I love her explanation of how she screams to emphasize something to herself. That's what sets her apart from so many artists, is her understanding of the power behind the music, and directing it in the right place.

In my opinion Lacey is one of the better screamers out there. She nails it. Its rare to have great sounding songs with the perfect scream and emotion. I also think Lzzy Hale and Corey Taylor got it down.

What I noticed about Flyleaf and Lacey's voice is that when you look at other metal bands that have screaming in their music like The Devil Wears Prada and RED you notice that their voices definately sound different, but I noticed after like 5-6 years of screaming Lacey's voice still sounds as it did in their first album. I just thought that was cool.

Thanks for this. I used to hate screaming vocals, but that was cause all I'd heard was artists screaming/growling through the whole song. NOT music. Just noise. Perhaps noise with a message, but not the place I'm in. Then I heard Flyleaf. And only certain lines were screamed. It wasn't just rage. It was desperation. Pain. Sorrow. Those struck home. And I knew that I wanted that in my songs. Those one line, passionate, desperate message that's make the listener sit up and listen. Not noise. Pterodactyl noise is an awesome way to describe it. Made me chuckle. :) Thanks!

I don't know if Lacey will read this, but if she does, I want to say thank-you. Thank-you for explaining the why. I am not young anymore :) and so my first reaction was the same as yours, I didn't understand how screaming that way was appropriate or in anyway musical. My daughter loves your music, and just won an award that granted her a scholarship to the Christian University that she wants to attend so badly, singing All Around Me. I also want to thank-you for your testimony, it was also very instrumental in my daughter's life and her own struggle with depression. People like you, who are brave enough to step forward and tell the truth about your experiences, and to explain to others the why's behind things that we don't all understand in your musical expression, you influence young Christians and even non-Christians in such positive ways, so Thank-you!

yeah, it's like she said an some songs with much more screamings have a much longer message (okay we will put Asking Alexandria and Capture the Crown at least away from the other) ... It's like Mannequins (from The Brother Grimm) or Victimized from Linkin Park, Rebellion, Wasteland and Until it's Gone are some more examples ... Maybe, screams aren't made for everyone, but if the people understand, why so much bands use them, they would probably tolerate them ^^ (hope you understand me ._. :D)

What she says about the power of music is really enlightening and good. It certainly does have a power and influence on people that can be harmful to a degree, at least a contributing factor for sure. What people expose ourselves too does affect the way one thinks and eventually how one acts.

I love her way to give the message. Yeah a lot of metal songs have some great lyrics but their message explains rage, hate, pain and all that and that's it but a Christian singer can sing if they have rage, hate, pain but that 'joy will come' and show Gods love. I met Lacey last year along with other bands and honestly don't know how to explain it but it was eye opening seeing she was the only one with a different message and getting on her knees and praising God and did a little prayer while other bands were flicking people off screaming you know all that. It just gave me a whole other view of her music, I've always loved her music but now I love it more. Just a little story

What message?
@karisgranger6013
@karisgranger6013 2 жыл бұрын
@@suchabadkitty1293 Lacey and Flyleaf come with a message of hope. If you hear Lacey's story, which is out there on KZfaq, and she also wrote a book about, she was in a really dark place and had a terrible tragedy happen in her family when she was 10 years old. After that she fell into depression for the next six years and saw a lot of other dark and messed up things happen in her life. When she was 16 she decided to commit suicide. But the day she planned to do it, she ended up getting into a fight with her grandmother who forced her to go to church. She hated Christianity and only went so her grandma would leave her alone and was still going to commit suicide when it was over. But something miraculous happened in that church building where the pastor suddenly started weeping in the middle of the service. Then he said "there's a suicidal spirit in this room. Please let us pray for you because God has a plan for your life and doesn't want you to die tonight." She didn't go because she was embarrassed and really weirded out. So the pastor just looked awkward. But then when the service was over before she left, a man stopped her at the door and said a bunch of prophetic things he couldn't know. Then he told her Jesus died to take the punishment of our sin on Himself so we don't have to carry it with us anymore, and Jesus offers this gift to anyone who asks Him. He prayed with her and when he prayed she says she had an encounter with God that was so real and she felt His presence show up in front of her. So after that she felt how much God loved her and knew her, and she didn't kill herself. She accepted Jesus into her life. Sorry I wrote like a literal page. I hope that explains where she's coming from and her vision for music. She tells a lot more detail of her story on KZfaq that you can find which I definitely recommend, also in her book "The Reason". But their message is that even in sorrow and darkness, there is hope because of Jesus and there is purpose and we were all made for a purpose. She sings about sorrow and anger and pain, but also about beauty and hope and joy. Hope that answers your question. 😊

I listen to all kinds of music, and as I get older I’m starting to realize the music I listen to is reflecting my current mood, even If I’m unaware of what I’m actually feeling. When I need up lifting or a reminder that life will. Ot always has its boot on your head pushing you into the dirt, I listen to Flyleaf or Skillet, when I’m angry or need to release rage, Pantara or Killswitch and anything that’s heavy. But I also feel that you should be acutely aware of what music can do to your mind state and never let it actually take over your mind set.

56 years old. You scream truth to many various types. Thank you Lacey Sturm. A recent new fan. Found you on 97.5 on Z88.3 app. Building puzzles. Building patience. Your music soothes the evil\anger\pain out of me. So many great musicians in positive rock. This music could change the youth of any nation, to return unto God. Lol. I had to find the lyrics. KZfaq has those.

The Zen of Screaming FTW...!! Train for muscle memory, get the technique in the right way and then just forget about it and go full passion (your own body will do the righ move)... that's a very good and honest advise, by the way

I know that Lacey will most likely never read this. But if you ever do read this, Lacey, thank you so so so unbelievably much. As a female screamer, I have a really hard time being taken seriously, and overall just explaining why I love to sing and scream in my band, which is seen as very much a man's world.. it's so hard to find female screamers to look up to, and to have as that role model, because as much as I admire and am inspired by male vocalists, clean or unclean vocals, there will always be that feeling of isolation, and the weird looks I get when people hear that I scream. Thank you so much for explaining what I couldn't say. Thank you so much for being an inspiration to so many people, and I really hope that one day, I can be an inspiration to someone else, just. Ugh. Thank you so much

I was hooked on Flyleaf (and Lacey) since I'm So Sick and saw them in concert about 3 or 4 times. To see her little self screaming those lyrics live was insane. But between the 1st and 2nd concerts (a year or so between) I had heard she blew her voice out and had to have surgery (many singer have this problem, especially ones who sing like she does). and at the 2nd show she was using a track for the screaming parts. Anyone else remember this or heard this? just wondering if it was true.
@xPaLmaaHx
@xPaLmaaHx 7 жыл бұрын
they've never used a track, Pat Seals the bass player is the one who made the screams in some songs, and she was still learning how to do the easy scream by 2008, 2009 and 2010. She has done so much better now in her recent tour at the point that she has used both screams in different parts. I'm Not Laughing LIVE is an example she uses both screams, sometimes she uses both of them again in I'm So Sick and Chasm aswell

This video is perfect! I had COVID a month ago and my lungs and voice haven't recovered still. I had just started learning to scream before I caught it. I was listening to Flyleaf and chatting about it with a friend, upset I can't focus on screaming and she pointed me to this video. Can't wait to surprise my singing teacher with the quiet screams

I’ve heard a lot of screamo in my time and you can tell who can do it without damaging their voice and Lacey has it down to the point where she doesn’t damage her voice. Corey Taylor used to damage his voice constantly same with the lead singer of Trivium. I’m so glad they finally got it down.

You are spot on with so much. All I can say is there are bands that scream because they dont have the talent to have actual lyrics and there are bands that scream because it fits what they are singing about. Glad I got to see you at Sunshine fest several years ago.

People think distorted guitar sound is okay. Why would anyone bother to criticize to use distorted (overdriven?) voice while singing? Maybe ones need to adjust their ears rather judging...

casselliny Nothing used positively with the Lord our God in it can EVER be considered "dark". He is light wherever we may go, whether that be in music or elsewhere. Do not put down a way to worship the Lord. Worshipping is worshipping. God accepts it all. Not everyone responds to the same type of music. If this is a way to reach out to those who do not know the Lord, leave it be. Don't waste your energy trying to tell other Christians that their method of praising the Lord is wrong. Instead, spend your energy spreading the Word of God to the people who do not know Him yet. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone".

Jesus said himself that our worship must be done in SPIRIT and in TRUTH!... He also tells us what the friut of His spirit will be (love,joy,peace,gentleness,goodness,faith,selfcontroll)... to say that the LORD is pleased with anykind of worship is not true... it must be worship from the spirit and not from the flesh... I repsect your opinnion but i am not wrong for mine.. I dont think this is of the spirit,and am not casting stones just because i say so.Heavy metal music is not from the spirit of God but of the world. Why our chirstians still thinking they can keep trying to "santify" ungoldy/demonic, wordly things and then offer it up to God.. He dosnt need this to save people .. The preaching of the word is what saves people by His holy spirit,period.

casselliny God listening to our worship. He is listening to what we say, how we proclaim his name. Screaming puts passion behind your words, it is not demonic. Sound doesn't make something demonic, content does. For Today is a heavy metal band, and they have some of the most beautiful and God gratifying lyrics i've heard, and they sing it with enormous passion. "Though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death We are not alone We will fear no evil for You are near" Whether i sing or scream those lyrics, God hears those lyrics. The praise is lifted to Him. That is what matters.

I was in such a dark place at a time in my life from triggering pain of abuse and abandonment. As a Christian, I so badly wanted to stop reacting to others in ways I knew were multiplying sin, pain, brokeness, and anger. Listening to the screams in her music and lyrics comforted me in ways only God knew and understood my soul.
