Meet the family behind Lagman House, the only restaurant in America serving Dungan cuisine.
During the times of the Silk Road, some Hui Chinese women married Arab Muslim silk traders. The offspring of this pairing created the Dungan people. After facing societal oppression in China, the Dungans immigrated to central Asia, settling in places like Kazakhstan and Krygyzstan.
One of these Dungan families is the Azimovs, who immigrated from Kazakhstan to Brooklyn in search of a better life.
Once the Azimovs moved to Brooklyn, they decided to share their culture's unique cuisine with the world by opening Lagman House. The family works together serving recipes that have been passed down for generations to their new community in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn.
Their food resembles Chinese food with noteworthy Russian and Kazakhstani influence. The specialty at Lagman House is the hand-pulled noodles (lagman), which are cooked and served with ingredients like beef, onions, garlic, and bell peppers. Other popular dishes are the chives stir fry, the Dungan-style samsa, the eggplant gravy and the Dungan noodle soup.

Thank you for making this video. I never heard of Dungan people, their culture, or their food before. This video was informative and I look forward to trying their restaurant once it is safe for my whole family to travel again. These people are the epitome of the American dream to me and I'm glad they decided to spread their culture. Muslim Chinese people who live in countries like Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and other independent states of the former Soviet Union makes the Dungan people the perfect target for narrow minded Americans here. Glad they decided on moving to New York and I wish them success in their future endeavors.

Dungan is essentially Hui Chinese (one of the two major Muslim group in China) living in central Asian and you can even find at 0:54 on its signboard where the Chinese letter actually means "Hui People Food". There are actually many Hui and Xinjiang restaurants in NY such as Dun Huang - East Village or Lanzhou Ramen

Some people associate Russian to Mongolian.. and if you listen, it is half Mongolian, or some classify it as "Manchu".. when you read online, in online materials... the "truth" is always based on the learner.. to repeat what is understood... If you put all of those "languages" together, it is the same. Basically it is Mongolian, with a little bit of something else mixed into it. "The five nations are Han, Manchu, Mongolian, Hui, and Tibetan form the Chinese nation. " - Taiwan proposed this model, but people rejected it !!! It’s complicated. It appears to be a mix of Muslim, Russian, and Northern Chinese. There are so many different Chinese cuisines and ethnic groups. Hard to lump them together. For an example, I’m of Taishanese (southern China) descent and we mostly eat rice dishes, with less spices. And our noodles are mostly rice based. Northern China seems to have more wheat noodle dishes.

Rick R not just find it. It’s nearly one on every street in mainland China the beef noodle soup is the most popular hang over food after you eat a bowl of that your headache goes down. I would probably say it’s as popular as beef pho in America

@@Ladeliciadelinda Lagman has nothing to do with Russian cuisine. It's a typical Central Asian dish all Central Asians love and know, but Russians in Russia don't know it and don't know how to cook it

Din’t know about Dungan cuisine before, loved the fact that a family is staying together despite all the hardships and filling in for each other, and it is wholesome to see such passion to keep their food and culture alive, and pass it on too :) Looking forward to savour Lagman at the next best opportunity!

Because no such thing exists ? Cos she is trying to "sell it".. It is Northern Chinese cuisine and noodles. With some pickled vegetables. Northern Chinese citizens tend to eat noodles. Southern, tend to eat rice. And Northern "Chinese" were really Mongolian, and Tibetan I think. Mongolian was an actual real dynasty. Southern Chinese were really more farmers, and rural land villagers... Two groups of people created "China"... I think the dynastic model, came from the West China.... ( I would say, maybe Greek or something..)

 @min min : If you look up Xia... the location of the "North" is nowhere near modern day "mongolian" boundary. Please check your facts. Just using the word "North", can allow you to erode an entire nation or an entire civilisation ? How rich and appropiate !!! This is what starts wars in the first place !!! And some people stand back... and help when there is a favour back to them. US is also indirectly helping the CCPs... to get rid of their enemies.. It is rich to see how different people perceive things... Cos right now, most chinese media will show that, the CCP is acting like a "defender" of the country, when in reality, the previous wars were also instigated from inside the country !
@MeiinUK
@MeiinUK 3 жыл бұрын
@min min : Many of these people are not Northern Chinese, do you realise this ? They were intermingle with Mongolia... and the likes of Gengkis Khan... actually allowed a lot of the North to be captured. This is why, even in the West, there are also muslims as well. Muslim is not part of the Chinese heritage, is it ??? This is why North.. near North Korea, broke off... and formed Korea, and then the civil war split South and North together. Same with Japan... This is why Japan.. I forgot which region, split off, and then they just decided to protect their own family tree or dynasty.. and it went on from there. The fact, that, you can no longer call a lot of people "Northern Chinese", cos they are already mixed race... is what is causing a lot of heartaches, across the entire country. Do you , and would you mix, with the descendents of those who killed off your family tree, before, in previous generation ? Who would do that ???? Nobody. No foreign countries would do that either. I will recheck my history of the North... but no way, is the current situation bearable, OR acceptable !! This is NOT acceptable ! If the current set of governments in power, is going to jepodize the country again... This time... Southern chinese will also not be so forgiving, and the country is definitely going to draw a line, and be split finally. Cos it seems to me that, the North cannot control their interactions with Russia, and cannot even deal with Tibet either... and boundary creep... again and again... and inter-mix the people, for the sake of capitalism. Enough is enough. The enemies are already within the country.. and it is a matter of time, that the last remnants.. of any "chinese" is dead in this country.

As a product of 1st generation immigrants, my parents too ran a small business deli and it takes me back when I would be a cashier during breaks when I was in middle school and high school. This hits home. I hope nothing but blessings for the Lagman House family!
