L3 Filmless PVS14 on no-moon night

I made this video on a night with 0% moon, and only partial starlight. I did so to show people that night vision does have limitations, even on "clear" (not rainy) nights, without supplemental illumination. It does not "allow you to see in the dark", it "amplifies available light to allow you to better resolve images". This particular PVS14 has an L3 filmless tube with the following specs:
35.7SNR
0.5 EBI
0.7 Halo
2531 photocathode response
64348 gain
zero blems/spots greater than 0.003" in Z1,2,3, no FPN
Filming notes:
The video was made with the manual gain turned up all the way for filming purposes. A LIF filter was in place over the objective, as was a mil-spec de-mist shield over the ocular. A Samsung S8 was left on "auto" for this filming. The images look true to my eyes, but keep in mind your phone or PC will enlarge the video images in size, which will degrade image quality. A PVS14 is worn very near the eye, and has a much smaller "screen", so in-person resolution is significantly better. Viewing this on a cell phone held at normal viewing distance will give a similar perception of image resolution as I experienced with my naked eye in front of the PVS14.

@@ToxicGamer86454 I have it for more than hiking. However you should know an IR illuminator doesnt work like a normal flash night. You can only see it from certain angles and if I do find myself if a dangerous situation I know how to practice light discipline. Its better to have an IR illuminator because you still need to be able to see. Night vision doesnt work if there is no light.

That's quite nice starlight performance. Much darker and you'd be counting single photons. With a 1s exposure photo, you could get them to stack to a nice photo though. Of course not handheld. I guess a system using one of those fancy gen3+1 tubes could shine in those conditions. But I never had access to one, so it's hard to tell.

Pozdrawiam Ciebie. Super filmik.

Awesome video that you rarely see. Any chance you could make a video showing how manual gain changes the image in varying light levels? This is one video that is totally lacking in youtube, could clear up some misunderstandings, and feed my curiosity being someone whos solely used 10160 tubes ever.

The only big difference was that its obviously green phosphor over white but the performance was pretty spot on to this video

While higher spec tubes do exist, this is definitely on the upper end, and the benefits of a superior tube would be minimal. I've owned better (39.3SNR, 0.3 EBI), and it was not very noticeable at all.

I find this quite interesting. MY first device i built uses a Photonis Echo tube (GP and at around 1900+ FOM) and ive actually went on on nights way worse than this. Totally dense cloud coverage and a zero moon night. Granted, i had a city maybe 15-20 miles away so the ambient light possibly was carrying over to where I was but under tripple canopy, my tube was pretty identical to this super high end L3 tube with only one difference and the difference all photonis tubes are no for...it was just dimmer. But its sooooo dark, it didnt really matter.Dimmer, brighter, im still gonna see what only the tube sees. I keep searching up and down on youtube if its REALLY worth it for me to buy a higher spec Elbit or L3 tube and my conclusions keep saying - its really not. Unless...someone can convince me otherwise.

@@UnobtaniumsQuickReviews Very true point, now im unsure what tube was in my issued device in the Army (2012-2016) and I have done ALOT of night operations but i find it hard distinguishing what I had issued then to what I have now (other than the obvious difference that I mentioned Photonis being known for and just a lower brightness from the tube...that I totally see). Maybe I just need both literally in my hand to switch back and forth? Maybe ill rent one in the future, take a class and have both with me and just flip back and forth between the two to really see the gain (no pun intended lol) ill get from upgrading my tube

I'm $1k into my journey of saving for nods and it really is hard to figure out how much I should pay for. After consuming some info and videos, I think to myself I might be happy with a photonis and then use the money that would have been used for an elbit or l3 on a good helmet and illuminator/laser instead. Then other times it seems like you should go all the way max specs buy once/ cry once. 🤷‍♂️
@UnobtaniumsQuickReviews
@UnobtaniumsQuickReviews 8 ай бұрын
That's tough. Both are a way. You can always go photonis and flip it later if its inadequate. Buy lightly used good spec tubes, so you lose minimum on the flip, if any.

As long as the screen cosmetics appeal to you, that's an excellent and well balanced tube! The reason I say screen cosmetics, is because you can have a lot of fixed pattern noise and if you're using it for photography, that would suck for you, stuff like that. I know people with 2700+ FOM tubes that hate them because of this exact reason.

I'm sure I could have spent a bit less for the same quality elsewhere but I don't know enough about it or the other companies out there to make an educated decision. I looked into them, and in super low light like that its not going to make a big difference. Mainly it will matter in stuff like intermediate brightness settings like 1/4 moon, etc. With RNVGs, I don't see the value as much. With a manual gain system it has more advantages, but mainly your screen is brighter, is the crux of it.
