I did it y'all. I finally did it. I listened to these two Nash written tracks and they were both so cozy and yet still brought so many emotions to the surface. These guys just know how to write iconic and memorable music... its fantastic to hear this stuff. After the past couple days and the troubles we've faced... I needed this. The present may be dark but the future is gleaming right over the horizon, the sun is about to rise. Thank you CSN and sometimes Y for this fantastic feeling you give me.

The story I have always heard was that Nash found the final take of Teach Your Children lacking in something. Crosby mentioned that the Dead were working in the same studio and that Jerry had been playing pedal steel a lot in the recent weeks and perhaps that might work. Nash didn't know Jerry very well and was a little reluctant. Jerry came over during a break and laid down the first track. Nash thought it was perfect but Jerry wasn't satisfied so he did it again. The second take is the one you hear. Everyone was satisfied.

Our House was written during his Joni Mitchel period. Teach Your Children was rising to #1 on the charts when Neil Young penned Ohio, and Nash insisted that Ohio be pushed onto the air even though it diminished the success of his tune. Kudos to Nash.

Joni Mitchell + Graham Nash lived together in "Our House". These songs were anthems to the youth, myself included, back in early '70s. Don't forget Neil Young trilogy from Deja Vu " Country Girl".

Teach Your Children so beautifully captures what was called “the generation gap”…between people Nash’s age, and their parents, who had lived through WWII, which was particularly close and awful in England. Such war survivors gladly grasped the security of 1950’s middle class life, as a blessing within which to raise their children. The children found that to be dull and repressive, and wanted to live a more colorful life! Both sides could’ve used the empathy this song invokes. : )

You talked about Laurel Canyon. David Crosby put out a solo album called "If Only I Could Remember My Name" that features a jam session at his home in the Big Sur mountains with his friends like Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Jerry Garcia, Jefferson Airplane and many more. It's an underrated masterpiece. It's an album that makes me feel high, without the use of drugs.

Good call on "Our House" -- seeing the obvious Beatles inspiration. I can almost hear Paul singing it, with John and George doing the harmonies. And you're right that Jerry Garcia's steel guitar is essential in "Teach Your Children." Finally, the whole album is such a rarity, absolutely desert island quality.

Our house was my life 20 years ago. How things change. Teach Your Children. What a powerful song. I only yelled at my daughter once, she was sarcastic to my mother. If I told her she couldn’t do anything, I be said “because I said so” I gave her a valid reason. She is the best daughter a mother could have. She was always allowed to make decisions, ask questions and just express herself. She is a beautiful, kind, intelligent, tattooed and successful 40 year old now. Works a fantastic job, and has her own business on the side. I’m so lucky.

I had the fortune to see CSN with a friend backstage at Wimbley arena in London. Also met Graham Nash who was very welcoming, friendly and gracious. C&S not so much. We were sitting on stage on folding chairs off to side- stage right before they started. When our escort told us time to go to regular seating they had for us Graham saw and told the guy to let us stay. So we got to watch concert right on stage. 1983.

Lee, I have mentioned before that I have three grown children they're all young adults now I don't know if this will help you as you travel the path of parenting,, but one of the things I consistently kept in my mind and taught my children as incidents occurred life happened unplanned things would cause the heart to hurt... was one John Lennon quote: "life happens while you're making other plans." it doesn't make everything better of course but sometimes it helps my head to wrap around the randomness of life. 🌈 sending good vibes your way-- I hope you see this comment.

Also Lee, when things settle down for ya, there is a documentary called Laurel Canyon, which is where all of the groups of the day, artists and hippies hung out in the mid 60's to probably 69, Carol King, Jackson Browne, CSN and Y, and a lot of other people lived a crazy, nomadic bohemian lifestyle and they made GREAT music. HI LEE - Big Beatles vibes I hear you say about "Our House"........ Well, Graham Nash, as well as being English, was a contemporary of theirs, and as a member of The Hollies in the 60's was a competitor in the charts with them. So I guess that being in that atmosphere must rub off.... As well as living with Joni Mitchell, and writing Our House about their relationship, and living in the singer / songwriter vibe of Laurel Canyon...... Keep on Rocking young sir....!

DV truly is a "CSN - and Y" album: Neil pretty much did his two songs on his own (with the others providing vocals overdubs), while these songs have zero contribution from him (which made me chuckle, when both were in rotation on the Sirius "NY Channel"). I believe "Woodstock", "Almost..." and "Everybody..." are the only other songs he contributed to.

Graham Nash first imagined Teach Your Children as a more delicate English sounding madrlgal sort of thing. One of the guys, maybe Stills, suggested a more country sound. The young ones of today don't realize the anger and hurt between parents and children during this time. Those wounds can heal with kindness, knowledge and time. Learn from each other.

I'll never forget at the end of every csn concert they used to close out with this song and the whole audience would sing it (encouraged by them)

For close harmony you might want to investigate The Everly Brothers. Different era of music but some of your favourite artists will have grown up with them.

Lee. Whilst we’re on the subject of Neil the Almighty I would recommend that you watch Pearl Jam and Neil from Toronto doing Rocking un the Free World even if you don’t publish it. It’s sheer brilliant magic and then the man saunters on and all hell breaks loose. Utter madness. Neil rocks it out and you can see he’s enjoying every minute with the younger musicians. Please try it.

When you have three different singers, you can do any number of combinations as opposed to only two voices.
