LA PRIMA CROCIATA: LE ORIGINI

Il papa che promosse la prima Crociata fu Urbano II. Questi era un francese di nobile origine e si chiamava Oddone di Lagery. Era nato a Châtillon-sur-Marne, tra le dolci colline della Champagne, da una famiglia nobile tra il 1035 e il 1042. Proveniva dalla comunità monastica dell’onnipresente Abbazia di Cluny dove nel 1070 aveva pronunciato i voti. Ne era stato anche abate prima di giungere in Italia su richiesta del papa Gregorio VII allora regnante che lo stimava e lo nominò cardinale e vescovo di Ostia nel 1078. Era un incarico prestigioso che gli aprì la strada a divenire Pontefice dopo il breve regno (1086-1087) dell’abate di Montecassino, il rinunciatario e debole di carattere Vittore III.
Nel Sinodo di Piacenza, tenutosi all’inizio dell’anno 1095 furono introdotti gli ambasciatori di Alessio I Comneno che rivolsero degli appelli pressanti agli Occidentali. La preoccupazione principale dell’imperatore bizantino era costituita dalla necessità di reclutare dei soldati e dei cavalieri mercenari per sostenere le guerre contro i Turchi nello sforzo vitale di riconquistare la penisola anatolica persa dopo la sfortunata battaglia di Mantzikert. Nonostante i termini esatti delle richieste formulate dagli ambasciatori bizantini non ci siano stati riferiti tuttavia qualcosa di particolare deve essere accaduto, qualcosa che colpì la fantasia e la sensibilità del Papa. Nel novembre del 1095 Urbano II giunse a Clermont, oggi Clermont-Ferrand in Alvernia. Il 27 novembre 1095, in una seduta pubblica annunciata per tempo e davanti a una grande folla, Urbano pronunciò un celebre discorso sulla necessità di aiutare i cristiani d’Oriente e di rendere più sicuri e praticabili i pellegrinaggi verso Gerusalemme, la più santa delle città. Probabilmente il papa ne aveva accennato qualcosa al vescovo Ademaro di Monteuil di cui era stato ospite in agosto a Le Puy. Il testo dell’esortazione papale non ci è stato tramandato nei particolari ma le parole del pontefice suscitarono un entusiasmo e una commozione straordinari. Fu in quell’occasione che fu pronunciata dall’assemblea la fatidica esclamazione Dio lo vuole (Deus le volt), con cui gli astanti interruppero più volte il discorso di Urbano II. L’entusiasmo trascinò la folla e la grande macchina fu messa in moto. Le sue conseguenze per la storia europea e mediorientale sarebbero state incalcolabili.
THE FIRST CRUSADE: THE ORIGINS

The pope who promoted the first Crusade was Urban II. This was a French of noble origin and was called Odo of Lagery. He was born in Châtillon-sur-Marne, in the rolling hills of Champagne, to a noble family between 1035 and 1042. He came from the monastic community of the omnipresent Abbey of Cluny where in 1070 he had taken his vows. He had also been abbot before arriving in Italy at the request of the then reigning Pope Gregory VII who esteemed him and appointed him cardinal and bishop of Ostia in 1078. It was a prestigious post that opened the way for him to become Pope after the short reign (1086 -1087) of the abbot of Montecassino, the renouncer and weak character Victor III.
At the Synod of Piacenza, held at the beginning of the year 1095, the ambassadors of Alexis I Comnenus were introduced who made pressing appeals to Westerners. The main concern of the Byzantine emperor was the need to recruit soldiers and mercenary knights to support the wars against the Turks in the vital effort to recapture the lost Anatolian peninsula after the unfortunate battle of Mantzikert. Although the exact terms of the requests formulated by the Byzantine ambassadors have not been reported to us, however, something particular must have happened, something that struck the Pope's imagination and sensitivity. In November 1095 Urban II arrived in Clermont, today Clermont-Ferrand in Auvergne . On November 27, 1095, in a public session announced in time and in front of a large crowd, Urban gave a famous speech on the need to help Eastern Christians and to make pilgrimages to Jerusalem, the holiest of cities, safer and more practicable. . Probably the pope had mentioned something to Bishop Ademaro di Monteuil, of whom he had been a guest in August in Le Puy. The text of the papal exhortation was not handed down to us in detail but the words of the pontiff aroused extraordinary enthusiasm and emotion. It was on that occasion that the fateful exclamation God wills it (Deus le volt) was pronounced by the assembly, with which the bystanders interrupted Urban II's speech several times. The enthusiasm dragged the crowd and the big machine was set in motion. Its consequences for European and Middle Eastern history would have been incalculable.
