ride along once again with engineer Geo Sprague as he prepares Lackawanna engine #1637 for a run to Scranton PA. 1637 is a 4-8-4 Pocono (Northern) "Superpower" Q4 Steamer with 74" drivers and 72,000 lbs tractive effort built by ALCO. Video ends as 1637 crosses Nicholson bridge. Converted from 16mm silent film

Can't believe not one 4-8-4 Pocono, or other example of Lackawanna superpower wasn't in any way saved. Same can be said for the NYC Hudsons. This engine would be scrapped within a few years. What a tragedy.

Wonderful! We often overlook the Pocono, but it was one gorgeous machine, and this fellow looks like he was born to run 'em. Priceless stuff!

The Lackawanna Pocono was the top of the line locomotive in that Era! So that's what engineer/rail buff George Sprague looked like! Wow what an excellent piece of DL&W HISTORY!

I've recently developed a fascination for Lackawanna steam power, with my biggest focus being the Poconos. I've started diving into the research about them. I really wish Lackawanna had preserved at least one of them. I read in a book I read recently that all that remains of the Lackawanna Poconos is a headlight off of one of the 1500 series engine. I believe it is currently in the hands of the New Jersey Historical Society.

A lot of argument about the "super power" concept among railfans. 74" drivers on a freight locomotive? By the end of steam, they had the technology (alloy rods, disc drivers, etc.) to build locomotives that could run at track speed without damaging themselves or the track, but with smaller diameter drivers for increased tractive effort. N&W's Y6 class would do 60 mph, and for fast freight and heavy passenger the class A would do 75. They only used the Class J 4-8-4 (100 mph) for express work
