Thousands of tourists visit Ladakh each year and a dirty secret has been quietly growing behind the mountains. India's highest landfill and it's filled with trash thrown by all who have ever visited Ladakh..including us!
Sensitive and fragile areas which do not have the infrastructure for disposal and recycling need to address this serious and growing issue. Single use plastic and packaging needs to be banned entirely.
Feral dogs also pose a very real threat to both wildlife and people, with multiple attacks that have been recorded the last few years.

Some thought for the next time you travel, think of the impact you can make. The simplest and easiest things to begin with are to stop using straws and bottled water. Happy travels to explore our still beautiful planet!

exactly the straws. When we drink coconut water, juice, shakes, so many straws are wasted. material used in cheap straw is harmful for the health as well. Recently came across this idea, while using any packed item, we should not cut the sides, these small plastics are hard to trace and recycle. we should rather cut half and leave rest attached.

Huge respect for bringing the truth infront of everyone. Within 4-5 years I saw myself changing this barren area into garbage dumping site. Tourism is the main reason behind it. And the government authorities are also ignoring the issue. People of Ladakh are not much aware about the coming circumstances.

We are doing good in Andaman, not allowing a single plastic wrapper or package after one point. We can follow the same here. But you are right about the lazy management and half hearted willingness of us, the humans, to help and cooperate with the issue of huge garbage generation and alarmingly high rate in increase of stray animals like dogs and cattles. Keep on sharing these issues. I will forward as much as I can.

I believe use and production of biodegradable materials as much as possible and maximising the use of any material till the last, then recycling if possible, is one solution. We, the youth, are so much fond of use and throw concept. We like some dress, we buy it, if cheap we buy more, we get bored, we discard, still not donate or stop. This mindset is dangerous. It really scares me because it is easy to get into the traps. I had many such desires, not very reckless, but thankfully had little cash and by the time I became independent, I realized many things. I thank my father and grandma who have taught me about saving and not wasting a single thing. Proper segregation and recycling of waste is important. There are actually so many issues, and our environment is badly affected by them.

The whole tourism business is but a disaster on all fronts in Ladakh. Except that it brings easy cash to those dealing in tourism business, the ecological impact it had left on ladakh is unimaginable and sadly irreversible. One can't even digest the fact that the underground water table untouched for millions of years ,took only twenty years to finish. The administration is fully responsible that is if one exists for this disaster.
