The LA-Phant Meets the Dyno | MOPAR LA Small Block Dynamometer Session
The LA-phant: Episode 21
The time has come to see if all of Pop's planning and hard work have paid off. Once a mild manner 340 LA small block, this 437 powered by 110 race fuel is put to the test. The LA-phant is a naturally aspirated 437 MOPAR LA small block stroker build with sights set on 700+ HP.
This build is based on the Chrysler/MOPAR 340 small block which were known for their larger cylinder bores (4.04 inches).

That's awesome!! Your hard work paid off nicely!! Those heads are letting the cubic inches you have reach a high RPM for horsepower!! The stroke and wedge engine design in general ensure plenty of torque!! My 416 (340 based, 4" crank) made 525+HP around 6000 but the peak was at 6200 although it would cleanly rev to 7200, the Edelbrock RPM heads were the limiting factor (flow CFM). I used a flat tappet Ultradyne camshaft, 259/263*@.050" with .590" lift, 110LSA, for street use. Was a beast 3000-6000 for sure!! Love the LA-PHANT 437"!!!

LA MoPars are always a pain to get headers that match the ports exactly. We are doing a ported J-head 360 for a '66 Valiant, and the early '60s A-bodies are a pain to find ANY long tubes for. We found some on Ebay with 1-5/8" primaries and 2-1/2" collectors , so I'm sawing the collectors off and putting 3" on, but the head ports are 1/8" bigger, so I had to make tapered adapter plates to ease the flow (funnel) into the smaller header tube. Hopefully worth the effort and won't leak!!

Thanks for the good video series. Dyno pulls with open headers looses power and torque, using a 18-24 " collector at minimum pulls in as much as 50-70 FTLBS of torque. Watch the KZfaqs where they dyno no collector, 4 inch, 8 inch and then add an addition 18 inches... Each time the torque and power climb up across all different people doing dyno pulls on difference engines and dyno machines. Chasing that 700 without a collector the appropriate size is hard work.

Thanks for watching and the feedback. Yeah, I also think those headers were hindering our potential. When we get the motor into Project sLA-ten we'll be able to implement some things hidden in our "back pocket."

Very impressive for the cubic inch & the fact Mopar, like Pontiac is limited on cylinder head. I'd be very happy with that & most pump gas SBC guys would be happy as well.

Great progress, but I can't wait to see 700+! You can build a pump gas 408 that produces those same numbers you guys got, so I know your has more in it! Edit: not discrediting the build, just saying it *definitely* has more in it :)

Been following this build from day one. Six hundred and thirty eight horsepower with 591 pound feet of torque very respectable. I wonder how much oil was in the pan, less could have made a measurable difference with the bigger diameter tube headers. Didn't catch the size you tested with? I'm sure you guys are satisfied and congratulations on a good and informative build!

It's getting there. Try some better 2" headers and advance the cam 2 degrees. If the advance in the distributor isn't locked out, lock it out and set the advance to 34 degrees btdc. Just some places more HP may be hiding.

I definitely think some better headers will help too. We did make some timing adjustments and locked out timing while we we're at Voss. Pop also opened some exhaust ports a little after the session. We'll get it figured out by the time it goes in the new project. Thanks for watching and following the build.

Great question. We looked after break-in. Before the dynamometer sessions. Everything was awesome. Unfortunately, we do not have the engine in a vehicle at this time. Even then, it will not be a street car and will see be run quarter miles at a time.

A majority of the parts for our builds are in the descriptions. I start them in the first video of the series. The LA-phant started as a 340. Those blocks are harder to find. LA 318 and LA 360 blocks are more plentiful. Let us know how it goes.

Just a "Dickweed" comment or two (3). 1. Those headers are worthless. You could have helped them SOME with a 3 inch Diameter 18 inch long collector extension. 2. The oil pan. A better one would be a nice baffeled 10 quart running 6 quarts to lower the windage splash. Then add a scraper and a power slot kickout. Canton or Kevko makes a good pan. 3. Lower the oil pressure a bit. Use a stock, not High Volume, Melling type pump with a Kevko direct oil pump cover and have more oil FLOW at less pressures. Just a Dickweed, always was and always will be. Most times I do know my azz from my elbow.

Makes you wonder why all those mopar engineers were so completely stupid, adding all that iron to make a short stroke long rod big block 440. Maybe it was having to warranty it.
@MicsMotorworx
@MicsMotorworx Ай бұрын
The requirement to run it on race fuel. ;) This thing does not like pump gas. However, you're right. The engineers could have taken away that compression ratio a bit. Then there the gasket material, life time of the motor, etc. The great thing about the LA MOPAR type heads was the air flow. Thanks for watching. 😀
