1:36 ACT I
50:49 ACT II
The Víctor Ullate Ballet brings to its repertoire a new version of an important, internationally performed classic. Choreographer and artistic director Eduardo Lao has assumed the task of reinventing Coppélia, using his versatile company of 23 dancers to contribute his personal vision. He emphasizes the comical spirit of Coppélia while keeping the original score written by Léo Delibes in 1870. Lao’s creation takes place in a cybernetic laboratory specialized in artificial intelligence, where Doctor Coppelius is attempting to create a female android that moves and acts like a human. Lao’s
staging of Coppélia allows the Víctor Ullate Ballet to use its technical and artistic capacity, by combining various styles and updating a historical dance favorite.

This is clearly not your average ballet production, and it incorporates a hefty portion of humor and silliness. If your preference lies with the classical style, don’t waste your time with this. I loved the first act. Coppélia’s mechanical movements completely blew me away. 13:18-15:05 sent me to the uncanny valley. Absolutely spectacular. The second act is quite boring compared to the first and reminded me of the bar and party scenes in Matthew Bourne’s version of the Swan Lake. I was waiting for this to end with a bang, but it just kind of fizzled out. Could have been great, but it turned out really uneven.

It's Delibes, not Debiles, which is the plural of the French adjective meaning "weak" or "dumb".

The production of the POB was kinda far away from the story already, this here is just people hopping around. If you want to produce a 'people hopping around on stage ballet', maybe choose music and a title that is NOT associated with a traditional ballet?

Hopping around??? You make it sound so easy! I would love to see you hop around the way they do. I love traditional classical ballet and I actually really enjoyed this, the same way as I enjoyed Roland Petit’s or Maguy Marin’s versions. On the other hand, I can’t stand watching the Russian version as it’s all over the place. Paris opéra has had many versions too over the decades. This one will probably not become a landmark but to dismiss it as hopping around is highly disrespectful

I guess this is Dr. Coppelius as the mad scientist. "Coppelia" is one of my favorite ballets, with music composed by one of my two favorite composers of ballet music ( Tchaikovsky of course being the other one). It deserves much better than this.

Some great dancers but sadly lacking in a decent story line. This is also a ballet with a lot of humour. As is often the case in life: Simplicity = success.
