Here's a couple of tips on where to start when you're thinking of running in the fells/hills/mountains of the English Lake District. Or anywhere for that matter. These tips aren't exclusive to the Lake District but are for anyone whose's thinking of going trail or hill running in the countryside. I'll be honest, this isn't the most comprehensive of videos. I'm sure there's better videos here on YT but this is mine.
Enjoy :)

The strength training tip is extremely valuable as I can attest to , particularly where knees are concerned 👌

Excellent video, great to see you back. I remember heading up there when I was about 12, with Scouts, felt like the middle of the wilderness at the time, cracking area. Top tip about strength training, like most runners I dodged it all of my running life, until recently. Shoes are a funny thing, back in the day I just used Walsh PBs for everything, (as that was about all there was, and they were/are bloody brilliant and sticky as and can be resoled!) Then along came Inov8 and changed everything. As you said, there is no one-for-everything model! Looking forward to next video. Thank you 🙂

It can’t be stressed enough the benefits of strength work to mitigate injury.. I really need to be disciplined with doing it more often. Thing is I really enjoy it too but when the sun is shining it’s difficult to spend time indoors when all you want to do is run across fells 😂

Trail running is a gateway drug to fell running and fell running is twice as addictive 😉 if you’re into hiking and have been hiking up in the Lakes or anywhere else for that matter you’re halfway there. Go for it 💪🏻 :)

Good point on shoes, I never thought I would need more than one pair, but now have a couple of pairs to deal with varying conditions in the Peak District, covers hard limestone to serous mud!

Hi John It’s good to see you back out on the fells again What’s the Garmin you use that you have on a lanyard? I’m looking for something like that but can’t seem to find it for sale anywhere All the best Alan 🏃🏻👍

Quality video and great wisdom imparting in the ways of fell running! If I lived nearer to the Lake District, I'd be tempted to have a go on the fells. I do plenty of trail running in Derbyshire at the moment. Do you have to be wary of upsetting land owners where there isn't a path?

Hi Mark thanks for the interest. No mate not really you just have to be considerate and respectful and avoid fields and areas where they’re working. Just use common sense :)

Love it mate, as always. I must fall into the small proportion of viewers. I’ve never fell run before, I’ve never cross country ran, and rarely do road running (getting into it now). I’ve always been a gym enthusiast and a fell hiking / wild camping enthusiast. But you’ve proper motivated me to try fell running, so I’m training for it. I love the idea of moving fast through the fells and it looks as though it’s okay to do it at a calm pace - so this motivates me. Just one question if I may… I understand that different kit is needed for different occasions. I’m about to take a leap and buy trail runners. The routes I want to do will largely be rocky - love the Scafells, Helvellyn range, Pillar, and G Gable - all around that area. So which one of your three pairs would you recommend and I’ll add them to cart! Oh, quick second Q actually - anything you recommend about socks? Obviously I got loads of hiking kit, but I’m thinking this won’t cut it. Cheers brother

Hey Simon good to hear from you and that you’re looking to start trail running. You’re right, just because you’ve got all your running gear on doesn’t mean you have to hammer it about the fells like Kilian Jornet, be chill and enjoy it and run when you feel like it. However, when you’ve been used to carrying a pack and wearing boots bouncing about in a pair of trail shoes and the bare essentials is quite liberating. As for shoes mate. Q. For you. What type of road shoes do you have? Are you a zero drop kinda guy? Or do you like a bit if a heel? If you’re zero drop Altra make good trail shoes. However, if you’re like me I tend to switch about. But to specifically answer the Q. about shoes in the area of running you’ve mentioned.. my personal preference at the moment is La Sportiva Mutants. I’ve mentioned them to you before. They have a 10mm drop. Having said that, some people don’t like high drop shoes for down hills as it can aggravate knee niggles etc. However, the number one thing to mitigate knee issues is good strength work and you’ve been smashing the gym so kudos. Hope this helps mate. If you want more advice DM me.. shoes are a MASSIVE topic with a 1001 opinions!! 😂

@@lakelandtrailrunner thanks for such a detailed reply mate. You should charge for consultation… I honestly don’t know the answer to your question, I’m below novice. I simply grabbed myself a pair of Nike runners for £100 and said they’ll do haha. Funnily enough, I can see the Mutants are actually cheaper - coming in at £90 today. scott supertrac 3 also coming in around that price. Although I’m not motivated by cost. I just expected them to be more - used to buying hiking boots. I need to evaluate how I run. I know there’s places you can go to get this assessed and you can get recommended runners based on this. But I’m way too lazy for that. Love the look of the Mutants and I think I’m going to pull the trigger… I appreciate you getting back to me John 🙏🏻
