pedal harp substitutes. So, they are kind of a hybrid between traditional lever and pedal harps. They are their own thing.

In my opinion Ogden has higher string tension than most lever harps. But the amount of difference does depend on which Salvi you’re comparing to - this one in the video is no longer produced by Salvi.

Hi there! I do like the Ogden, but if you want to play Celtic music I don’t think it’s the best choice. Both Salvi and L&H have harps that are better for Celtic music. For example the Una and Donegal by Salvi, and the Drake by L&H. Out of the 3 I’ve only tried the Una and I really liked it, but I can’t say how it compares to the other 2. Having said that, if you really want a serious Celtic harp I would definitely consider looking into other harp makers too - depending on your budget you can get something really amazing from the harp makers who make folk harps as their main thing. For example Thormahlen is one of my favourites (the Ceili is lightweight and a popular choice), and I love Starfish harps, or Sligo harps are excellent too. Music Makers makes great Celtic harps too, I love the Jolie. If you can travel to a harp shop or find harp players whose harps you can try, it will really help you to make the choice! Even if you have to drive far, it’s definitely worth it.

@@LearningtheHarp Hi Christy, thanks for answering and for your suggestions, I did not know about the Sligo harps, I'll search for infos! Well, my budget would be max €3500. Living in Italy unfortunately would be difficult to me to order from outside Italy, so even if I think the thormahlen are wonderful harps I cannot consider them and other harp makers. I don't think that for my first harp a blind buy would be a good choice. Here in Italy usually harpists buy Salvi and Camac. I like Salvi quite enough, but definitely I don't like the Camac sound even if both would be on my budget. On the other hand via Salvi shop I could buy the Lyon and healy harps, which I REALLY like. But my favorite above all are the Dusty Strings that sadly are way too expensive for me. But since I love the warm, rich and deep sounds, I've thought that the Ogden may be the better alternative. I have listened to the new drake also, which is really pretty, but I don't like this biocarbon sound, and guess if it could be possible ti change the strings... Do you know if this is possible? And what do you think about the Dusty Strings? ♥️

Lovely playing and I agree that the Ogden is a nicer sound. It's mellower and fuller. I just wanted to find out if you have purchased a harp for celtic music yet? I have a locally made celtic harp here in Australia and i want to purchase a larger harp as mine is only 27 strings and I want to advance with Celtic music. What harp do you think is good for Irish music?

+Chloe Hi Chloe! Nope, I'm still saving up... I'm considering Paul Fisher harps because I've heard they're the best and I really like recordings made with those harps, but I don't know anyone in South Africa with a Fisher harp, and I'd like to try playing one before purchasing... but we'll see. It'll take me a while to save the money! I also know Starfish and Thormahlen harps are also great for celtic music, but I haven't had the opportunity to try playing any of these brands. There isn't much of a celtic harp community over here, so I'm having to do the research on my own!

+Christy-Lyn's music I just spoke to an Irish girl that I met here in Australia when she was a guest at a folk festival to do workshops. She recommended Fisher harps as well so I think they are pretty good. I had a listen on their website and they sound very nice. Unfortunately, the shipping alone from Canada to Australia would cost $600 plus the $7500 for the harp so it's a very pricing endeavour as I'm sure your aware. I'm probably going to resort to making my own with the plans for the Regency harp on harpkits.com. I've made a small harp already with success so I'll post a video when this one is made.

+Chloe Ok, pity. Yes, I'm performing often enough that it's worth saving up for the best, but it is really expensive when you have to ship the harp across the world!! My Ogden cost about 1/3 of the price again to ship it to Cape Town from Chicago. Another option for you might be Dusty Strings? I know they are very popular in the States. I have tried one and the sound was lovely; the tension is good for Celtic music. There are lots of different price categories so you might find one to suit you? Xx

Oh i just heard you said Cape Town... I bought my Salvi from someone in Blue Horizon bay in East Cape. I love it, but don't know at all the lever Lyon & Healy harps as my tutor has a L & L pedal harp, which was the only one I played on. Gerdes Olivier Good to find a fellow SA harpist on KZfaq :) My opinion of the L&H Ogden has changed a bit since I made this video. At times I find the tension is a bit much - especially for fast passages. I like the tone but it's not the best for every style of piece. Oh well, you can't have everything! Please let me know when you release your album, I'd love to take a listen. Do you take harp with Ingrid at Avondale? I am also in that position of wanting to move up to a BETTER harp than what I am using. I had never heard a Salvi nor a L&H played side by side comparison before. I agree with everyone else that the L&H sounds better, but I am also concerned about your comment (tension) of having to pull harder on the strings. I am wondering WHY you chose the Lyon & Healy - - what researching did you do to finally decide on the Ogden? I had been looking for a used Salvi Prima 38. Right now, my research has been swayed by your video, and I am looking to find a used Prelude 40 or Ogden.

Marvin Perry Hi Marvin. Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I missed your comment! My research was limited by the fact that there are very few lever harps in Cape Town (South Africa) - we have to import harps from overseas and it is very pricey. I would have liked to try playing a few different harps before making my decision, but I had to just work with the advice I was given and my limited experience playing different harps. So if you have the opportunity to try out a few different makes of harps I would definitely do that! I would have liked to try Dusty Strings, Starfish, Aoyama, Triplett etc. I was very interested in the Crescendo by Dusty Strings, but I couldn't find one in South Africa to try, and I wasn't brave enough to order it without trying it myself. All the best with your researching and decision making! I hope you find a harp you are happy with :)

***** Thank you for your reply. I also have had little opportunities to play harps, other than the Camac and Rees Harps... I have relied totally on my instructor's recommendations. So my final selection came down to the Camac harp. When I inquired about purchasing one, the music store recommended the ISOLDE model which they had just received on the floor and they loved it. The one they received was a Celtic configuration and I wanted a Classic which uses a heavier Fluorocarbon strings with Concert tension, so I have placed an order and will have to wait until June before I can pick it up. Dusty Strings is just across the bay from me, but I avoided going into downtown Seattle to try one, because they are overpriced (in my opinion) and they had a higher tension on the strings than I am use to, plus I would have had an additional 9.5 percent sales tax to pay - - that's enough to buy a very nice transporting case for my Isolde.

I'm not able with harp, also if i like play guitar trying to do in a similar harp way.. I often use a baby guitar (for intro in my vids), and that sound is like a harp (so i have done even quite songs, laterly uploaded).. Have you, Lyn really listen to some my compositions..? Some of which are fit for harp (above all, in my last uploadeing).. At now i'm impartial between liking.. I well know that any depend by touch (so for any guitar.. but almost professionists, for me, they haven't emotive touch.. they play always in the same manner by partiture, not by emotive transport..).. I image as many problem being with a harp.. so, just for six cords there are many problems of resonance by harmonics and accordature (any guitar can't be perfectly tuned in all range..).. Then, i say this, as by emotive songwriter.. to any music must be associated only a timbre voice, also if the difference each other instrument could be not much.. As happened to me.. the simple sound by a steel normal guitar, in use, you could feel it, as by conventional electric sound by touch.. So, in the same.. i do arranging using a flute by oak, that it seems as the high sing of a woman (even, for bit little modulation by a low note (of two instruments), you could do appear as male voice, as i did..really so similar to my monotone modulated voice, even..strange..).. As you Lyn teacher to me, for harp, it needs delicacy and sweetness in touching, but also (for solo part), a very incisive strong touch.. However, i like both the sound of two harps L&H.. Bye !!

Out of curiosity, were those older strings on the Salvi harp? If the Ogden had been recently acquired in this video, then it likely had newer strings. That would make a difference as well.

Does your Ogden have gut strings or nylon? When I 1st got my Ogden in 2008, it was my favorite out of the many I'd tried. However, the gut strings kept breaking. It got to the point where I just didn't want to play any more as I was sick of replacing stings. Then several years ago, L & H announced that it was ok to us nylon strings on the Ogden (when I 1st got mine, they said so). A friend of mine who is also a luthier offered to switch out the strings for me me & I do notice a slight difference in tone, but it is soooo nice to actually spend my time playing instead of changing strings!

I rented a Prelude that ate gut strings like candy. I think I replaced 10 or 11 over 15 months. I didn't know if that was to be expected or if it was time for it to be restrung. I m still trying to decide on what kind I would like to buy.

Yes! I don't have one myself, but I know of some good Celtic harp makers - some that I have played and some that have come highly recommended from professional Celtic harpists I've spoken to. Many people say the best Celtic harps are from Larry Fisher in Canada, then Scottish harpist Maeve Gilchrist loves Thormahlen harps, many great harpists including Rachel hair play Starfish harps made in Scotland. Other good Celtic harp makers are Dusty Strings or Camac harps. All the best!

the second harp has a fuller resonance i think, like it bounces across the room. the other one is slightly clearer/sharper. I personally prefer the second, but i also feel compelled to say youre a beautiful harpist, again. You play so natural, do you never feel pressure/stress when you record? Cause if so you dont make it sound. :)

Hi again Cal. I agree with your summary, and thanks for the compliments! To answer your question: my teacher emphasises often that I must not be tense when I play, so I try to abide by that principle. I practice the harp for a few hours each day, so when I know a piece well it does feel quite natural! I do sometimes find it stressful to record (especially when I am tired or the weather is hot or when I am disturbed by noises or visitors). I often have to do many takes before I have the final recording, so sometimes that it tiring and I do find myself tensing up... but practicing the piece a lot before the video helps because then I need fewer takes before I get a good one :) Ultimately I should be able to do a good recording in one take because that's how it goes with a live performance, but it doesn't always turn out that way ;) Did I answer your question properly? Sure you answerred properly :) I always feel tense when im recording, but still upload my full of mistakes take cause it costs batteries still (cant find a proper camera that runs on a plug where i live yet) Your recordings always feel so relaxed. ^^ I also practice my guitar skills alot every day and can feel myself improving every time so yeah, practice makes perfect in a sense. ;) Greets! a traveler on the road Hi there! Yes, I played piano from when I was 7 years old but only started harp as an adult. It's not necessary to play piano first, but it does make your learning much faster than a beginner harpist with no musical background. But you can learn to play the harp without piano background.

I cant comment on what it felt like to play , or the difficulties therein, but I definitely liked the sound of the Land H harp for this song, the strumming held the notes with more clarity and overall liked the tones better. Sorry Selby.

By the way, are you German?, your accent sounds so German. I think you will like the "Cantiga 1 of Alfonso X el Sabio" and "Rabenballade". You can play both with a harp :)

I have never seen a lever harp in action till today. The flipping of switches is liken to a pilot fiddling the switches above the cockpit. Can't harp have non switching levers? It looks weird to me harpist have to fiddle with levers...it look so un-harpist

There are harps that don’t have levers, those are called Pedal Harps. You change the “key” of the note with your feet instead of your hands. Pedal Harps can be 4 to 5 times the cost of a lever harp and not something a beginner or even an intermediate player would start with. All Harps are beautiful ☺️

I'm glad it was helpful :) The L&H Ogden is 13kg. The Salvi Aida is no longer being produced so it isn't on the Salvi website, but I think it is 11.5kg.
