Lake Toxaway is the largest private lake in North Carolina. This 640 acre beautiful lake has 14 miles of shoreline at 3,010 feet above sea level. The lake is fed by the crystal clean waters from the Nantahala & Pisgah National Forest.
In 1890 E.H. Jennings came to this area from Pennsylvania and established several businesses. One of the businesses was the Toxaway Company. Mr. Jennings loved the area known as Lake Toxaway today. It was known as the "Switzerland of America" back then. The lake was built by the Toxaway Company and filled in 1902. Lake Toxaway was the first artificial lake built in the Appalachian Mountains with an earthen dam 500 feet long, 60 feet high, and 20 feet wide. The lake has a max depth of 60 feet. In 1916, the area received 24 inches of rain in a 24 hour period. The dam gave way , which was engineered with a water level control , and 5 billion gallons of water crashed over the falls into South Carolina. Toxaway Falls which is below the lake shows the trauma of the dam burst, it's granite rock is exposed a great distance down the falls.
Toxaway Falls is an amazing 150 foot waterfall below the lake. The waterfall is amazing today - I could only imagine the flow of the waterfall prior to the lake?
Take advantage of the lake and surrounding areas just an hour from Asheville! Here are some of the main attractions:
. Cashiers, NC
. Brevard, NC
. Highlands, NC
. Whiteside Mountain
. Greystone Inn
. Dry Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Cullasaja Falls, Whitewater Falls, and so much more...
. Hendersonville, NC
. Dupont Forest
. And more and more ! I believe this summary would be endless.
Hope you enjoy the view of the lake and waterfall from the area once known as the Switzerland of America! Hope you enjoy the view from an bird's eye View!

In 1979, I rolled an 18 Wheeler right there at the beginning of the bridge that spans the falls. It was a tanker load of paint base and glue. The Trooper's name that investigated the accident was named Alex. Within ten minutes there were 100 people out there at the scene.

1:14 great shot ! I don't see anything that would use the water to generate power. Oh well, it does look beautiful ! Nice flying.

Appreciate your comments as always my friend! The lake wasn’t built to generate power or be an reservoir. More for a tourist attraction .
