Today, we are covering the idol group LABOUM.
Debuted in 2014, the group achieved their first #1 place on the charts in 2021, seven years into their careers.

I think it's worth mentioning that Soyeon wrote between us and Yujeong had to convince their company to let them promote this song. Between us is a hidden gem.

Laboum had everything to be a successful group, it's just their old company weren't able to promote them properly. Journey to Atlantis was an instant classic the moment it was released. Though i'm super glad that people had recognized it now, i'm still sad they weren't able to achieve stable success with their recent comeback. However, i think laboum are in a good spot right now with their new company. As long as the comebacks remain consistent, laboum will garner more fans along the way.

Yeah they were the brother group to U-Kiss and the company messed it up big time. Now they have a little brother group called TrendZ I hope their company doesn’t make the same mistakes Laboum’s former company did with U-Kiss and Laboum themselves

I just want to say that as far as I remember their MVs used to be on 1theK but they were deleted (this happens when the company is no longer partnering with them) so their current MV views numbers aren't actually the most realistic reflection of how popular they were.

It's true that their sales were manipulated, their sponsor bought around 70% of that album, that's where the 28,000 sales came from ...but it wasn't considered as sajaegi bc it's not the company itself who bought those albums but an intermediary...but their agency knew and was complicit

I think a large issue with LABOUM's former and current agency is that they are marketed to the SK military. Consolation concerts for the military don't promote idols as artists, but as a fantasy of an ideal 'wife' to give women-depraved soldiers 'strength'. It shows in how their popularity among (ex-)soldiers didn't result in a lot of fans or album sales. LABOUM are also marketed to sports fans (and in military + sports shows too) where the same issues arise. They're just there as eyecandy and dudes cheer for anyone, even when they don't know the group. Brave Girls struggled with the same thing. Both groups actually charted bc of youtuber Viditor making a video compilation of military consolation stages. Male-dominant fandoms notoriously don't tend to buy pop music albums or merch and LABOUM's domestic fanbase is commonly misogynistic and pro-military. It's also wild that LABOUM get promoted to soldiers (and sports fans). Like, leader Soyeon is from Gwangju, members shared stuff that show they support feminism and gay marriage, member Jinyea isn't very feminine.. this does not sound like the people who their intended target audience likes. K-latte have harrassed members often before w creepshot pictures (that they post to n s f w websites), fatshaming, colorist jokes, delusional behaviour, etc. LABOUM really need to be marketed to a better audience. They can probably not completely disregard their current fans or all ties to the military or sports stuff, but this clearly isn't working as marketing tactic and just surrounds the members with a harmful fan environment. Recently Haein was even sent to a show about stocks investments, which is just REALLY too close to crypt0 bro stuff. EDIT: We have a commenting project about this matter! Check trendlaboum or lattereactions on twitter, or onlylaboum on tumblr. Please help us tell the company to not focus promotions on the military (and sports events) anymore. It's really a waste of the members' time and energy and endangering them.

@@ZeeZee958 yes! i recommend searching for 'Gwangju uprising' and reading about it. due to this event, it has a progressive image and political climate. pro-military, anti-feminists for this reason attack or ignore public figures that are from Gwangju and even boycott them. for example the vague "girl group brand reputation" rankings (that are made up by a guy who is like that) rank Gwangju artists lower or leave them out completely. think also of how archer An San from Gwangju was treated.

My baby deserves more than popularity. Give them the glory that they should have got 7 years ago. For 7 years in the kpop industry and still known as a nameless group. 😭 besides, their song can reach the billboard in Korea too. Where are the weaknesses of laboum that make them like this? I purely see a big potential in them to be famous. 🤧

it's because they're from a small company, a usual kpop fans are always focus with those groups from huge companies even they release a songs that sound trashy and too noisy with nonsense lyrics it will still get so much praise.

Solbin from Laboum was even in it. it was a good yet sad drama and it reminded me of Laboum and Red Square’s struggle (a co star of hers used to be in a gg called Red Square who only released 1 song before they rebranded into Irris this year)

All of LABOUM's title tracks are amazing. Their earlier stuff prior to Between Us would've easily got top of the charts had been performed by a more popular group. For those years, the company did make consistent releases and comebacks and that should be applauded for being a small company. Feel like the group was rising slowly but when the scandal of their music chart win occurred, any public interest turned into a negative perception of the group, hence the drop and non-growth in sales.

I actually really like their changing concept, "Between Us", "I'm Yours" and "Fireworks" reminds my favorite songs of Laboum... I really appreciate that their change of concept didn't just from cute-fresh to sexy just like a lot of group around that time, instead they go more mature (not like sexy revealing skin, to much provocative dance, etc) and it makes sense nad moreover the songs made by their member, since they are all adult, be really sad that they still didn't get that moment

Laboum and Journey to Atlantis was my introduction to the wonderful world of KPOP,. And while I have grown to love the music of more than a few other KPOP groups over these last 4 years ( Berry Good, MOMOLAND, Oh My Girl, GG, MAMAMOO, AOA etc etc etc ) . Laboum was and always will be my #1 KPOP group.. Much Love Laboum!!!! By the way, If ordering KPOP CDs online (say Ebay or AMAZON) didn't cost an arm and a leg I would dare say all KPOP groups CD sales would sky rocket

Aalow Aalow is what drew me into the group because I'm a sucker for 80s synth in kpop and the chord progression is one of my favorites; I've been following them since and always wondered why Journey to Atlantis or hell even Shooting Love didn't go viral because they're SO good. Sadly Journey To Atlantis was a nameless hit. And some people only remember ZN being a member of Uni•T sadly . Solbin did such a good job playing Hyunji in the idol the coup last year (which both Laboum and U-Kiss could totally relate to) although I felt sorry for her character (Cotton Candy’s maknae Hyunji) who couldn’t stop getting drunk. The drama was so underrated with the whole lineup being underrated too: EXID’s Hani, WJSN’s Exy Red Square’s/Irris’s Green/I•L, Solbin ofc, and Han So-Eun. With the male lead for the boy group Mars being Kim Minkyu, Jo Joon-Young, Hong Eunki formerly of Rainz, and Younite’s Eunsang. Even on episode 12 (the final episode) Cravity’s Minhee had a cameo as an MC alongside WJSN’s Eunso of the fictional Korean Music Show Music Tank (which I think spoiled him becoming an mc on the show 😉🤫)

LABOUM recently performed as 5 members (including Yujeong) at Soyeon's solo fan meet and they plan to do that again in February (at Yujeong's fan meet i think). it could be that she joined the group again. the members are also still trying to find new agencies. i hope for good news for Laboum in 2023, but this time without bad news following.

The IU controvery really irks me like come on people just because an idol is popular doesn't mean they will always win. If there are others who performed better than your faves then just accept it.

I think the reason why it is so scandalous is because IU is not considered as a mere idol, but rather one of the most profound artist in the nation. I'm not that familiar with IU's songs but she is basically a digital monster whose songs are always welcomed by general public while idol songs are usually supported by their core fanbase only. Public won't be harsh about IU losing if IU lost to fellow popular acts or singers with big names like Lim Young Woong (who is equally loved by Korean general public), BTS, Girls Generation, etc. Since the chart is based on the song performance, winning it with a song which is only liked by a certain group of fans against the much appreciated song from the public is guaranteed to make people accuse Laboum of cheating. Sadly, general public still remembers about this incident because it is constantly brought up whenever there are suspicions about cheating on chart performance

LABOUM will release a new song through the KBS show 'Listen Up', in the episode of September 17! it's a re-make of Lee Hyori's '10 Minutes'. lattes get the impression that Interpark Music Plus did stop existing, or at least LABOUM have no more management, bc the members promote the group on their individual accounts, while there's been no new posts on their group socials, not even for their 8th anniversary. i have hope they can continue as a group and move to a better label or stay self-managed like now. :')

I'm not sure if it was mentioned in the section and I just missed it, but if I remember correctly, the Hwi Hwi album during the first win counting period came with a coupon for chicken and that was part of the reason it was chart manipulation. This was a long time ago so it's hard to remember if this was a joke my Latte friend made or if it was real though 😅 I still have my Miss This Kiss album, signed by the members from Makestar 😭 Yulhee and her husband's relationship is pretty turbulent in some ways by the way, and he has gotten some flack for not being a good father. In general, Yulhee having to leave her group and her husband being flooded with congratulations by his fans shows how horrible the industry can be in a very gendered way. She was promoting Only U while pregnant at 19 with a 25 year old guy, and some leaked posts between them show they had only been dating a handful of months before she got pregnant. He gets to stay in his group and keep making music while she becomes a housewife while still in her teens. It's pretty wild stuff. I miss her in Laboum a lot

Tbh, I only knew about Laboum because of Yulhee’s pregnancy and when she went on that show after having her baby. But I’ve listened to their songs and they’re my type. honestly it’s giving me CLC and Brave girls vibes in the senseThe girls are Gems and have great music.

Actually I really enjoyed Kiss kiss. They used to be the group just outside my attention horizon until I saw a clip of Journey to Atlantis MV. Now they are one of my fav group.

I remember being obsessed with Sugar Sugar after I've seen them perform it one time while I was watching Simply Kpop. Surprised that one didn't go viral because it's such a catchy song and the choreography is really easy to follow, lol. Wish them success and really hit it big with their new company.

Soyeon became part of project group WSG Wannabe! She'll be promoting under a to-be-announced subunit. They're expected to be really popular in Korea bc of the popularity of Hangout With Yoo, which created popular project groups with hit songs each. Hopefully this opportunity creates more recognition and fans for LABOUM ;_;

I believe they had a deal with another company that bought their albums in bulk and then asked to reach an agreement for gifting the albums with sales of another product. As the other company paid for the albums not their own agency and the album sales were counted as bought not bought if people bought the other product this was deemed legitimate and thus counted as their sales.

I love Laboum so much, all their songs are great. It's sad to see how hard they've worked and still not succeed. A group that I like a lot and that I also don't see getting recognition is Saturday. It would be great if you could talk about them.

as a latté, it is true. laboum was not promoted very well. i wouldn't even know laboum if it weren't for solbin. I watched her movie Bling Bling Sounds and I found her very pretty and she kinda looks like my friend, so I searched her name on Google and found out that she's an idol. i checked laboum on KZfaq and fell in love with their songs.

i got into kpop in 2015 and watched a lot of music shows in 2015-2016 so laboum’s songs from that era were really nostalgic to me… especially shooting love that’s my personal fav. but after 2017 i stopped paying attention to them so i’ve never kept up with their music ever again :’-) i think it’s quite sad that laboum has had to experience the darker side of the korean entertainment/idol industry but sometimes it’s inevitable in such a saturated climate

They actually had a great discography and one of the best in kpop! I'm so glad that they lasted until now and I'm not really sure if they are the fave girl group of Yu Jae Seok, but him backing the girls up would be a game changer.
