Betye Saar (b. 1926, Los Angeles) is one of the most talented artists of her generation. She has only recently garnered the attention her talents deserve, however, no doubt largely because she is a black woman who came of age in the 1960s outside of New York City.
The exhibition "Betye Saar: Call and Response" looks at the relationship between found objects, sketches the artist then makes in small sketchbooks--which Saar has made throughout her career--and finished works.
In this short video LACMA’s Senior Curator of Modern Art and organizing curator of the exhibition, Carol S. Eliel, shares a few highlights from this rare look into a process that has spanned Saar’s entire career.

Timeless, brilliant, heart-piercing, symbolism that speaks to the insidious injustices of systemic racism and the transcendent power of ones spirituality in relation to survival in the midst of continual demoralizing treatment! Thank you, Betye Saar, for your great contribution of thought provoking, humanitarian works. You are truly a God sent messenger!
