I always loved Lake Speed. Who doesn’t love a driver with a racing name! Legend!

Lake was the first driver I offically rooted for. I can recall as a young child seeing him win that race in Darlington in the purple and white Wynn/K Mart Oldsmobile. And then I recall his races in the Purex Ford. Would have been great to see what he could have done with his own team had they been able to secure a solid financial backing.

Lake’s performance in the 28 shows that he really was a guy that didn’t get a fair shot with top tier equipment. He did run ‘94 with Bud Moore, but Moore was on the decline as a team by that point. And he still finished 11th in the points, only 45 outside the top 10.

Sounds like if you didn’t end up in some of these crazy circumstances that he would’ve have been one of the legendary drivers of nascar. Great history lesson as always. Keep up the great work

I always wondered why Lake only drove the 28 for s few races and then Erine was in it and Lakes was in the 15. So cool to fill in nascar history from my childhood thanks for these videos Mitchell and Logan.

If/when you get back to his shop please check out that boat and setup for us fast boat freaks. Back in the 70s-80s that bad boy was top of the line, probably a 60-65mph rig which was fast back then. With a modern jack plate and prop you may see 70 or a little more out of it today. Guessing it's a 150 or 175hp merc. 200/225 carbs would kick it up a notch too as would low water pickups and another trick or 2 on the lower unit.

The 15 Quality Care scheme was a rad one. I had high hopes for Lake on that one until it fell though.

More Great Racing History ! What if that transmission did Not fail in the 28 car, Lake could have really showed his talent . Back in the day I was running the Race Fan Shop and I did get a few of the Nebraska diecast cars , if I remember right they were made by RacingChampions brand. Keep up the Great work and the rest of the stories.

I don't believe there's ever been a race fan to ever not pull for Lake. I know I did every time he was on track. Had circumstances leaned more in his favor he definitely would have been an even bigger legend than he already is. Thanks Mitchell & Logan for sharing all the history. So your videos have made me track down all my Nascar stuff I had packed away, Ive spent HOURS goin thru boxes and I thank you 🤘. I found my Iroc Camaro Promo of Dale Sr., my deck of Davey trading cards, Daveys 1/64th car I thought I lost, ALL of my Dale Sr. Winston race special paint schemes in 1/64th and my signed 6 time champion poster of Sr. Diggin thru my boxes and explaining to my boy the significance of theses cars and people was cool. Keep em comin guys!

It's like "If it weren't for bad luck, we had no luck at all". There are so many parts and components that make up a race car but one part can shut it all down. Then factor in sponsorship & the other humans side.

Mitchell, what you need to do is find a way to put all these guys together for a vintage event. Rusty, Mark, Sterling, Lake. Darrell, Schrader etc, etc. Have them bring out the old cars and run laps. I find the NASCAR of the 70, 80, 90 FAR FAR more interesting than NASCAR of today. Back then they had moxie, determination, creativity, seat of the pants wicked intelligence. They worked their ass off cause they had too . They had to work smarter than the next guy. I recall so much about what they acheived in the past. Cale running 200 at Daytona, Elliott at 212 at Talladega, the screaming howl of Sterlings Kodak car, Kulwicki and the Underbird. The innovation, you always were waiting for the next "thing" to come along. The fascinating personalities. What history will we recall in 30 years or will it even be interesting. What personalities stand out today comparing to the ones mentioned aside from one or two Today, just spend money and buy a Spec Kit car. Yawn, boring. Dont forget your poster boy corporate PR man / race car driver ZZZZZZZZZZ Today it seems to have lost its charm. The answer to everything is to spend more money.Its lost its charm, color, the spectacle of the show. Its just one big advertisement now. Same thing has happened in drag racing. The is no more "show".

He had some lousy luck for some reason he obviously is a real good driver stinks that he did not find a solid team with a good sponsor.

I guess losing your chamionship head coach to retirement and running a 4 million dollar nascar in the same year isn't a great idea.

Mr Speed would have been the best fit at Yates. I remember pulling for him back then & then hugely disappointed when Ernie jumped in. Erinie never fit that ride. Sad deal.
