So funny watching and hearing how this is described as “soft” based on your perspective now, and imaging the folk new to whisky that are so intimidated by it. But it’s all true. We do drink it without thinking about it too much now, especially at the price. It has changed over its 32 years on sale, but haven’t they all? It’s everywhere, for everyone. Still an amazing ambassador for scotch. Enjoyed watching the discussion.

It's not the dram I remember, I had a single bottle that lasted 6 years from the late 80's to the early 90's that i used for reinforcement on special occasion, eg stormy funerals etc, but bought one for £45 in my local shop on the run up to Christmas 2019 and have to say that I really really enjoyed it. Took the water well and it surprised me, with how I perceived it had changed and despite that, getting over my initial disappointment, a nostalgic disappointment, I discovered new depths that'll make me buy it again...

I have a whisk(e)y group full of mostly bourbon drinkers. I have introduced them to a variety of scotches (fully informing them what I am handing them). We started with ex-bourbon and sherry scotches so they could learn what malt tastes like. When I gave them Lag16, 4 of the 5 primarily bourbon drinkers where not fans. None pushed it away, the way they have some other things, but it was too "loud" or too "smokey" for their palates. The one who initially liked it, really likes it and I think two of the others will come back to it soon. It will be fun to be part of that journey.

The scotch that got me hooked. First good scotch I had (previously only experienced over oxidized scotch from my parents which they don't drink). Tried a nip after work at a restaurant/bar I worked at and it was such a nice smoky full long lasting taste that wasn't really harsh. Tried it after getting into scotch more but now it's overwhemingly sweet and soft to me. I think I spoiled myself too much haha Still have an 8y 200th anni lying around to try first.

Just because you and I think it doesn't "need" water, doesn't mean someone else does. The thing is, it should hold it's character! Most competitive judging of whisky they water down below 30% ABV! Have you guys had Highland Park 18? A lot of the notes I was hearing reminded me of things I found in HP18 and I LOVE the HP18 but it was a gift and at $165+ a bottle it's not something I can sip on every day. HP18 is also 43%, the peat is there but "soft," dark chocolate and cherry dominate the palate for me, and the nose is something I could spend all day on. Would you say Laga16 is similar in profile? More peat heavy? I keep hearing people compare Laga16 to Ardbeg 10 or other Ardbegs and I find Ardbeg 10 to be too aggressive so I keep hesitating on Laga16.
@Scotch4Dummies

Absolutely, the HP18 is a WONDERFUL dram...albeit a bit pricey of late. I'd say Lag16 is much more peaty, but it's a very earthy (not quite as heathery) peat.... it's soft than Ardbeg 10. I've been apt to say that if I had to pick one scotch to live with for the rest of my life it'd be Lag16....but even that changes with my moody habits! ;-) Cheers, ~Mark

I just bought this one for $99+$7 tax. I was introduced to Lagavulin from Ray Donovan, season 2 E1, where it's said to be one of Ray's favorite drinks. I don't have much experience with premium scotch because it gets so expensive. The most I've sampled is Johnnie Walker Blue Label and Highland Park 18, never even bought the bottles fully. Most I've bought was Dalmore 15. So I hope this one lives up to its expectations. I'll likely listen to it while listening to Jhené Aiko or some similar artist

In re-reviews, it would be great to hear you incorporate some of your experiences as you drink down a bottle. For example, while I really enjoy Laga 16, very occasionally I'll uncork to pour and find the iodine notes too intense. It's nothing a wee rest doesn't fix, but sometime you just move on to another malt.

I was not disappointed, it’s what I expected it eclipses the Ardbeg 10 which I had tried a few months ago and another Isla that I really enjoyed Cao Ila 12. It levels with my favourite which is the Talisker 10. Tell me what it takes to be a 4 ?

Well well well!!! As the vast majority of those Islay's are peated, the great thing is each distillery has it's own unique peat character. I honestly recommend you start exploring them one by one. You don't need to dive into the pricey part of their ranges, but just try a core range bottle (or sample) from each. The larger ones will be easier (Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Caol Ila, etc). You'll enjoy all of them and you will see their uniqueness, but you will like some better than others! I find the Lagavulin to be the most "earthy" of them, but that's just me! Lowering the score on a 43%ABV whisky because of the water ?....IMHO whiskys below 46% should be rated as how they taste neat.If you add water and they improve, great ! but it shouldn’t affect the score.

I hate the price range this goes for. So many people sing it's praises but you never know what they paid for it... a lot of times I see people talking about getting it for around $50, about half what I'd have to pay. Hoping I can find it at a better price next time I'm out of state.

The thing is: IMHO this bottle is well worth the MSRP, which is slightly under $60. I don't know what people are talking about that the quality went down. I don't even understand how that can be possible. It's just a barrel laying around for 16 years, there's basically no easy way to fck it up. Anyway. The rest you're paying is import taxes and other stuff. And no one want's to just throw away money for no apparent reason. For $80 and higher there are plenty of much better options to be honest. I got Octomore 10.1 for $125, which is considered the worst among Octomores, yet I was just blown away by how good it is. Well worth. I frequently visit Japan, and Japanese whisky there is like 2-3 times cheaper than in my local stores. So I usually look up the cheapest price for the bottle around the world and try not to pay more than 15% of MSRP. And pay premium only if I really want that one bottle, otherwise I just skip it, or keep it on a list if I ever come across it for a decent price. There's plenty of fish in the sea.

I just wonder, why do you let the ”don’t work well with water” take down the rating? I see water as a way of bringing out the best of a whisky, of it already is at its best, why add water, and why (again) let it affect the score?

WHAT YEAR WAS YOUR BOTTLE PURCHASED? Is the question on everyone's mind. My 2018 bottle was absolutel garbage. My 2014 bottle was just ok, not worth the $60 I can pay locally which I never will again. Love Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Kilchoman, Talisker, Bunnahabhain... you get the idea, I'm not afraid of Peat. Glad you guys are getting the good bottles, but there a reason you can get this 16yr for $42 in some places... Enjoyed the re-review guys, keep em coming! Cheers!

Excellent dram. I enjoy your channel, but maybe it should be called *Scotch and water 4 Dummies* You repeatedly have great things to say about a *Scotch Whisky*, only to ding it when you add water. Unless the scotch is sold with a bottle of water, and instructions, water is just something to experiment with. It has nothing to do with what the distiller bottled.

A bottle costs 52 euro's here, maybe even cheaper at places. Ask yourself this, a BIG name in the whisky industry, which Lagavulin is, 16 years old, only 52 euro's, is there a reason for that?...….And I think there is....I had it, several times, was Always disapointed about it, my experience was that it was really flat and delivered very little. For me not even worth the 52 euro's, would prefer the Ardbeg 10 (which is 38 euro's here) or a Port Charlotte (cask-strength already for around 50 euro's here) anytime instead of the Lagavulin 16. Thumb is skyhigh from the Netherlands.

Best response yet, and I couldn't agree more with all your sentiments. Bought a bottle in 2018 for a side by side vs Ardbeg Uiegedal (both bottles same price @ $65). No contest, the Uigeadal far superior. Then bought Ardbeg 10, Laphroaig 10, Talisker 10, Kilchoman Machier Bay and Bunnahabhain 12... all cheaper and all better than the Lagavulin 16. So maybe I got a bad bottle??? My cousin gave me a bottle he bought in 2014... and while it was better than the 2018 it still wasn't great and not worth the $65 (they have it for $60 at my local Costco right now and it sits there). Can't imagine people paying $100 for Lagavulin 16... but maybe they're just trendy Ron Swanson/Nick Offerman fans...

@@100puremustard5 Ardbeg 10 is a stable quality whisky, very little difference with a bottle from 10 years ago, the Bunnahabhain 12 is great value for money, although it is not peated (love Bunna's), but have the idea that the Talisker 10 is going downhill little by little too :-))

While I agree with your sentiments... I'm going to say the Lagavulin 16 is the second most overrated in history. The most overrated being the Johnny Walker Blue. Had a bottle... definitely not worth the $150... not worth half that. Now if I was paying $100 for Lagavulin 16 than it would be the most overrated... but I can get it for $60 locally... and I still pass on it.
