The arc of Edith’s romances with it ending with her having love, title, wealth, children, and responsibilities above that of Mary the ever pompous had me finding it so well deserved. Edith, the perpetual middle child, will never be shunted aside again.

I admit, I was a bit worried when Edith signed all of those papers for Michael without even reading it. It made me suspicious of Michael as some sort on conman who tricked Edith into signing her fortune to him with the promise of marriage, even though he was still technically married to another woman. So it was a relief to find out that Michael’s love for Edith was genuine and he was telling the truth when he made her the sole beneficiary of all of his wealth and assets. They really did loved each other and it’s tragic how it ended between them.

Of all the romances shown in Downton, the ones involving Edith are really the best, from this guy's perspective. Edith is mostly very loyal to the men she sees, and that is why they are loyal to her. Michael Gregson is willing to sacrifice for her, and Edith sees that he is. Bertie wants her back in the end, because she wanted him when he was a mere land agent, not a lord. Even Sir Anthony she was loyal to, and in her being jilted, he was kind of being loyal to her, wanting her to have a better life than one with an older cripple. His timing in jilting her was all wrong, but not the reasons for it.

@@davy209 Edith doesn't have any fortune. That's the whole foundation of the story. They are women so they cannot inherit. They can merely be provided with dowry but will lose all of it to her eventual husband as what happened with Cora and what irks Mary and the Dowager in season 1.

"But I'm not your most darling girl, am I." My heart breaks so much for Lady Edith. The way she's constantly passed over, neglected and overlooked by not just her parents, but her family as well is beyond reproach. I understand living in the Victorian/Edwardian lifestyle, but even the Royal family (to a degree) felt some sort of empathy towards their children. (At least they tried on some measure.) For Edith, meeting Michael Gregson was the first time, she was ever seen, heard and valued for her intellect, and beauty, not merely her title. When she read that telegram stating she was pregnant, her whole world came crashing upon her. By now, Michael Gregson was dead and the proof of it wouldn't be discovered by the English authorities to almost 2-4 years later. The Rise of the Nazi Regime. By the time the news reaches Lady Edith, her daughter Marigold is living and growing up away from Edith at Yew Tree Farm. The situation with the Drewes is a ticking bomb 💣 ready to explode at any moment. (And what an explosion that was. 💥) Her parents allow Edith to constantly be bullied by Mary. There sparring matches are Epic. Yet throughout the entire series, Lady Edith's resilience and determination provides her the strength and courage and wisdom to navigate her through the modern world and rise like a Phoenix from the ashes.

Thank you for describing Edith situation in the best way, I wish my English was better, but you said it all. She was , for some reason highly neglected, even by Cora. But as you mentioned through her intellectual mind she found Michael, in the end she became the highest rank of all and god know I was so pleased. ❤❤❤

Such a shame Michael was killed, Edith would have been much happier with him, she never wanted to have a life of paying calls and being (as Lavinia called it) "queen of the county". Edith would have enjoyed life in London meeting all sorts of interesting, thinking people. (I remember a scene where she told Rosamond about meeting Virginia Woolf).

I’ve always thought that Michael Greyson was the anti Sir Richard Carlisle as the only thing these two men have in common is that they’re both wealthy and owners of a huge publishing company. Other than that, they couldn’t be worlds apart. Mary may have had more suitors, but Edith’s suitors, overall, are better in both quality and compatibility.

Same here. I always felt bad that he seemed to have no scruples abandoning a mentally sick wife. At least they (show creators) should've had some dialogue to ease the audience into why it made sense. Another reason to doubt Michael was how quickly he seemed to have fallen for Edith, and so strongly too. At one point I wondered if its because he had been deprived of physical intimacy for so long and he was just so desperate. I wish they had a longer arc and a better ending.

I wanted Michael to ask, "If I had a mental illness in the future, would you decide to divorce me?" In my personal opinion, I don't really like the condition of a man who has not divorced yet and has no problem abandoning his sick wife. from japan〜

I wonder why, besides Matthew and some others, all the male romantic leads are so freaking unnatractive in Downton Abbey. At the end of the series Edith ends up with a balding guy that looks like my divorced uncle. This guy on the video? He looks like my grandpa.

You being a guy -- are you really the best judge of attractiveness? Also, even if your assertion were true, that would just go to prove that most women -- unlike men -- value internal and innate characteristics in their partners over "a pretty face."

I'm a woman and I can't deny looks are a major factor for me when it comes the degree of romantic interest I can develop in a person. If he's handsome but a jerk, then goodbye, but if he's ugly, I would have trouble thinking of him that way even if I like his personality. Maybe that makes me superficial, but there we are. I totally get what this guy says about Bertie, but I didn't think Michael was bad-looking by any stretch. A little past his prime maybe, but not a _grandpa._ Guys can't all be Dan Stevens, but Allen Leech is also a hottie, and most of Mary's other endless list of love interests (minus Sir Richard) were definitely better-than-average. Rose had some handsome love interests, too. Edith was continually told she was unattractive, so it's not surprising if she felt she had to aim low in the looks department. Idk, I also wonder whether British people might have different tastes from Americans when it comes to male beauty. Bertie was kind of an eye-sore by my standards, but so was the guy who played Wickam in the 1995 _Pride and Prejudice_ and that character's looks were _supposed_ to be his great asset.
