The number of A- holes who don't understand you ALWAYS give way to uphill traffic astounds me! love those passes!
@DaveBartlett2 ай бұрын
...though etiquette would expect uphill cars to allow downhill motorcycles and pedal cycles to pass, since some of the inclines, on Hardknott especially, would leave downhill motorcyclists almost facing down to the road when giving way to oncoming cars travelling uphill: it's difficult to stop for any length of time in that situation without coming off!

Well done, man. I've driven over several times in a car and to be honest I've never really understood what all the fuss was about, even though I was a biker for 15 years or so, but it looks a hell of a lot tougher on a bike. Biggest problems I found were people not pulling over that were coming the other way - those of you who are going to have a go, remember if you're going downhill you're supposed to stop, you don't want to risk of the guy going uphill rolling back. Road surfaces are dodgy, be careful of potholes and missing chunks of road at the edges, especially on bends, and don't risk it if you don't have a decently powerful, well maintained car because you'll be putting it under a lot of strain that it's not used to. If you haven't don't risk it. I did see a 1 ltr VW Polo with a burnt out clutch once, but there were about 7 people in it. I'll leave it to you to imagine where they were from, but you'd probably be right. I've also seen a couple of EVS struggling which seemed a bit off as I thought they had a lot of torque? And sheep will keep out of your way but cows do have a tendency to wander in front of you. Luckily you don't see many. And finally, of you have done the first bit (Wrynose) and don't fancy the harder Hardknott pass, go left instead of right at the Eskdale signpost, down the right side of the (farmhouse?). It's a long flat run, goes on for quite a good few miles but you see even less cars so it's a really pleasant run and a good alternative. Where were you on the video just after the 30 minute mark? The part with the lake on the right and the mountains in the distance ahead? That's one of the best views I've seen from the road, in a county that's full of amazing views. And by the way guys, let the bikers through, they can't hold the machine on a steep hill easily if they need to stop, you don't have that problem in a car.

Good video brought back many memories. Last time I did it there was a group of about a dozen bikes all went up there camping. We rode the passes e of the local riders was a friend who only had a 125 cruiser and was worried her bike would make it. She decided she would ride pillion with my mate but as he had never rode it before she decided to pillion with me. 2 of us on a CBR 100 blackbird made it ok. One of our party had a moment on that hairpin bend and how they never went over I will never know. It was about 12 or 13 years ago and didn't have action camera back then such a shame.

Not a bike rider but have driven these passes. Hardnott Pass is by far the toughest road i've driven (driven Atlas mountains, Philippines Mountain Provence, Switzerland and few others). Sat nav took us over it a few years ago in my Fiat 500 was not prepared for that. Done Wrynose twice now once in Fiat 500 and last week in my Peugot Expert campervan. The wife wouldnt let me go over Hardnott again she hated it scared her. What makes Hardnott so tough is the lack of distance between hairpins, the steepness and blind summits. Just been over te Bealach Na Ba which by comparision felt like driving on a motorway.

Nice ride Bike Soul, I have done that three times, twice on the bike (CBR 1000) and once in the car with the wife but in the opposite direction from Ravenglass, honestly we found the drive in car more scary than on the bike, some of the hairpins on the way up the road totally disappears and all you can see is the bonnet you haven't a clue which way the road is going. Thanks for the video, ride safe. Best wishes Pete and Jan.

Two things I noticed that really got my attention. 1. The roads are REALLY NARROW why are they made like that? 2. MILES OF ROCK FENCE, How long does it take to pile rocks that high for miles? I have never seen a fence built that way. Are the fences really old, or are they built by really bored people? Amazing

Years ago I was on a European tour riding in the alps maritime amazed at the competence or madness of the foreign adv bikes absolutely caning me on my fjr1300. Every hairpin up or down was a scary experience until one day me and my group were talking to some Italians and the subject got round to bike control on these short sharp turns with horrendous drop offs. Since their advice I have never had a problem. Their method they told me of is trail braking. ( feathering rear brake as you ride. So on wobbly bends you apply the rear brake just enough for it to tie the suspension up and you have the brake applied throughout the bends at the same time as some slight throttle) try it -it really works and practice it on slow manoeuvres around the car park with a nd without the brake on and see the control difference then learn it as a skill. It takes practice to feel you have it right. Its also great for high speed bends when you are worried about judgment. Now as an aged old git riding a v strom650 and light and manoeuvrable and can do everything the big bikes can do imo but in a more manageable form.

Thanks posting that, my hands went clammy reliving some of that. 👍 I did Hardnott and Wrynos last year on my oil head GS. we did it West to East. Unfortunately, at the steepest hairpin I had not choice but to pull over to the right and stop, to let 3 guys who were "committed" to taking the bend coming Down, on my side of the road, they had no choice as you probably know, as that spot is about 1 : 3 !! And tight as he'll, I then from a Standing start had to go Up and Right round the hairpin, bit of a challenge on GS that I'd only ridden for a couple of months. Needless to say, the clutch wasn't happy and I was Bricking it ! 😝😝😝 Not for the faint hearted that road. Roj Preston

"Wrynose Pass" - not "Win-nose"; (pronounce it like "Rhinos".) The name originated from "Wrenhaise Hill" which developed from "reini hala" being a combinaiton of the old Norse words: "reini" (stallion) and "hala" (ridge). "Hardknott Pass" - the name Hardknott originated again, from Old Norse being the combination of "hartr" (hard) and "knutr" (craggy hill).
