Lagoons Among Dunes: Brazil’s Disappearing Desert Oases

But for six months of the year, crystal blue lagoons turn the arid region into a cool summer hot spot. Located in the Brazilian state of Maranhão, the national park is inundated with rainstorms from January to June of every year. The rainwater that collects between the sand dunes paints a stunning landscape covered in thousands of crystal clear lagoons.

I've been there. I live in California. This is an amazing Brazilian place not really well known by Americans. The water is very warm and clean. You can only enjoy the lagoons a few months of the year. The best time to go is August, September and October which is considered low season in Brazil so is very cheap and the dollar is very strong against Brazilian reais.

People hardly know about Brazil. Our dry season runs from May to September and that's when our rainforest has many forest wild fires. Everything stops in October when the rains restart and the forest renews some parts.

Just a correction: Around 35% of the lagoons are PERMANENT. 65% are temporary and lasts around 5 to 7 months.

Let's pronounce it correctly "Maranhenses": Maran - "Mat'an", with /a/ as said in "car" and t' as said in "get away". Now say glasses' lenses -L = /enses/ and joint: Mat'an' enses. Don mix the sound of n with e, so you can speak the "nh" sound.

Jack Rings I think you misread or misunderstood the title ! The oases only appear in rainy seasons, they 'disappear' in dry season !

wrong, the lencois of Maranhenses and the lagoons are year-round, the shallowest lagoons disappear, but half of them have water. I am a resident and have stayed in the Lençóis.
