Abandoned Mine Exploring with Tom and Julie

Abandoned Mine Exploring with Tom and Julie

2 жыл бұрын

While driving through the Nevada mountains we found a huge mine dump, or waste rock pile. After entering the nearby open portal we were in a huge mine with thousands of feet of workings. We came to a hoist room above a winze shaft with ladders going down. Of course we climbed down the ladders to see what is there. After climbing back up we continued exploring the very long drifts and found more winze shafts, beautiful natural timbers and finally the end of the mine.

Hello Julie and Tom. When you said you were is the middle of nowhere in Nevada I know from experience there is a lot of 'nowhere" in Nevada. When I was 16 we had to drive from Aspen CO to Los Angeles, going through Vegas on the way. I can tell you western Utah and Eastern Nevada there is a whole lot of nothing. The definition of "Miles and Miles of Miles and Miles". Just imagine my mom, 6'4 stepdad and me driving in a 74 Datsun truck that distance. No AC too. It was tight that's for sure. Anyway, great video. Take care you two.

Looks like you drove into the "Valley of the Giant Gophers". Gigantic gopher mounds everywhere. Drifts seem like they went on forever and ended with sketchy structure or collapse. That place was stripped of any mine equipment and even the trash was removed. Interesting to see 4 square timber at the end of the drift when the video was almost done. Most of the shoring and timber was pretty much standard throughout the rest of the mine. Glad to see you didn't go crawling around in the collapsed areas. Fun Episode of the Tom & Julie Show! Enjoyed it, Rik

Cool cigarette case. I've never seen a curved one like that, though I've seen photos of antique ones but they were fancy made of silver with ornate flowers and stuff on them. It reminded of the curved cigarette rollers I have seen in the past, though it doesn't have a slot for the cigarette to come out. I have been given a number of cigarette rollers over the years since I have rolled my own now for about 60 years, but I have always hand rolled mine so have never hung onto the rollers I was given. --- Nowhere Nevada reminded me that 30 years ago on my radio show I would claim to be broadcasting from "20 Miles From Nowhere". I was living off grid 20 miles from town then 8 miles down a 4x4 road, at the top of a 1,000 foot cliff at the top of a butte. To make it an even funner place to live, that 1,000 foot cliff was riddled with abandoned gold mines to explore. --- The past 20-some years I've lived down in the valley that I was looking down on from there, 15 second walk from the biggest river in California. With all the modern amenities like grid electricity and running water, but still 15 miles from town. I miss living 20 Miles From Nowhere.

Hello, Tom & Julie. Fantastic video in this wonderfully long cave. Really enjoyed seeing the different types of rail systems. The reptile at the end of the video was a Lizard. We have a similar Lizard here in Texas, but a darker coloring because of the different type of terrain. A Horned Toad and/or Lizard has a flat & wider body, a blunt & stubby head with spiked-points (also, on body), and a short tail. Color-tones are mostly brownish variations; but have seen a reddish tone and also a blackish tone on their body. Looking forward to the next adventure! Keep Safe & Healthy!!

RE: 1:51 on this video, the screened box is likely a homemade bird cage where the miners would keep canaries to monitor the air quality back in the day. Did you find any evidence of birds in the cages you found such as feathers or perches? My Grandpa worked as an engineer for a Denver-based mining equipment manufacturer and used to talk to my Dad about going to local mines back in the day, where canaries were kept as an early warning of methane or other deadly gases. Some of the mines had light bulbs built before the days of planned obsolescence and had been left on 24 hours a day for over twenty years. The demand for minerals such as Copper, Zinc, Lead, Tungsten, and so on kept miners active over the years, with the rare earth elements that are sought after today.I always had a curiosity about the lives of miners, which may explain why I enjoy watching several KZfaq Channels, including yours, that document the exploration of ancient and abandoned mines. Mining then and now is a dangerous occupation for miners in spite of newer safety regulations in today’s mines. Keep up the great work Tom and Julie, and stay safe!
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the detailed comment. That is a possibility about the canary cage. Another likely possibility is that it was an evaporative cooler that the miners would use to keep food fresh loner. The cages would be covered with burlap and wetted, and the evaporation cooled the air. We have seen these in many of the dry desert mines where bad air is pretty rare compared to mines in wetter loations. Either way, it's another fun artifact to ponder over. I really enjoyed your comment and hope to hear from you again. 👌😁 Here is a link to videos of some of our favorite mines. kzfaq.info/sun/PLBirOpgY-NV_n393pa-mL4RNYBMYUs04f&si=ags3c2YkNa5cpa9K

Yeah the screened in box might be a window box like you put on the north side of your cabin and you would line it with burlap sacks and wet it down and it keeps your food cold and they're like like a swamp cooler evaporative cooler does for your house used to use them back when you don't have electricity I used to use them

I think it's for storing food. Fresh eggs would be good too.

Screened box was to keep the canary and your sandwich cool inside the mine 😂

Hi Robert. Yep, the box was a miner's refrigerator, covered with wet burlap.

How did the miners clear those stope areas out ? by hand? buckets ?
@TomandJulieMineExploring

Drilling, blasting jackhammering, then gravity would do part of the work. Slushers would pull out the rest of the loose ore. Thanks, Dave!

Maybe it was a base metals mine. If silver or gold it would be well known.

Is there ever anything in there to take out like gold in the quartz or silver to put it back to use

There is definitely valuable ores 8n some of the mines we visit. It's not easy work to extract much though. We don’t take anything for a few reasons. Thanks for watching, Tim!

Ringtail cats frequently live in mines. Probably plenty of pack rats to eat in big mines.
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, they do, although you rarely see them. Almost every mine we visit has rats and mice living in them, which you do see often. Thanks for commenting, Timothy!

With the price of lumber being what it is, it might be a good idea to mine 2 x 4's.
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring 2 жыл бұрын
The value of the lumber in these dry desert mines is off the charts. Some of the bigger timbers we see you would have a hard time buying at any price. I remember one ore bin we saw had 8"x 14"x 24', yes feet, timbers supporting it. I've never seen anything like it. The wood is generally in excellent condition, too. Thanks for the comment, Richard!

Do you know what I saw a video the other day and the person had yellow for the words instead of white made it a lot easier to see especially when you have a white background a lot I thought of me doing a black background with a white letters but then it might block out too much picture

Hi Mike. I've experimented with all the different colors, and white letters with a black border seems to work the best for me. Thanks for your input!👍👍

Maybe that cage thing was for a bird so they could check the air??
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring 8 ай бұрын
I believe they were used as a type of cooler to keep food in. They would be covered with wet burlap and the evaporation would do the cooling. It would also keep the rats off the food. Thanks, Glenn.👍😁

Hello Tom Hello Julie A great Mine with a nice Geologie First very stable but at the end very instabile. Do you know somtthing about the history . Well i can start working in the Rammelberg Mine again next month I Was suspended from November 21 until now. I am not vaccinatet i can test my condition but they only want vaccinatet and cured guides. A Art of discrimination but now it turns to normal for a while and than they make a law that everybody over 18 years old had to be vaccinatet. But i dont do that. I have another question do you use Tube Tires or tubeless tires on your jeep. Take care have a good weekend stay happy and healthy Greetings from Germany Yours Frank Galetzka

Is Julia always so quiet on camera? lol I've watched probably 30 videos and she's always so quiet....almost seems like she's not having fun! But I'm sure that's not true...love your videos! Keep it up! Oh are you all family or just friends?

Thanks for watching our videos, we really appreciate that. Julie is pretty quiet by nature, but she's usually having fun. Mine exploring is not always stress free which can sometimes wear on her a bit. We are husband and wife and have been together over 30 years.

That's the canary in a coal mine that you're referring to. Apparently it was a thing at some point in history. I'm not sure how common it was in the desert mines that we see. Thanks for the comment, Ed! 👍

a question for you both, if you don't mind me asking. Julie, what is she to you? Your daughter or daughter in-law? Prince Albert, you keep finding him in the can, well, tell him to get out already.

We don't mind your question. The answer is neither. We are husband and wife. We have been together just about 30 years. Yes, she is in the teens of years younger than me. The old Prince Albert in a can joke will never die. Thanks for the comment, Gordon!
