Interesting that no one thought to rescue Rose when she was being stumbled around the dance floor by that drunkard, but as soon as she started dancing with a Black man, they sent Tom over to "fetch her."

Jack Ross was unfortunately one of the most poorly written and under appreciated characters in the series. The writers had so much potential to explore new themes and rich character development, but instead we got awkward moments of racial discomfort and barely 10 minutes of total screen time for Jack. Im not saying they should've made Jack and Rose a couple, but their friendship should've been used as a plot device in helping Downton evolve. I absolutely love Rose's attitude towards Jack and her relationship with Atticus but Jack's inclusion into the series is one of the shows biggest letdowns...

That was the culprit that Downton Abbey was not going to last very long. It ended the next two seasons. The writers did not believe in the story and plus it lost touch with reality. There were black people in London at that time, they whitewashed the Jazz age. Downton Abbey lost touch with it's realism and they want to live that idealic life. However things were changing and the writers stopped beliving in their own writings.

A black person of colour with curiosity, an open mind and some romance in the bloodstream I should think. Jack did the right thing, to his credit, which deserved (at least) sincere thanks. This shows that he was a Jolly Good Chap, whereas several nearby white dancers might well have ignored the nearby goings-on. Accompanying family memebers adopted "withdraw and avoid escalation " which is by no means racist, just wise tactics intended to avoid any escalation.

Jack Ross’ wasn’t given much opportunity to explore his character but he certainly gave a remarkable performance as the sexiest man of the Series. The following movie’s sexiest man was taken easily by Allen Leech proving Chivalry, Great Manners & Bravery accompanied with Carmen, grace & good looks ALWAYS wins the Ladies’ Hearts! 💕 Good looks opens the door but the rest keeps the ladies’ heart which for me was obvious in the case of Matthew. I didn’t care for Matthew so willing to take the entire credit for the rescue of Sybil at the political rally when we all witnessed it to be a joint effort of both his & Tom’s. I felt the character should’ve stepped forward & explained the positive part Branson played which was far more than that of a chauffeur. Tom was lucky to keep his job while Matthew was crowned the Hero with sandwiches waiting. The only reason Tom wasn’t booted into the night was because of Sybil’s threats & Mary stepping forward to try & protect Branson from unfair blame. I’ve watched it more than a few times as Matthew stretches his wounded hand from the punch he threw as a reminder for all in his presence of the part he played. A little too obvious a gesture for my taste. It wasn’t missed on me as I saw it as quite opportunistic a move.

You can't fight all the time, and there are causes which you can win and causes which you should know from the start are a failure. He knows he can sway Mary, Edith, Robert, Violet, but with Rosemund, who was prejudiced as hell (remember she even advised Mary to postpone an answer to Matthew's marriage proposal, which she stupidly did, because he wasn't noble enough), there was no point in fighting. Also, in this matter, he would have been up against the whole system and the whole society, not just a narrowminded middle-aged woman. So the less fuss, the better. Furthermore, we should not take it for granted that, just because he believed in certain social causes of the time, he believed in absolutely every social cause that is relevant to us today: he would have been exposed to systematic racism just as much as the aristocracy, so there's no certainty that he would have approved of inter-racial flirting without hesitation.

Good point, @klausnothing9479. Many history books portray the Irish as having uncommonly high anti-discriminatory consciousness due to how they were oppressed by the British in Ireland and due to their treatment in America before they were considered "white." Like most mortals, Tom's character became complacent once he had his own foot in the door. The script even had him say that he didn't know what he believed anymore, referring to "the troubles" with British aristocracy in Ireland. Oh well. Characters' consciousness can rarely exceed that of the people who write them.

Rose knew the drunkard, and then knowing someone or at least having been properly introduced to them was a huge matter. He was black, but even worse, he was in a band (very tacky), and of course, he was simply not their kind. Whether people like it or not today, that was hardly considered proper at the time. There would have been been no upper class white family in Britain who would have accepted such an arrangement then and it's just silly, no, just plain stupid, to place today's sensibilities on yesterdays people. Yesterdays mores and expectations are not those of today.
