Simon Preston masterfully creates and performs the corporation's anthem for Houston, Energy City in the future. From Rollerball, 1975.

The melody and structure is similar to German national anthem. Check it out if you have a time.

The reason why this movie is still very good after so many years is because (almost) everything you see in the movie is real. Some of the actors got really hurt and they had to be careful that nobody got hit by a motorcycle.

Definitely a very underrated movie. Even by today standards it is a very enjoyable experience (I dare to say that a lot better than many current films): the visuals, the action scenes, the surprisingly deep plot (for a movie of this genre), the dialogues, the acting and the few but very fitting, great and atmospheric pieces of the soundtrack (such as this anthem), everything is excellent. The only thing I feel that could've been a bit more developed was the story's world background, there are a few interesting scenes regarding it, but many questions are left unanswered. Also, I think that the final game was rushed for a final sequence, it should've switched places with the Tokyo one (which was the most intense and epic of all the movie).

Loved the film, saw it the first day it came out back then. I just felt it moved way too slowly, and the overdramatic and unrealistic ending (entire stadium is DEAD QUIET.....nah...) kind of was a let down. Nevertheless, named my youngest son Jonathan over it lol

Dude the movie was a gimmicky shitshow honestly. It was funny and had some interesting aspects similar to modern times. But anyone who looks too deep into this is giving the film way too much credit.

I have the soundtrack on audio cassette. After all these years I still don't know why any of the corporate anthems are not on the soundtrack.

The organ is at Royal Albert Hall in UK. If that were me playing it, I would have drawn every single 32 ft stop on the last two measures.
@michaelbauers88008 жыл бұрын
32ft stops, wow. Not too many of those in world. Of course these days, people's typical playback system is earbuds, laptop speakers, some crap named beatz or PC speakers. None of them are going to do justice to 32ft stops :)

True. I use Sony Prof MDR-7506 phones, and they aren't built just for rattling bass. I like good bass, but the sound needs to be even across the spectrum to be enjoyable.

Watched the clips last week and it reminded me it was a great movie so I managed to get it in cex last week and watched it three times. It's original, Innovative, ground breaking, classy, outstanding story, great actors and the best choice of music. You can't beat the classics

One of the most underated sci-fi/ action films of the 70s. I was thinking the other day how the film Gladiator kind of follows a similar characted arc of the lone warrior, superior to any before him, keeps being fed into impossible odds by the powerful senate ( Corporate ) and yet overcomes. I really wish they hadn't F***ked up the leagcy with that horrible remake they did years ago.

The entire soundtrack is fantastic, as well. Andre Previn truly brought the entirety of his talents to the task of composing the jazzy synthesizer pieces, & arranging/conducting the orchestral music for this incomparable film. The final track (excerpt from Shostakovich's 5th Symphony) is simply masterful. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The original Rollerball movie inspires me to make a scene in my book for DC comics where Kamandi and the Legends are placed in an arena to fight to the death against a team from an Earth not located on the Multiverse map. Strange coincidence the team is lead by the Sportsmaster.

I kinda think that the Empire's Anthem at Sporting Events in Star Wars would sound something this!
@DomoKunFPGA5 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree. Remember in the era this movie was released, this type of juxtaposition of sport and "horror" - which looks fairly tame now that we are desensitized to it, was considered groundbreaking. The use of the organ was supposed to connect the viewer with vintage scary movies, setting the stage for this shockingly brutal sport. And worse (and supposed to be more scary than the game), the absolute control the corporations exerted over every facet of people's lives.

I used to imitate John Hausseman in that Smith-Barney commercial to my best friend when I moved to Long Island, and you should know that I'm the man responsible for the Islanders winning 4 stanley cups in a row. Hey, they never won until I moved there!
Kind of sounds similar to the Holy Roman Empire anthem

Does anyone know the actual title of this neat little ditty wonderful Simon Preston carries out with his usual delightful, stellar aplomb?
@russedav58 жыл бұрын
I've surfed the web a bit and can't find out what it really is despite that Daily Kos and it's agenda stupidly falsely claims it's Bach's BWV 565 Toccata in d minor (that it of course invincibly ignorantly wrongly calls the popular "Toccata and Fugue" error, refuted by the Schmieder BWV catalog), a ludicrous fallacy even a beginning music student knows is in error.
@DomoKunFPGA8 жыл бұрын
+Russ Davis Good question. You seem to have better access to that sort of info than I do. I imagine he was tasked to create these during production, they're probably inside an organ seat somewhere along with a ton of other valuable musings.
@russedav58 жыл бұрын
What was I thinking (not). I was stupidly forgetting Preston's world class stature as one of the greatest organists for whom tossing off a stupid little ditty like this would likely take all of a minute at most. Wonderful.
@DomoKunFPGA8 жыл бұрын
+Russ Davis First it's "neat", now it's "stupid". This is far from "a stupid little ditty". I happen to think Mr. Preston is pretty amazing. His performances of other organ pieces are really great, too.
@russedav58 жыл бұрын
+Joel Owens (온조엘) You failed to read/consider my whole piece: "I was stupidly forgetting Preston's WORLD CLASS stature as one of the GREATEST ORGANISTS for whom tossing off a stupid little ditty like this would likely take all of a minute at most. Wonderful." You absurdly took my piece calling Preston one of the greatest organists as a negative! Of course COMPARED TO his countless inestimably great and huge OTHER musical accomplishments this little 90 second blurb for a sci-fi flick is a "stupid little ditty," though it's still neat and listen to it frequently (after cutting off the announcer and the applause and converting it to an mp3. How can anyone deny the comparison?!
