By the way Sarah, the reason why they put antioxidants in retinol formulations is not so much for the benefit of your skin, but more for the stability of the retinol in the formula itself 😝😝😝 So the antioxidants are more for the formula than your face, to keep retinol stable

Hi Sarah I currently use tretinoin, but i started my retinoid journey with retinols. My very first retinoid was the granactive retinoid from the ordinary - it's excellent as a first foray into retinoids as it's so gentle. After that I used the Alpha H vitamin A serum which is also gentle, but a step up from the ordinary. I then used the Avene retinaldehyde and then onto tretinoin. i have super sensitive rosacea and eczema prone skin and I took over a year to work up to starting tretinoin. I do recommend slowly incorporating retinoids, especially on sensitive skin. These would be a similar strength to the Alpha H which is around the same price and cruelty free. Of course there is much more choice now and if starting now I would use the Inkey list rather than the alpha h and the geek and gorgeous instead of the Avene. I think these are really expensive for what they are, although very accessible due to the fact these big brands are everywhere. Neither have tempted me as I don't really get on well with the products from either range. The review was interesting though. Best wishes.

Just tried Loreal's serum. Texture was great and the fragrance was not bad but I do wish it was fragrance free. It's percentage is actually 0.2% where I am and the price is what amounts to 24USD. Lrp rendermic is great too but it's like 50 bucks for 30ml so I hope Loreal retinol serum works well. I also use the sandwich method just in case even though I have used a 0.3% retinol product for a while now.

L'Oréal seem to be obsessed with denatured alcohol. It is in so many of their products, including products from other companies they own like Vichy, La Roche Posay etc. It is the main reason why I don't use their line (apart from the fact that they test on animals). They also tend to have denatured alcohol very high up in the ingredient list which means it's a high concentration.

that's not what it means at all and cosmetic formulations are much more complicated than that. Don't be ignorant and have irrational fear of chemistry that you do not understand. All ingredients are there for a reason and it's the formulation that counts not individual ingredients, that determines whether a product will be drying or not. Also a lot depends on whether consumers are using products properly according to instructions.
@glcork
@glcork 2 жыл бұрын
@@SueRosalie It has nothing to nothing to do with ignorance. I'm perfectly entitled to make my own decisions about what ingredients I will and will not put on my skin. There is plenty of research which shows that alcohol and fragrance are bad for skin - both of which L'Oréal in particular use a lot of. Ironically they will highlight the fact if a product does not contain alcohol or fragrance, but seem quite happy to load it into other products. In the Shaka fluid for example, denatured alcohol is second on the ingredient list, which is a very high concentration. Many newer and even some cheaper brands seem more than capable of making great products without the alcohol and fragrance.

@@Vegard1986 They’ve been working on it for 7 years, formulations are not as simple as just chucking a bunch of ingredients together, they had to do research first go demonstrate efficacy to achieve the primary goal of the product which is to prevent oxidation of sebum which contributes to breakouts. Also just remember they have to figure out optimal percentages, and how to stabilize that antioxidant at that percentage, there is no literature available they had to do the research. Spending several years developing a cosmetic skincare products is not unheard of, many brands spend that long including both big & small brands. Dire L’Oréal is not a pharmaceutical company but the amount of money they doend on research & innovation is pretty much on par with pharmaceutical spending, they spend 1 billion euros a year on research, that is not something you just brush off as insignificant, I have a lot of respect for their research. They also made a new molecule known as stemoxydine, that took many years to develop and finally make available. As far is the ingredients I listed go, there is no new molecule but we don’t know that yet cause we don’t know the full ingredients list. @@Vegard1986 I watched an interview with Paula Begoun, founder of Paula’s Choice and she had mentioned that they spent about 5 years working on their 1% retinol product, so it is not unheard of, sure Paula’s Choice doesn’t have the resources of Skinceuticals but remember they(L’Oréal) wanted to do something that no one else has done & that is to make an antioxidant serum specifically for oil acne prone skin that prevents oxidation, that takes research, they had to try a bunch of different antioxidants, then for the percentage it has to be the right balance between efficacy and tolerability, cause they don’t want to make irritating products(alcohol & fragrance does not mean irritating for everyone btw) base formula matters too, they need to try a bunch until the desired level of cosmetic elegance is achieved, they test products on skin samples at least 600 times before testing on real humans, then they do their panels to get feedback on how the product feels on the skin, ease of use and application. It is not as simple as you think, their product development is a lot more complicated than indie brands, and for Skinceuticals they really push the envelope, the products have to be efficacious so if the product fails to demonstrate efficacy they won’t launch it
