The small town of LaBelle, Florida in Hendry County lured settlers with vast land and rich soil. Since the early 1800s, hunters, trappers, farmers, "Cattle Kings," soldiers and sawmill operators have discovered the picturesque settlement nestled in the oak hammock along the shores of the Caloosahatchee River.
The sunshine state has a rich and colorful history. For hundreds of years the state has attracted dreamers, opportunists, inventors and fortune-seekers. WGCU's Untold Stories aims to preserve the history of Southwest Florida communities.

My grandfather Harvey S. Dyess helped build the courthouse They had set up scaffolding and it collapsed where he was standing, he fell. Broke his back.. after that he never did stand up straight. He told me he was bedridden for a long time.

I got married in Hendry County in 1999... continued to live in Ky until my children were raised... now we bought a home in Alva in 2020.. hoping to fully be there full time by 2021... it’s been over 20 years in the making... but we are getting there! I love Florida ❤️

When large tracts of cheap land was purchased, who held title and who did they purchase the land from and how well did the newly purchased titles hold up over time?

Labelle always give me the creeps. Still looks like a slave plantation town. Slavery supported by Firestone, Sears, and the Edison corporation , if you ask me. Only thing I appreciate, is any town that preserves and supports horse life.
