I enlisted in 78 spent 6 years Security Police (security forces now),then cross trained into Pararescue for my final 22 years. I am 60 now and man all I can say is that the Air Force was truly a "Great Way of Life " ( old 70's recruiting slogan). Now I sit back and look at all of you Dinks,and Pickles and hope for the best in your chosen career fields. I salute you,one and all and thank you for your service.

As a kid in the 70's i always wanted to join the Airforce. I remember meeting a recruiter and was given a book about Basic at Lackland AFB. One reason or another i joined the Army and stayed in for 6 years. After getting out i was still young and thought to myself why not go into the Airforce. The for some reason a joined the Army National Guard and that was that. Now i regret not joining. My point is don't have regrets just do what your heart tells you.

I started my lackland experience on April fool's day 1981! That first day I felt like a fool and wondered what the hell I had gotten myself into! It didn't last long, eventually wound up being assigned to the 1st special operations unit at hurlburt field fla and was a weapons mechanic on AC- 130H gunships and HH-53 pave low helps! Couldn't have been more proud to serve in this outfit! Best times of my life! 35 yrs later I still dream I'm there! My only regret is I didn't stay in for a career!

I went through AF basic in 1997. This looks way more relaxed and chill than what I went through. The dorms are so much nicer and cleaner than what we had. Night 1 we all had to shower with our shoes on then pack them in our bags with our personal clothes and affects which were then locked up until after graduation. When we got our stuff back everything stunk from being closed up with wet shoes for 8 weeks. We were screamed at the second we got off the bus till the day we went to tech school. Haha.

They do so much more in Air Force BMT than we did when i went through in '93. Ours was only 6 weeks and we didn't do hand-to-hand combat training, didn't do the gas chamber, we only spent a day or two on the rifle range and certainly didn't have a rifle in our barracks and our PT was much less involved (we never even did pull-ups). They really rushed us through. It looks like the AF has really tried to get more in line with the Army and Marines in trying to develop soldiers as well as Airmen. Kuddos to them.

My last day at Boot Camp was my birthday and a long ride to Keesler AFB for 6 months and then off to Torrejon Air Base, Spain. Had a great AFSC which I was able to use my skill sets and landed a great 25 year career on the outside. One of my best decisions was joining the Air Force. Would do it all over again!

@alextutino1265
@alextutino1265 4 жыл бұрын
@@georgelopez1478 its honestly not that difficult, just do what you're told when you're told to do it and there won't be any problems. You most likely won't get yelled at for no reason. The days are long but the weeks are fast. Older week flights may tell you it gets easier, it doesnt get easier, you just get better at it. 0 week through about 2nd week sucks but you get used to it after that. A lot of the instructors are actually pretty chill when you're in the day room, we could laugh and talk with ours as long as we knew certain limitations, but do not try to joke around outside of the day room. Cough drops are currency pretty much, some may even play poker for them, i did, but absolutely no matter what you do, do not get caught, be very careful or don't be an idiot and dont do it at all. Prepare for PT, don't sit on your ass before you leave. A lot of training is in the classroom and down time in the dorm, you can normally safely socialize in your dorm. Try not to volunteer for a student leader position (element leader or dorm chief) unless you like that kind of responsibility, if you do become one, dont be an asshole, nobody will like or respect you. Everyone will have some kind of job at BMT, try to get water monitor, its super easy and you just fill waters at chow. That's about all i have, though none of that may apply since things are always changing with covid-19 being a thing. Best of luck to you.

My son graduates Basic Training on Dec 10, 2020. It was nice to see a little bit of what he went through. Some things have changed since I did it in 1976, but the basic idea is still there. Just look at the faces as they come off the bus! They're all wondering What the hell have I done? My son didn't have to do the Chamber because of Covid. Sadly, families are unable to attend graduation ceremonies, also because of Covid. Fortunately, they will allow him Exodus, and he'll be coming home from tech school two weeks for Christmas. He is going to be learning Fighter Aircraft Integrated Avionics (for the F15 Eagle) at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX. We share that experience as well, only my field was Accounting and Finance.

@@MayAllYourStarsAlign well that's up to you guys. It normally takes a while to join, as it is a very long process to go through. In my opinion, I would start the process right now because it will probably take close to 6 months from the first time you talk to the recruiter to when he will actually leave. Also, the military is trying to reopen everything right now and they are attempting to get back to normal. As we speak however, bmt is a completely different environment and there was so many things that we didn't do.

@@Not_OSI I went through in 2011 and was in decent shape. You'll work out every morning and be on your feet most of the day. You can be a twig boy, but your MTIs will make sure you can knock out all your requirements by your eighth week... or they'll retain you until you can! Personally, I'd recommend focusing on cardio until you can consistently run 1.5 miles in 12 minutes or less. Also, keep in mind that they're doing this while the cameras are rolling. The Air Force is still the Army's baby brother, but don't think your MTIs won't scream in your face.

Isaak Duarte, the training fits the mission. I was at MCRD in '75. I was there less than an hour before I got a forearm to the chest. How many times were you hit? How many meals did you miss? How many times did your DI throw the "alarm clock" down the squad bay at 0200 to "play games"? If you enlisted after about '77, recruit training is "way chiller" than when I was there. As I said, the training matches the mission.
