Years ago I was playing a Jazz Festival in Japan. I was onstage and I noticed Peter Erskine watching from the side of the stage. I had met Peter a couple of times at various shows here in Japan and I approached him afterwards. I asked him if he had any suggestions for me in terms of my playing. He paused for a second and said any reason you bounce your left leg in between the beats like that? I said I really didn’t think about it. He said “ THAN DON’T DO IT.” Internalize your time, bouncing like that makes your groove way too small. You want people to be able to drive a truck through your groove. The best one point advice I have ever received……..changed my feeling of the groove forever in the greatest way. I pass the wisdom on. Great Band!

Roy Obiedo, the guitarist, wrote this tune which I first heard it on Pandora on a Pete Escovedo album & loved the tune. Andy Narell also recorded it in 1983 on his Light in Your Eyes CD which I've had for years I just "discovered". You never know when you're going to re "discover" a great tune. Or a guitarist and/or composer of the caliber of Roy Obiedo. Got to love them going Reggae in there.

This group should perform here in New york where a lot of people can watch the way they play. They play good music good players but only few people are watching.

Yes, hardly anyone was there. I don't know for sure, but if it was a school-funded, student-organized show with free admission, there could have been no financial incentive to publicize it. It's odd when there's no/little audience, but it's always fun playing with these guys.

If the panist was Andy Narell this would be absolutely perfect. By the way it's pretty funny to hear other rhythms than samba in a tune named "La Samba".

@markmarktarmann Yes I know, it just that I'm a great fan of both Narell and Obiedo, so I felt that I had to say that. But the other player is pretty fine too actually. By the way, by the change of rhythm, I was mainly speaking about the "reggae part", it was magnificent and totally unexpected. I love reggae as well, and that bass line in particular was just crazy. In general, I love the idea of the fusion of genre, it's always the beginning of a long journey of discovery and excitement.
