The first Enlightened Experience Celebration (EEC1) was proposed by Lama Yeshe, held in India from January to June 1982, and organized by the International Mahayana Institute. Nick Ribush was director of the EEC1 and describes the genesis of the Celebration in a follow up report: "We first heard of the Enlightened Experience Celebration from our kind compassionate teacher and spiritual guide, the Venerable Lama Thubten Yeshe, at the end of 1980. It was proposed as a gathering of as many as possible of the almost 100 monk and nun students of the International Mahayana Institute (IMI) to continue the process of bringing Buddhadharma to the West...Many lay Dharma students expressed an interest in joining the sangha in the proposed Celebration, and so the programme--although planned to be for advanced students with several years' study of Tibetan Buddhism behind them--was opened to all."
