I recently had a conversation with a few people in the industry and I realised that no matter how great your "Connections" are, unless you don't have a great brand and an audience, they won't book you. So I guess, my focus in now on building my brand and audience. Also I noticed that in most of the cases, it is the manager or the booking agent approaching the artist rather than the other way around. Would love your thoughts on this Luke.

Absolutely. Another big reason this is key, is because you have much more bargaining power this way. You are much more likely to be in a better financial situation if the booking agents/managers approach you. The ball is in your court. Best of luck to you in your journey ❤️

Let me tell you a story. I herd this supper club was hiring djs. When I got there they said they are not looking anymore. I asked for the manager and they said he was busy and I waited hours. This happen every day for 2 weeks until the manager finally came out. He said he wasn't looking for a dj. I made my pitch which was great mixing and programming and the manager said every dj saids they are good. I pleaded and pleaded and said I do it for free first night, you got nothing to lose. I finally convinced the manager to let me get an hour. After that first hour, I got him and some women grooving out and he said I was the best dj he ever herd and has to hire me. I had a residency there at Coco Jador NYC in 2019 for good pay. I got to play 80s, top 40s, and house music 2 nights a week. It was great and I had zero brand and no followers to offer. I did this process a few times and got through the door every time. Skills with no brand and no following can also get you bookings. See what venues I played at on my Instagram djtransaction. I did everything from 80s, top 40s, trap, house, trance, Latin.

after watching your videos for the past 4 years im really thankful for your advice and essentially "dj training" you gave me and many others growing up in this new era of dance music. I'm about to play the hollywood palladium this friday (as of writing this) and forbidden kingdom soon, and I wouldn't have had the courage nor strength to get this far without you. Thank you Laidback Luke

Unfortunately there are too many Booking Agents out there who are just nobody and events will not reply or call them back. Since they have no cred in the industry. So it pays to get top tier booking agents. Yes they will take a large cut, but its the only way to get moving.

Luke thank you for this insight. One of my greatest struggles has been who does what and where to get exclusive vocals. Your dropping of the names of the agencies is a big help. I am wondering though. When you started working with one of those companies were they your first choice. Certainly, the more established the company the more doors can open to shows due to the network. Though for someone really starting that progressive claim, does a new talent get lost in the shuffle with a bigger company?

This is similar to the interior design industry. The architect won't go looking for artists . . . They deal directly with the interior design companies. They in turn search out the artists.

What happens if you sign with a label? Is there any interplay there? Do they then begin to help promote? It doesn't sound like it but it sounds like that make a strong case for a booking agent to take a person on.

Labels and booking agents are two different entities but big labels do help you with getting a booking agent.

Dudes clout didn't spawn because of having a booking agent. Dudes clout was the reason he was signed to a booking agent. The central matter is having to increase your social clout, listener count, viewership, followers, likes, and other narcissistic newly added A&R requirements to even begin considering getting signed with an agency. The fact people are even having to ask why bookings are dwindling. The fact people even have to rely on clout measures turns a lot of real cats away who have been in longer than these 3 month spawns who will never see the inside of a booth.

Its really easy to get signed with an already built instagram following, something you never had to worry about back then. Ask yourselves why. PLEASE. None of this narcissism was relevant. Not even the booth was paid attention to being a dj. Nobody was facing the dj. The dj was off to a corner somewhere or elevated above the floor. It wasn't until face and and clout became more important than the music and enjoying whats around you. Its horrible what its turned into and the bar that has repeatedly been raised because of the saturation in the industry, which nobody wants to mention. If you're first posts on IG are modeling, your Twitch account swells in a matter of months. .... that being said, im a 23 year vet in this. So Ive seen all of this happening.
