"Laibach and North Korea's first Western concert" Not true. In 1989 a Finnish rock band called Sielun Veljet played in NK's capital. I suppose background research is too difficult for BBC

They have awful lot to chew on and their future (and their families) depend on it. And they are watching trolls that play on authoritarianism so ... what would your reaction be in their place. I say it is very cruel and unusual joke/punishment. Or some serious metatrolling from their Great Leader.

Haha... of all the bands in the world this one is the only one that was allowed in there... priceless. And it fits perfectly. Now, this either happened because Kim Jong Un has a sense of humour and is able to laugh at himself (doubt it). Or it happened because North Koreans are all so isolated and uptight, that even the concept of sarcasm is foreign to them.

+Emmanuel Goldstein They don't understand the concept of irony in North Korea, that's for sure. This wasn't just a simple concert, this was an art project with the whole of North Korea as the stage.

+Emmanuel Goldstein - it's a bit more like if you've been saying that the outside world is decadent, confused, aimless, and dangerously anarchic, then you'd better pick a particularly extreme example to prove your point with - you don't want people saying "that wasn't as bad as I expected". I take it Laibach realized that's what's up, too - they seemed to be performing a particularly restrained show by Laibach standards. Even so, the audience was clearly baffled and confused by the whole thing, and being as polite as they possibly could about it, bless them. The audience does seem like a lot of very nice folks - I do hope the North Koreans eventually get a chance to realize what the context to Laibach's act is, so they can catch the punchlines to the whole thing.

Every glimpse I catch of North Koreans makes me feel sad for them. Prisoners of a violent, cruel authoritarian regime which stomps on their personhood continually reminding them that no one matters but the Dear Leader. Laibach’s coup of performing in Pyongyang is, like so much of their work, endlessly ambiguous.

North Korea uses many US Disney characters so them hearing Sound of Music isn't a big deal. Kim Jong-Uns favorite celebrity is Dennis Rodman, so their leadership has had US (Western) talent perform. And Neil Armstrong Moon landing quote, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for Mankind."

But they couldn’t play Climb Every Mountain because as the Slovenian postMarxist philosopher Slavoi Žižek says in Pervert’s Guide To The Cinema that it expresses a capitalistic sentiment. Tito’s censors banned Sound Of Music for that reason.

Its kind of annoying. North Korea seems to be opening up slowly to the rest of the world and that's probably for the best. Less people will be hurt this way than a liberating war, so slow change is better. But I selfishly and cruelly was hoping for a sudden liberation and to be able to watch North Koreans reactions to the rest of the world.

Them having a concert in Pyongyang is in line with the ideology of DPRK's ruling body, according to which the westerners are utter morons. I wouldn't say the audience seems impressed. Ivan Novak is either delusional or excessively narcissistic to say that, by performing in North Korea, him and his band have made a huge step for humanity.
