A detailed video of how to make a ladle/spoon from a forked branch. Most of the video focuses on selection of timber and axe and adze work. Knife work is not discussed in detail.

There are so few things that really impress me, but watching you work speaks to a hidden part of me trying to fing it's way. Much like one of you spoons, hidden in a block of wood, waiting to be liberated by a sharp edge, and your keen eye. Thank you

Thanks for the video. I gotta say you might be the only one here on youtube that actually uses the Swedish Carving Axe in the right way, using your wrists more than your arm!

Thankyou very much for some brilliant instruction. Love making spoons, but haven't attempted a ladel yet. Will be having a go at it now. Molly from Australia.

I like your work mate, and your little adze is a wicked idea that I'll have to borrow :)

Spatula at 3:46? Very good video. Lots of intimate information about the work, including some of the things that can go off plan. Nice gouge adz. Certainly very affordable and available for most folks.

Have you a video showing how you made the adze from a gouge chisel?

Not yet Andrew, but hopefully sometime one will be made.

Sean, is this green or dry wood? Thanks
@SeanHellman10 жыл бұрын
This is green wood. To try this with anything dry will be very hard work with an axe and knife. I usually carve green and then do just the final finish cut when it is dry.

Ok, thanks for your answer. I like to carve green wood myself, but I find it hard to dry it without getting cracks in the wood. How do you do it?
@SeanHellman10 жыл бұрын
Thick wood will split thin wood will not. So a green bowl blank just left will probably split badly, whereas a bowl blank that has been rough turned at least should be fine. Try and always use a half or quarter section of the log. A round log will split as it dries. Keep the wet wood away from heat, the sun and especially the wind.

Ok, maybe I have stored my carvings a little too hot. I will try to dry them somewhere else! Thank you very much Sean!
