An LMIA is a document issued by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) that allows employers to hire foreign workers when no Canadian citizen or permanent resident is available for the job.
The Canadian employer initiates the LMIA process by applying for an assessment to demonstrate the need to hire a foreign worker.
If the LMIA is approved, the employer provides the positive LMIA to the prospective employee. The employee uses the positive LMIA as part of the Work Permit application.
