Lacie 6big RAID: bhpho.to/2BZT0ud

Thanks to B&H and Lacie for sending out this 6big Thunderbolt 3 6-Bay RAID Array for me to try out, and I have to say it's certainly my made my workflow a lot more productive in many ways. In order to feel confident about this system, i've been running it full time as my primary external drive for well over a month before posting up this article. External storage is often the last thing video editors thinking about investing in. First it's the camera equipment, and then maybe a good computer with some horsepower behind it. Storage is just an external drive plugged in, and when it fills up just grab another external drive. But as you get more serious, and start working with higher profile clients, managing media should become a priority. Physical drives can (and will) eventually fail, and that's just not good business. Referrals are a big part of freelancing video shooters, so having the right tools is like investing in your reputation.
But while you can setup small redundancy with a RAID0 or RAID1 and a minimum of 2 drives, video editors will want to take advantage of RAID5 which requires a minimum of 3 drives. And with RAID5 the more drives, the better write performance which will benefit you as a video editor in many ways. That leads you to 4-5 (or more) drives in an Array, and so it's obvious why the Lacie 6big 6-Bay RAID Array can be a great option for video editors. (Obviously it's not meant for those who are constantly traveling the world and editing from a Laptop).

Are you still happy with this product? I heave read a review saying the read/write speeds are far lower about 200-300 mbps - this was using with an iMac Pro. So I'm a bit worried. But I actually was looking to purchase it. Thanks.

I'm using this every single day and editing every single day, and dumping so much data on this on a regular basis. Yes, this thing rocks. As far as 200-300mbps?? That's ridiculous. There are so many variables to measuring data. First what year iMac Pro was it? What was the hardware specs? Was it over USB 1.0? 2.0? 3.0? 3.1? Thunderbolt 2? Thunderbolt 3? What type of RAID setup did they use when setting up? Was there any bottlenecks to consider (copying from a card reader, i.e.). The Lacie 6Big has incredible hardware, but if you connect it to a crappy system, or a crappy workflow will cripple it's capabilities. If someone said that 200-300mbps is the true write speed, someone doesn't know what they are doing....

MrCheesyCam, i agree to an extend, however, what year the iMac Pro was? I really hope this was a typo... There is only been one iMac Pro and that's the one been introducing in 2017. So either the person has run this through USB 3.0 or the guy is lying, cause i agree with you that 200-300 is impossible with this thing when having it through TB3. Now, for my question: If one drive fails, is your data still accessible ? Kinda like a Drobo? I have a Drobo 5D but i would like to replace it with this. Great video btw!

Thank you for the video! It's really helping me in committing to buy one of these. Can you please let me know how you connected your older Mac with Thunderbolt 2 to the Big6? What type of connectors did you use? Thanks again

After setting up a raid could you swap all the drives for a separate set of drives and create a new raid and switch between raid sets for different projects or does the old drive set loses its mapping and data is lost/corrupt?

Hopefully it’s better than the 5big I bought a couple years ago. That was the biggest waste of money for me. Only software managed RAID, no NAS options, limited i/o, all for an Uber premium price. Your mileage may vary, but I’m looking more towards things like Synology now.

Ah well this one is hardware RAID, not just software.

Ramon, i understand your frustration but if you were looking into a NAS, Synology or QNAP should come to mind first before buying a RAID. I think that, before "wasting" that much amount of money, you should invest some more time into the product you're buying. I have a Synology NAS and i'm really really happy with it. It's getting full though so i'm looking to upgrade. I also own a Drobo 5D and a Drobo mini. I love the 5D but the mini makes so much noise! That's something i personally didn't think about it when i bought it. But what i do now is just using it to get some stuff on it that i don't really need every day and this gives my everyday drives a bit more space :-)

Do you still end out having to compress your old footage so that the files do not take up to much space on the raid system
@MrCheesyCam

Yes you can find ways to compress different files to take up less space. I generally don’t keep my RAW video files once I have colored and exported the footage to H265.

02:55 it sounds like you're saying you're getting better read/write with the Lacie 6big at 1/8th the cost of a Samsung drive. Is this correct? I took at look at the price on the Lacie 6big and it's significantly more expensive than a Samsung EVO SSD.

With a RAID setup like this, you'll get faster write speeds using non-SSD drives. To have an equal comparison, you'll need to build out comparable storage. Try putting together 40TB SSD external storage with some type of redundancy (even if it's not RAID).

The big question is: will this be seen by OS X in recovery mode, if not it can not be used as a backup disk.
@MrCheesyCam
@MrCheesyCam 6 жыл бұрын
To recover from an OS failure, is different planning than what video shooters are using these RAID arrays for. We shoot tons of client projects, and we cannot lose their videos or photos. I'm not as worried about if my Operating system crashes, because I can always reinstall an Operating system. So this type of RAID system is better at other things than for OS recovery.

MrCheesyCam I have the Big 5 so I know. All the video stuff from this RAID is backed up in the cloud as well. But it is a big draw back that the internal SSD on the Mac with all setup can not easily be back up and rolled back. So I actually want to use it even more advanced then you.

Asmund Maeland, that's why you have "time machine" on macOS. I have that in combination with the time capsule 3TB which is plenty for OS recovery. I use my Mac pro for video and photo editing, graphic (web) design and music production. I think this raid shouldn't be seen as a backup utility but more for production work.
