I think he was asking her to choose between him and her brother when he threw the ball. That's why he said he believed in her right after throwing it and then got really, really sad when she didn't choose him. This entire movie probably only happened because the goblin king was lonely.

As a child and a teenager, I wanted to smack Sarah for not taking Jareth's offer. As an adult woman however, the idea of, "Fear me, love me and do as I say,' worries the ever living shit out of me. Odd how growing up changes your mind and grants you perspective.
@BelatedCommiseration9 жыл бұрын
bratgoddess Just thought I would say that, that line, even as a kid, really stayed with me. Then and now I'm an adult its amazing how many adults conduct emotional relationships on this fundamental paradox...just do what I say and I will be your slave...yeah...it's scary shit...and it reflects the adult world that Sarah is trying to escape from...quite amazing really in a kids film...these days you may get social satire in a kids film but they very rarely touch on these adult issues in the same way as they did in the eighties.
@RebelKnightCSA8 жыл бұрын
+bratgoddess As a cisgender heterosexual man, I know my own kind pretty bloody well, and you know what? You're right to be worried. Jareth would have conquered, ruled, and ultimately destroyed Sarah. Although I neither have nor claim authority to speak for feminism, it's my personal non-authoritative opinion that Sarah took a very feminist stance when she said 'no' to Jareth. She could have served patriarchy and gotten rich, but instead said 'you have no power over me' and liberated herself. Isn't that what radical feminism is about - independent women telling the patriarchy 'you have no power over me' and going their own way?
@bratgoddess8 жыл бұрын
Part of it is also, that for a while, people had this thought that possession=love. And I can only imagine that Jareth, a being that isn't human, may have that idea.
@kisslordorochimaru8 жыл бұрын
That's true.When you are a teen,someone older,who is possessive and who takes charge does appear very attractive to a young girl,but when you grow up you see how that could destroy your life,because it wouldn't be your life anymore,it would be theirs because they rule you.
@luckdragongirl7 жыл бұрын
It walked a very fine line and was psychologically, a very challenging scene. David Bowie's delivery was perfect for the line too. Jim Henson was such a talented filmmaker. He was actually getting ready to work with Disney to help develop projects for them including attractions in their theme parks. He died too young. So did David Bowie.

This was my favorite song in the film. My girlfriends and I used to listen to this a lot in high school. It was nostalgic at the time because it reminded us of childhood but it's a pretty solid Bowie tune. now it is nostalgic for two reasons. Childhood and cruising in our cars when we first got our license to drive . We are all huge fans of his. Bowie's career made us feel we had a champion for being little "rebel rebels" and it was totally cool to be different. We were all heartbroken when he transitioned onto another plain. But he is not truly gone. We are his legacy. He lives on through his works and the hearts of his fans. ⚡️BOWIE FOREVER ⚡️

I made the mistake of watching this movie again last night after nearly 4 years. When Bowie passed I was numb, I wasn’t sure if I could feel sad because he knew he was going to leave earth long before he did, so I never properly grieved I guess. But going back to this triggered some buried emotions I didn’t know I had and I just cried. It made me remember how much I admired him, and how I still miss him, even though I’ve kinda denied it. Last year I dreamed he came down like an angel and asked me why I wasn’t happy with my life. All of this just hit me out of nowhere, I don’t know what else to say.

@jynxxiesixx2678 жыл бұрын
I was born in 1998, but grew up with this film as a huge piece of my life, and a huge part of me. Bowie was my first crush, my first idol, my first inspiration. Gareth was not his only persona I'd known, but he was by far my favorite. His death crushed me. I still don't feel right. The world is a dark and unfriendly place without him. I even wrote a poem for him upon hearing the news, and here it is: Dangers untold surround me, Hardships unnumbered attack me Still I fight my way to his castle, Beyond his goblin city. Blazing through this world, He was Stardust I find myself lost without him, He will always live within me. Though my will is as strong as his, My kingdom is not as great He still has power over me, He is my Goblin King. Goblin King, Goblin King, Wherever you may be Lay me down to rest and bring me sleep, Let me know I’m not alone I tremble like a flower, As my world falls down Because my love for him, Has broken my heart in two. He was the man who sold the world, The Thin White Duke He was and will forever be My Goblin King. Goblin King, Goblin King, Wherever you may be Speak to me in my dreams Let me know I’m not alone. Through oubliettes and Space Oddities, To the center of the Labyrinth Dancing his magic dance That Starman lived a dream. I look up there, To a place I finally believe in Way up there in heaven, Where my Goblin King is now an angel Goblin King, Goblin King, Wherever you may be It breaks my heart to know you’re gone But you’ve let me know I’m not alone.

It’s cool when u listen to 0:31 on headphones (or it probably works without them as well but..) You can hear how the melody follows his voice. All the way to end of 0:36! They blend in so well. My personal favorite part is: ”Live without the sunlight. Love without your heartbeat. I.. i. I can’t live within you.” Also Bowie can act the feelings so well. His emotions show much and give more charecter to Jareth. Also, also thanks for reading this. I always write WAY too much :>

I freaking love this movie, especially this scene. The Goblin King has such passion for Sarah, such angered love. He's so frustrated by how she just won't love him. He's the classic dark prince, and he practically BEGS her to stay. The reason I love this movie so much...is because she doesn't. Sarah knows this is unhealthy, she doesn't want to give up her life for this man, so she leaves. Sarah is my freaking hero.
