*I had been too busy in life to even attempt to figure out what someone named "Lady Gaga" was all about. I grew up in the 1970's with the likes of Blondie's Debbie Harry who worked her way up from downtown NY's gritty city streets to being the most glamorous and amazing singer and performer I had encountered. She truly broke down barriers through years of hard work that went largely unnoticed by radio and eventually made her way to the top through a culture that didn't believe a woman deserved to be powerful. Debbie Harry ultimately become a worldwide phenomenon with Blondie creating number one hits time and time again. But you knew she earned it. Blondie was a powerhouse band that needed no pomp and circumstance, bells or whistles, voice alteration effects, or millions of dollars to become one of the most popular acts in the world of music. Therefore, because so many of the modern offerings on radio consisted of tired, drum-programmed tracks and lackluster nobodies singing the same exact styles with the exact same look with the exact same "overnight" feel, as far as I was concerned, nobody in recent times felt like they were "of" something. They all just seemed to be cookie cutter replicas of each other with zero DNA in the world of so many talented performers that all seemed to vanish to make way for these wanna-be pop tarts who were all created by marketing teams. I had no interest in "current" music as it all felt digitized, sanitized and fleeting. Therefore, I had no feelings about Lady Gaga good or bad; I just knew that she was sort of the next generation of blonde lead singers making their way into the limelight in the wake of Debbie Harry and her admirers like Cyndi Lauper, Madonna and Gwen Stefani, for example. Out of boredom, I took a moment tonight to see what Lady Gaga was all about. I came across this performance; my first ever time paying attention to this person that had so far eluded me. After watching her tonight for the first time, I found myself mesmerized by Lady Gaga's sheer, unabashed, heart-to-microphone, crying-inside lament with a voice who's message came from deep, deep within a truly broken heart for what happened to these victims of the storms. Her brave, outreaching vocals brought tears to my eyes and I was transfixed as I watched her pour herself onto the stage with grace, sweetness and reverence. Her message and spirit combined was an angelic, pure and poignant one. And she moved me from curiosity to fully-attached appreciation for all she stands for. She won my heart in five minutes. I adore her.*
