I love how he just loves his daughter and adores the idea of spending time with her. Makes you think of the life that she couldve had if things didnt turn out this way.

I think that the reason that Loumen, maomao's foster dad, was told he's brought shame on he's family because of the "death" of concubine Ah-duo's baby, back in episode 10-11. Since he had been the doctor in charge, he was made a pariah and cast out of the rear palace, bringing shame to his family.

Loved your reactions. Ange is so observant! He never won against her in Go but he still picked Go, in a way he wanted her to win and fulfill whatever wish she had. It was pretty selfless. None of them were very vocal about their feelings but they cared for each other in their own way. ❤

I think one of the underrated best moments of this episode, is that when they make the wager Lakan chooses Go as the game they play. It's the symbolism of it being Lakan's or Fengxian's decision for what happens that night, and he gave her the agency to choose. Though not only did he give her the choice, Lakan wanted to know what she wanted instead. I also think this highlights the fact that Lakan isn't entirely to blame either, and that part of her planning was done on her own. The real tragedy is that if both people said more this could've been avoided, but even Lakan says after their night together that no words were said, and that they're similar in that aspect.

I think it was more that he was a doctor in the rear palace specifically, so he had to be a eunuch, ending his bloodline. That, combined with the fact that after all that, he got kicked out, is what brought shame.

AD's story weaving tho? Preparing us for Fengxian's plot of "lowering her value" by introducing such courtesan practices to us in ep 3. Reminding us that not everything is what it seems (e.g. Lakan). Fengxian's singing scene almost mirroring the humming by that brothel lady in ep 8, and in that scene Maomao narrates: *_She appears fragile, but she's actually quite clever._* which perfectly encapsulates the women in the show, often underestimated but will use this fact and their cunning to survive a world that has disadvantaged them.

Not sure on the light novel, but in the manga MaoMao added powder substance not a liquid to the drinks. The substance is a mix of salt and sugar. As per the reasoning given in the manga, salt and sugar hastens the effect/absorption of alcohol in the body.

I love Lakan, especially with some of the recent manga chapters. He has his share of character flaws, but I think he's a really compelling character.

At first It seemed like Lakan intentionally lowered Fengxian value. But it was Fanxian who actually trapped Lakan😄. Fangxian thought by the time she gets pregnant, Lakan will come. But unfortunately Her luck run out and Lakan was forced to go study abroad.

Actually I don’t. I noticed in other comments he was at war, but I think he thrived in that environment to an extent that he forgot about Fengxian or rather did’t feel any urgency to contact her. Since her letters to him never arrived he may not has felt a sense of urgency. However, while excuses can be made he had over 24 months or 700 days to send her even one note I deem this a fault. I think he may feel somewhat the same since he accused himself of not paying attention and misunderstanding the one letter from her he received. It’s pretty clear he was not told about her being at the brothel upon his return and so Fengxian and her friends at the brothel had some reason to keep this secret.

I love these last two episodes. Some questions will be indeed answered in the last episode, but i won't talk about the last episode. But i thought about Lakans and Maomao situation and let me speculate a bit .... Imagine a joung Maomao ... three years old. Lakan comes back from his studies abroad, finding out that his great love Fengxian is "gone" and she has a child from him. Now he is desperate to make up for his failure and at least care for Maomao. But Maomao does not know this man and the Old Lady tries to keep Maomao from him, so he probably tried desperate things to get her. I can imagine that must have been traumatizing for Maomao.

There's an important detail here if you know Chinese. The balsam's Chinese is 鳳仙, and its pronunciation is fengxian. (You can listen carefully.) The woodsorrel's nickname is cat's foot. Cat's Chinese is 貓, its pronunciation is mao. This is how FengXian name her daughter, and it is also the same reason they draw cat ear on MaoMao's head.

I had stopped watching after episode 21. I just wasn't into the whole detective thing every episode. I decided to finish since you two are watching it. The story with her father is my favorite part. It was so tragic but so beautiful at the same time. Well worth finishing. How everything connected was so well done.

I've said this many times and I'll say it again, Lakan did nothing wrong. Too this day (Light Novel volume 10) Maomao hates Lakan even though she should be hating Fengxian as she was a horrrible mother. There is just no justification anymore for Maoamo to hate him. The only stated reason is petty jealousy of his genius which makes Maoamo actively unlikable. I'm so freaking tired of Maoamo just being a dick to him for no reason.

Lakan’s fault was his enjoyment of his 2 year absence he failed to try to close with Fengxian. Even if her letters to him were blocked his failure to contact her is his negligence.

⁠his fault was his not reaching out to Fengxian. He was enjoying himself and ignored her. He was trying to mean or selfish just foolish. The consequences were many years of atonement ahead of himself.

Enjoying war terrible character. I think enjoy war is misunderstood, I doubt he found pleasure in death and violence. However, War was a reality and the glory of success was part of almost all cultures. However in Lakan’s case I think it was like a GO or Shoji game were putting the right people/assets at the right place and time resulted in combat success. This ability strategy was valued by the society. He may not have cherished their approbation but like his games he enjoyed the game and challenges they engendered. It was this recognition of his skill by society and I suspect family as well as successfully implementing his plans against opponents. Given how he was treated before his wartime success it was a bit intoxicating driving out his thoughts on Fengxian. It was this seduction from his success that he realized was part of his failure to understand Fengxian’s letter (albeit like her daughter she did not communicate well). His sense of guilt on this failure of his drove a lot of his misery as well as the condemnation from the Vertigris House prob with one exception Meimei who understood Lakan and Fengxian feeling and their prideful weaknesses that caused the such misery. I remain mad at Lakan but also the conspiracy that hid Fengxian situation after his return. There is truly blame to go around and atonement needed. I think Maomao really understood the whole situation and like Ah-Duo’s regretting the stupidly of people who injured themselves and others unnecessarily. I think this contributes to her lack of familiar feelings for her biological parents and her Chetishing her adopted father, Lakan’s Uncle, and her big sisters (especially the motherly Pairin and the loving Meimei) as well as the tough old lady. Jim’s the third princess has very little said about her so I struggle with her. But her toughness and aloofness makes her the most Maomao-like of the Princesses.
