L’invention de la Linotype (dont le premier exemplaire entra en service en 1886 dans les ateliers du New York Tribune) représente un tournant majeur dans l’histoire de l’imprimerie. Avec cette machine, le travail de composition, autrefois fait manuellement, est effectué en utilisant un clavier, et les caractères à imprimer sont fondus sur demande. La Linotype a été fabriquée à 150 000 exemplaires entre 1886 et les années 1960.
Nous vous invitons à regarder cette vidéo, qui explique le fonctionnement de cette merveille mécanique. Le film, offert par les Amis du Musée, a été tourné dans notre atelier.

...and to think that this machine was designed with pencil and paper (no computers). Amazing! I miss the printing industry.

La primera vez que vi una linotipia tenía 14 años y me sedujo de tal manera que no tuve duda de que sería mi oficio. Hoy, después de tantos años sigo manteniendo vivos todos los movimientos y sonidos que producen sus numerosas piezas y elementos que la componen. Gran invento.

I started on an Intertype, I was taught to use all fingers, little finger left hand was for the space bar.

Super vidéo. Des souvenirs pour moi qui ai été linotypiste jusque fin des années 1980 dans une imprimerie lensoise. Le linotypiste et le typographe... des métiers d'art pour moi. Je sais pas si on utilise tjrs cette technologie pour les ouvrages d'art ! L'impression typo à l'instar de l'impression offset est une impression direct forme imprimante vers papier. Ainsi nous devions relire nos formes imprimantes a l'envers. Merci pour cette magnifique démo

Monteur/Compositeur, j'ai appris tout d'abord a composer a la main avec un composteur et une casse, puis un petit stage de linotype, histoire de connaitre car on était déjà a la fin des années 80 à la photo-compo. Toujours fasciné par ces machines.

Recordar uma vida. 30 anos trabalhando nós jornais do Brasil. Me aposentei no O Globo (RJ) em 1978.

They are dropped back into their proper slots automatically, thanks to a very intricate cam system. 😊

Pues sí. Lo he visto picar con todos los dedos. Yo, por ejemplo, lo picaba con el meñique. Qué recuerdos, ¿no?
