The "time capsule" Ford C3 engine is modernized and on the dyno! Back in July we pulled this 1990s NASCAR engine out of Lake Speed's former Winston Cup shop to find out how much power it lost after sitting untouched for 18 years. Along with Lake Jr and Total Seal we have created a whole series showing the modern upgrades we have done to this time capsule engine. How much power will it make? Lets find out before this engine goes back into his 93 Thunderbird for 75 year old Lake Speed to get back on the track for the first time in 18 years!

Funny that I have little to zero interest but can watch your videos on what was all day long. You guys do a great job of bring back what I would call the heyday if NASCAR. I was a huge Bill Elliott/Alan Kulwicki /Ford fan. Here's one for ya, I have a WoodenOdden Kulwicki collectible? Does anyone know anything about these? (It's a Kulwicki Hooters Tbird carved from wood. Received it as a gift back in 1991. Story I got was NASCAR shut the guy down because it wasn't licensed? Another reason you guys resonate here, I've got a 96 40' Fleetwood American Dream Coach I'm currently traveling in . . . get tons of compliments from folks with newer coaches. It's not a Newell but it's screwed together better than most of today's coaches, looks and runs great. No slides but Spartan Xtra wide frame cures a lot of ills. Hats off to both of you!

@SPEEDiagnostix me too brother, Lake was always a guy I pulled for in the 90s. I was a hard-core Earnhardt fan but I always liked the independent guys like your dad. You was born 30 yrs too late. I can remember living near 5 nascar shops not 1 near where they all are now. Some were around Charlotte but not all. In 98 I can remember hearing a car practicing at Greenville p track in the middle of a week day near my work. But this one sounded different, so we drove the 1/2 mile to see Jeff Gordon making some test laps for Martinsville. Stuff like that happened all the time. I lived across the road In traveler's rest sc 1986.. from the quaker state Ricky rudd driver.. Buick team. When I was a teen I lived down the road from the Skoal bandit shop Asheville NC . Think Leo Jackson? owned it then. Both buildings in SC and Asheville NC still there. It's sad what nascar has come to. And sheet metal? Just go grab it out of the dumpster.. nobody cared 😂 different times you and Logan would have absolutely loved the 80s God bless you two..

We had an engine builder one time for our late model and he thought we needed valve lash caps because of some spec he had learned. I guess the book said to use them. Well, some of those caps came off and we dropped a valve first race of the season. Oh well, guess the engine builder learned something from that experience.

My favorite smell is vp108 and synthetic 2 stroke oil. It has to be below freezing air temperatures though for it to smell sweet. The vp108 through a 4 stroke is pretty good though. As for engine oil, there is meeting api specs, and there is exceeding them. The penzoil platinum is one of many that truly exceed the specifications. Amsoil and mobile 1 are others. In my non racing, but non easy use gas applications I use Walmart synthetic. It’s quality and cheap.

This was by far one of my most favorite documented rebuild/resto series. So much great information and a lot of great people. It's insane how a few little tricks applied to some old school parts can transform an engine in a big way. Really enjoyed this one. The API 20 rating mentioned earlier isn’t all encompassing though. I’m a staunch believer of Pennzoil and have been for 30 years. I do have a couple of things to add to the importance of using the correct oil that you or someone on the channel may not be aware of. The gig you made about a lawnmower blowing up goes along with what I’m talking about. For most engines built since around the mid to late 80’s until present these newer oils are fine,as the newer recipes used in oil today have a lower content of zinc in the mixture. This is fine for roller camshafts and the engines with narrower ring packages. Older engines that employ flat tappet camshafts and the wider ring packs rely more heavily on oils with higher zinc concentrations. The zinc for lack of a better way to explain it creates a coating to all of the valleys and peaks similar to what you learned in the ring honing episode for the cylinders. That microscopic layer is imperative to the longevity of flat tappet camshafts and lifters because of the lubricity properties of zinc especially on startup and break in. I’ve been dragged into more than one engine repair on a non roller cam setup due to my buddies swapping in a cam and trying to use synthetic oil while also having higher spring pressures along with improper break in procedure. My point is this, the new oils are excellent and do an excellent job for the engines utilizing newer technology. The new oils however aren’t all encompassing. For people who aren’t sure what to use they need to do some research on their setup and speak to individuals who are actually knowledgeable about such things. Talk to the guys at a local machine shop or two instead of the kid at the auto supply who can’t make change but can look things up on the store computer. My apologies for being so long winded, I grew up around a family owned automotive garage that has been passed down from my great grandfather that was big enough that we had our own machine shop and learned to grind valves,seats and knurl guides before the age of 10. Love the channel and what you’re doing. Stapleton, if this is a bit much for the channel or KZfaq I’ll understand completely if you need to delete it, I almost didn’t type any of it but felt obligated to at least make an attempt at a helpful tidbit. Anyway keep up the great work and don’t lash anymore valvetrains with paper. 👍
@Stapleton42
@Stapleton42 Жыл бұрын
I understand and agree with all of that. This topic is worthy of its own lecture series so I kept it short and simple for the integration. If you have a modern car and use API SP approved oil in it…it’s not going to blow up no matter the brand 😂

IMHO don't worry about what the viewers want. Keep doing what you want. The views and subs will come because of your creativity and content. You will never give everybody what they want. I rarely like videos longer than 15 or 20 minutes. However, yours are the exception, so again, you're doing something right.

Great video guys! I'm always on the edge of my seat, especially for these Lake Speed vids. My name is Lake too and I've always been into racing. Growing up in Indy it sorta came with the territory. For years I've heard "There's a NASCAR racer named Lake, ya know." Your videos have been such an incredible history lesson of his career. Thank you so much!

Almost 70,I have so many great memories of NASCAR & the legends from the mid 60's to the early 2000's! It was so great to see the teams switching to Fords back then! Junior,Penske,Lake & others,it really made me feel good! Bless all the independents, with their one car teams,with less funding than the big multi car teams! Always pulled a little harder for them to do well! Best of luck to y'all!❤🏁

I have been following the Lake Speed engine build. You have assembled the most complete series I have ever seen. Lake Speed Sr and Jr are awesome. I could listen to Jr break down a race engine in every detail for hours. He is the best I have seen. That being said I am not a big NASCAR guy more a NHRA fan. Still I soak up the knowledge. Congratulations on a great series.

Hey Mitchell and Logan, I have an oil and filter story. I had an new 1989 Toyota truck I broke in properly as toyota recommended for the first 1k miles. It had the 22 r carburetor engine and I had 440.000 miles on it when I traded it in and it looked brand new inside, Here`s the kicker, Oh yes and also I red lined it to 6500 rpm more then any other vehicle i ever had. I use 10w 30w Quaker state green bottle conventional oil and FRAM oil filers the Standard cheapest Fram Filters and K and N air filter exclusively and I never had any issues EVER. I pulled it apart at 425k miles and the bearings and wear surfaces almost looked like the day it was made No copper showing on the bearings And this was with the AC running in the Arizona in the 110 to 116 degree weather. It was a 4 speed trans. So I put it back together and it fired right up. So there is my story on oil and filter combos. Noting like the sound of a SBF OR SBC at 9k on the dyno.

Excellent video, was out of town all day yesterday so just now getting this in my videos! Here with you all a day late but here just the same, very interesting tech video, and it's sure appreciated to know that you both went to a lot of effort to produce this and other videos for us to view! LMAO on setting solid lifters, have had similar experiences with an LS6 454 engine in a boat that ran much better when we set the lash hot instead of ice cold. It's all about learning! Thank you & Logan for this cool video!

@@Stapleton42 Yep. As long as gasoline or other fuels exist old cars will still be run. Especially with how Toyota figured out how to run engines in pure hydrogen, so eventually we may see v8s running hydrogen and still making v8 music.

Even knowing nothing about building an engine, this is my new favorite series so far. Loved the Richard Petty series, but hearing that engine screaming again is awesome. Can't wait to see Lake running it. I like the new format. Hits all the high points, makes the video smoother, and lets you put out separate videos with even more specific content (like the carb info you said would be it's own thing). Thanks for what yall do.

Just watched the segment on Lake Sr talking about leading Talledega. I believe this race was in 1980 and also this is the motor that came from a shop at the end of a dirt road. I helped build this engine as I was working for Bobby Brown then. Also sometimes when your father would pick these engines up he would stay over at my house so he wouldn’t have to drive back to Jackson so late at night. Love these stories as y’all have brought them back to life.
