The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Josh Rogosin | April 27, 2021
Lake Street Dive filmed its Tiny Desk (home) concert where the band is most at home: on stage at the “biggest little venue in NYC,” Pete’s Candy Store. All five band members managed to squeeze onto a stage no larger than the actual Tiny Desk to shine a spotlight on the Save Our Stages Act. Congress passed the $15 billion grant program last December as part of the $900 billion coronavirus relief bill. In the middle of the home concert, bassist Bridget Kearney recalls driving to the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn for a gig at Pete’s, then driving back to Boston the very same night, long before they ever sold out Radio City Music Hall on the other side of the East River.
It’s hard to believe the band has released seven studio albums. Its latest, Obviously, provided the setlist for this intimate performance and prominently features the newest member and co-songwriter, keyboard and vocalist Akie Bermiss. Hopefully we’ll all be packed into tight venues again soon, adding the thunderous applause we’re all yearning to contribute. Until then, we’ll just have to settle for clapping at our screens.

Okay, I don't want to take away anything from the rest of this band, who are just excellent in every respect, but I have to point out that this bass player is making that standup sound like a bass guitar, which absolutely blows my mind! Her timing, chops, tone and intonation are phenomenal! And ironically, I think it's the goal of many a bass guitarist to make their instrument sound like a standup bass... I'm so in awe here!

One morning my clock radio woke me up with "Good Kisser" and I sat up like I'd been hit with 240 volts. Could not understand what year it was or how this sound had escaped my notice. That was right when "Free Yourself Up" was released, and I've been on the train ever since. Blown away with each new release, and lucky to have seen them in Taos a couple years back. No better band today. Thanks, Tiny Desk!

Actually there is a long list of guitar players who move very little and contribute a lot: David Gilmour comes to mind first. This guitarist here is either out of tune or he’s just hitting a lot of flat notes by mistake, either way he is the weak point in this otherwise stellar band IMHO.

I haven’t been surprised by new music for a while now. I clicked on this thinking it would be mediocre music. Then BAM my face is melted with this lead singers voice. At first my eyes are saying that she is trying really hard and not much volume is coming out, but my ears are giving me goosebumps at how smooth and controlled that voice is. And that keys player, that is Stevie Wonder incarnate. Amazing show and amazing band!

These guys are the real deal, incredible musicians that are far more under appreciated than the majority of "pop" acts out here flexin' major label debt. Hope NPR continues featuring "working class" acts like them, Durand Jones, Los Hacheros and groups that are still loading their own gear into vans.

@@BluesManLeFever yeah they've been in the circuit for a while and glad they're doing great. I just like more organic bands. Like last tiny desk was Justin Bieber like I'm sure he started from humble beginnings before a major label swooped him up. I think my peeve is that a lot of major labels are influencing Tiny Desk these days and having artists that don't need that much more visibility than they already have ya know?

@@CiderSessions They've been having major label musicians on for a long time. Adele was on Tiny desk a decade ago. T Pain was on in 2013, John Legend in 2012. I love hearing great indy artists too, but I also like hearing major label artists people are familiar with recontextualized in the cozy, usually semi-acoustic setting of Tiny Desk. They do a lot of these, and there's plenty of room for both.

Other than Rachael who is a true phenom, the rest of the old gang are not big chop mongers, but they're all extremely musical players, tons of soul and feel, and good singers. The new guy is a terrific singer

Happily donated. Y'all are literally the best band out there, and anything to support live venues to bring you and other artists in the same position is more than worthy of a helping hand. Can't wait to finally see you live after all these years of being obesessed!

Lake Street Dive has talent for days. Immeasurable! It just doesn't translate to studio album productions. Live recordings are the best and I've seen them live even more impressed. Always love what they give.

If I were Rachael Price I would never just talk. I’d sing everything down to my pizza order. LSD is one of those bands that is so good you want the whole world to know about them. I was so happy to see them featured on Tiny Desk! Love the new stuff-but if you’ve never heard of them before, check out Bad Self Portraits, You Go Down Smooth, and some of their covers (like Faith). Anymore literally made me cry but their party jams can lift your spirits and defy you not to dance during tough times.
