You're correct that the engine is the Allison V-1710 which was used by several variants of the P-40 and the very early variants of the P-51. But in the case of this boat they purchased two LEFT HAND engines slated for the P-38 Lightning. The P-322-II to be exact. These 2 engines also were built without the turbosuperchargers and they counter rotated (left hand rotate) which was needed for the "off the shelf" 23 inch prop.

Actually these came from a P-38. And there were several different models of both the Allison V-12s and the Rolls Merlin V-12s. In fact the Merlins in P-51 Mustangs were Americanized, Packard Merlin engines. Packard made many tweaks and changes to speed production and reliability.

Allison engines were never regarded as highly as the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. But an Allison engine is great for a boat because the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine gained its Fame as a high-altitude engine it maintained its power at very high altitudes whereas the Allison engine did not.
