Had a day off on Friday and I decided to head Out to Arecibo. Beautiful part of the Island and came across this huge statue of Christopher Columbus. and I mean huge....
The Birth of the New World (colloquially known as La Estatua de Colón, literally meaning "The Statue of Columbus") is a 360 foot (110 m) bronze sculpture located on the Atlantic coastline of Arecibo, Puerto Rico. When completed in 2016, it became the tallest sculpture in the North America.

Puerto Rico’s natural beauty is gorgeous. A dear friend who was born and lived there until WWII tells me how much she loved growing up there. Speaking purely from the point of view of public art, to say that the “Birth of a New World” statue is an eye sore, is being kind. Are you certain it’s not some sort of Trojan Horse?

Puerto Rico is a beautiful place and it’s diverse seascape, mountains and culture makes it all more interesting. Not sure what you mean when asking if this huge statue is some sort of Trojan horse but I can say it’s a masterpiece of artistic beauty. Eye sore? Well depends if you are speaking politics or simply you don’t like the statue...

Only seeing photographs, I’m sure I am limited in that I cannot see it in perspective, standing on the ground, where, for example, the three sails would appear smaller, since they are farther away. In the aerial photos, the sails are disproportionately huge, and overpower the rest of the piece. Columbus’ head is disproportionately tiny, atop his enormously broad shoulders. I get that it is highly stylized, but, I don’t find it aesthetically pleasing. What is the base supposed to represent? To me, the base looks like a tree trunk, or the stump of a giant tree. Is that what it is? It is hard to tell from the photos I’ve seen.

@@timothysmith7888 Hey, I just saw this and apologize. From what I recall, there were the sailing vessels Santa Maria, Nina and Pinta with waves cresting. I am far from an artist or a connoisseur of art but it looked pretty cool from my vantage point.

How is it that P.R has enough money to build a solid 340 foot statue, but not enough money to fix and maintain the parts of the island 🌴 that were destroyed by the hurricane?

Christopher Diaz The statue was donated by a Russian artist. It was not built by PR government. A private investor bought the statue and built it in Arecibo.

The statue happened in 2016. Maria was in 2017

Yeah it was paid for by private investors but that just shows you that these private investors are more concerned with venerating a mass murdering colonizer than fixing the island.

Last week while in Humacao I drove to Arecibo just to see this statue. Unfortunately, the parking lot was chained off and I couldn't enter. The statue is magnificent. Google "Birth of the New World" and read in Wikipedia all about the effort to find a home for this statue, the cities who rejected the offer and their reasoning.

Hello and thank you for your comment. I can tell you that this is one controversial piece of art. There are so many opinions about Christopher Columbus and quite frankly, I respect all opinion whether I politically agree or not. I just saw this behemoth statue that is a beautiful work of art. Nothing more or less. I did read how it came to be on Wiki and speaking to folks on the ground. Most I spoke with from the area saw it as a much needed tourist attraction for the area and then there are those that look at as an insult to the island because of how Columbus treated the Boricuas. It is what it is....

There is No "Puerto Rico" or its "Real Name Borikén" because its Taino people don't have a Voice. (Google Translate - No existe "Puerto Rico" ni su "Nombre Real de Borikén" porque su pueblo Taíno no tiene Voz.

People keep sharing and sending me these videos of the Columbus statue. It's upsetting to see such an insult to all Indians and the Taino community. I won't ever visit again.

@@joshusdog7677 Interesting, you are entitled to your opinion but are there more that oppose the statue? if so, you can petition but if it not offensive to others well its just an opinion. I personally think is pretty awesome but I suspect its more a political concern for you. Not what I do.

Sure by some standards the statue is pretty but statues of people should not be put up just because they look nice especially if the person being represented was a reprehensible individual who committed more atrocities than altruisms. Is it ethical to commemorate a statue of a man who during his governorship of Hispaniola killed some 2-3 million people even if it is the most beautiful statue ever made? www.change.org/p/andrew-m-cuomo-remove-the-christopher-columbus-statue-in-arecibo-puerto-rico

To me it is a beautiful statute, I live in Puerto Rico. It is a part of who we are, I embrace my Spanish, African and native roots. Statues are a reminder of what happened and of those that have shaped our history to be who we are today. That is my view of it
