This is one of the better GMRS videos that are not trying to push Midland products. Breath of fresh air!

His information is incorrect, the antenna part number he is giving is a ground plane antenna that requires a metal ground plane, Laird b4505cn is the no ground plane antenna

Midland and others make a 3db gain ghost antennas that are only a few inches tall. They are truly invisible to any sort of HOA or apartment restriction.

Great video. I've been watching gmrs videos for weeks. This is probably the best one about antennas. Thank you!

What about an 9:1 UNUN driving a piece of copper pipe the height of the house and the ground going to a ground spike driven into the soil, would that work.

What bands is the Ailunce HD1 FCC Type Certified on? When I look up what appears to be the FCC ID, nothing shows up.

I bought a browning. Measured the diameter of the antenna rod, .2.5 mm. Ordered 2.5mm stainless rods from Amazon. Now if I make a cutting mistake, I have ten more rods to go. I can also make a seperate cut for uhf ham frequencies. . Have a Nagoya ut-72 that comes more tuned for GMRS. I cut and tuned a rod, again 2.5 mm for UHF ham frequencies. Now have 2 dual use antennas. I hold a license for both.

Personal favorite is the Laird TRAB4500NP antenna. Use them a lot for control stations, often a simple L bracket for the mount. Unity gain without a ground plane, 3 dBi with antennas. Not for working DX but for interfacing with local repeaters works great.

Hi Mike, Nice video. I recently picked up the 4503 (5/8 wave version) and 4505 (5/8 over 5/8 what you have in the video) and have a Laird magmount also. Locally I have tried many repeaters using both of them on the car and found the 4505 to be a little better but I also have a Laird 1/4 wave which is what I have been using and seemed to do equal or better in some cases than the 4503 but the 1/4 vs the 4505, I found the 4505 to be 6 db or 1 s unit stronger on one repeater and about the same on others. So it really depends on the application. Of course I am up here in Williamsport, PA where high mountains are typical, it just depends. 5/8 over course typically work better in the flat lands and 1/4 better for mountain areas with the high angle of radiation.
