The La Sportiva Legends only is back!
In short, the La Sportiva Legends Only is an invitational bouldering competition for the best of the beasts.
Five or six athletes are invited. Could be because of their accomplishments on the competition scene, on rock or something else. Honestly…it’s rarely “something else”.
The problems are very, very difficult. Often even harder than that.
Typically in the ~8B - 8C range.
This year we’re going old school…
A big difference compared to other competitions is that the athletes get to work on four of the five problems during a session two days before the competition.
Another difference is that, instead of a fixed amount of time, they each have three attempts per problem.
Except for the last problem, there is no isolation, so the athletes can watch and cheer for each other.
The competition will be live-streamed and commentated by our excellent team of Emil Abrahamsson and Sofya Yokoyama.
Even better is of course to watch the competition live at Klättercentret Akalla.

I only found about this comp from Emil's channel, and he left the video on such a cliffhanger on whether anyone topped the crack that I had to come and find out! Loved how well it showed the amount of practise they've had on crack, and kind of turned the situation around in the end. You may need to invite Hannes into the cellar though, his style could use a bit of tuning on the feet first parts 😁

What an incredible performance by Hannes Van Duysen. He 'flashed' (red-pointed on the first go) four of the boulders, including three that were set specifically for other climbers: Jongwon, Nikolai, and Stefano. He matched or beat each other competitor in performance on the boulders specifically set for them, and was of course the only one to send the boulder set for him. And then he just WINGS IT and figure 4's to send the crack climb?! I would say Hannes's performance in this competition is the strongest I've ever seen. He is truly well-rounded world-class boulderer.

@@Ekid33 well I might go off sounding nit-picky here but if Jeonwong matched Hannes in performance he would have been in shared first place. Jeonwong is still a beast though for sure! He had the yellow problem for Ghisolfi dialed, moved so fast with incredible strength and precision!

Would just like to say that 'sending' is more appropriate than 'redpointing'. Redpointing in and of itself already means not first go so flashing and redpointing are mutually exclusive. Just for future reference.

What a fight from Jongwon on that crack! So amped for the wideboys' crack campaign getting some traction and Emil + Sofya are the best. Great comp.

His reaction compared to everyone else's when the secret boulder was revealed was very telling. @WideBoyz, we want to see Jongwon in Crack School! Maybe he could bring Lee Dohyun with him as well. Or maybe the better solution is to send a Wide Boy to Korea so Seo Chaehyun and Kim Jain can get in on it too.

Good to see some old school climbs, and an awesome final reveal. The winning climber was super impressive. The only things missing were a nasty sit start and a roof climb!

This was a really fun comp, not only to watch but it also looked like everyone from the competitors to the announcers was having fun. But why was it only male climbers?

There were only male climbers because Legends alternates between male and female every other year, so next year there will be only female climbers.

Is that true? Why don’t they break the gender barrier? After all, I’ve never been to a climb gym where there are climbing zones for different genders. No outdoor crags only for pals or gals. 😅 Yeah, it’s a comp game, but who gives a toss about the win.

What an amazing comp!! This format is very entertaining to watch. I hate to be nitpicky but the thing that irked me was not giving props to Nalle Hukkataival for the FA of burden!! Other than that I loved everything about it!

quite surprising... makes me think that best outdoor climbers are weaker than sport indoor climbers hard competing in current events... don't get me wrong - I still think that they all are from other planet... masters!

Indoor and outdoor are really different. One can be a beast in comps and a rather mediocre outdoor climber and vice versa) They have different strengths and weaknesses) (Although Jakob Schubert has been an insane all-rounder this year winning the combined (!) world champ and climbing his 9c Project big in the same season, and he's not the only one like this)

Indoors holds have very different texture and you have to grip them very open. It's a lot about getting the neurological adaptations to grip them. Also, you cannot find the microedges or small features that are found on rock. Will probably has climbed so much outside that he isnt used to slopy indoor holds. This is probably most evident when looking at someone like Aidan Roberts who is at 9A level in microedge crimping, but might struggle on 8A slopers.

@@goloheri dont believe that you can be amazing indoors and mediocre outdoors. Most climbers who are amazing indoors can shake outdoor world if they wish so, just take Janja or Tomoa. You cant get amazing indoors while having any real weaknesses (whatever it is: crimps, movement or pure grip and rip). Outdoors - you just need one strength developed

Wasnt there already a comp with pretty much the line up you just wrote? Alex Megos is on the same level as Ghisolfi and Bosi. Chris Sharma is 42 and probably done doing comps at this level. Having an up and comer like Hannes is great in my opinion (and he crushed it), saying Bosi - especially after the year hes had - is not a legend is just weird. Same for Ghisolfi if you consider his outdoor climbing successes. Jongwon Chon is last comps winner and has 10 world cup medals. Only person you could make a point of not being a legend is maybe Nikolai

To be fair, Will is a modern legend and I think Stefano's heading that way as well. Jongwon Chon is a comp legend as well.
