mindyourmind.ca caught up with singer Joey Cape of punk band, Lagwagon, and talked about the loss of the bands late drummer and friend, Derrick Plourde. Derrick, diagnosed with bipolar disorder and battling a drug addiction, tragically committed suicide on March 30, 2005. His friend Joey tells us a bit about who he was and about some of his struggles, as he knew them. With 8 albums to date, Lagwagons latest, entitled Resolve, is all about the life of Derrick, with every single song being about or for him. Written almost entirely by Joey in 2-3 weeks, the album was therapy, he notes, and provided him with an outlet for his grief.

When reality is based on mostly bullshit most people bullshit themselves to cope. Intelligent people are intelligent because they can see the influences that shape people, both good AND bad. It's not that we're focused on the bad do much as we realize we lie to ourselves to be happy.

A really good friend of mine killed himself in 1997. He was also an amazing drummer. He never even had a drum kit. He would borrow mine and we would play and he would just sit down and play stuff perfectly without having practiced or anything for weeks-months at a time. It was not a shock either when we got the call. He was a really extreme person. Like 0 mph or 100mph all the time. One time he called us and told us to meet him in the parking lot of a public beach with all of our amps and stuff at 10PM. He had rented a generator and set it up inside a portapotty to muffle the noise. We ended up playing until 5 AM. He would always do crazy stuff like that. No middle ground, all or nothing type person. Didn't have a real drug problem, just weed. Extreme people do extreme things.

@@RG-ls2db He was a pretty wild dude with a lot of psychological problems. It's easy to see that now when I look back after all these years. When you're 19 sometimes it's hard to kind of step back and see the big picture. I just wish I would have done more to help him out. It's weird for me to try to think of where he would be today if he was still alive.

Thanks for sharing. Hopefully this will raise awareness of dual diagnosis therapy for those struggling with addiction and bipolar disorder.

"The recognition that there are demons in your past that you have to deal with" "in the day to day life: trying to see the beauty, it's definitely possible" That's about as wise as you can be about mental health management. We should all have these written in bold letters on our bedroom wall!

I had a chance to see these guys guys play live while he was still around. Awesome kick arse musician and will be sadly missed. I`ve never seen anyone play so fast but look so relaxed..... Bad Bad interviewer, i agree he does well not to slap her or tell her to shut the hell up while i get two words in a row out.

I thumbed up only for Joey's part of this interview. I felt that the interviewer had no real interest in what he was saying, but was in a hurry to get her own opinions across.

@@Guizmopeg Well this is weird.. I have forgotten about this video, and in fact I really can't recall watching it at all. That being said, I watched it just now, and couldn't see anything wrong with what the interviewer was doing. Honestly, I'm puzzled.. It's like I have commented on a different video altogether.

@SonicFanChannel Haha. nice try. How bout not!!! The Clash is the best punk band ever. Lagwagon is great but please. They're more of a punk/metal cross over 20 years after the best punk bands graced the face of the earth. But, hey I respect you and your obvious love for Lagwagon. I remember back in the 90's I saw them at the Soma in San Diego and Joey and the boys let me and my friends on stage to sing backups on Going South. Epic night and I'll never forget how cool they were and let us hang.
