The Supersport 950 is Ducati's answer to its customers who want something sporty for the street but don't want the super uncomfortable position which goes with it. New styling for 2021 and updated electronics but how does this little V twin compare to the likes of the RS660? Could this be the perfect road bike?

The issue reviewers get wrong all the time is comparing peak HP numbers. Engines make power from tick over to redline. This 950 engine makes it about as perfectly linearly as an electric motor. The total power it makes across the rev range is considerably more than the 660. But you are right that speed and acceleration are all power to weight. The lighter the bike, the faster it will go given the same power. Keep the 660 up in its power band and it will be faster. The nice thing about the Duc is the whole damn rev range is its power band. In any event, I'm not trying to set any lap records. On a road bike, a little road hugging weight isn't necessarily a bad thing when it comes to comfort, confidence, and cutting thru a windy day. This reminds me of a smaller version of my ST4s. And that was one of my favorite sporty road bikes ever. This one is giving me the itch...

Guessing you've ridden one, because you describe my experience perfectly. I had one for a few days as a courtesy bike while my Multi (1200, so you know my perspective) was having it's Desmond. Thought the 950 engine was one of the most perfect road engines I've ever used, and I had 6 years with a gear cam VFR800. Full of character (the burbles when pootling around, the little (probably engineered, but who cares) pops and crackles on he overrun), instant, seamless pull everywhere, exciting to give the beans without being terrifying, and geared perfectly. Couldn't care less about the on paper stuff. It felt amazing, whether full-on going for it or just a nice Sunday morning 50-60% mild pick-me-up pace.

I am so happy that manufacturers are making lower power supersports that are friendlier for road use. Like this one, the aprilia, new R7 (hopefully an R9 as well). What many riders dont know or even understand is how much fun lower powered bikes are to ride fast. 120hp+ is a good time dont get me wrong but there are times i would love to play around on something between 50-100hp.

Just about to trade in my 2018 super sport S in, has full akropovics on it, sounds immense and a lot of carbon, absolute stunning bike. Pick my new 2021 Supersport S up next week, can’t wait. Best road bike I have ever owned and I’ve had quite a few! Mates have fireblades etc and unless it’s long straights you can keep up on say a day out to the coast. Had 152mph record on the clocks and 140mph up hill, on the track lol Immense grip and feel with the Ohlins Mirrors vibrate a bit, so what. 10/10 for me that’s why i have just bought another 👍

Nice review LCR, I’ve had my Ducati SS for 3 years and love it, the ride and comfort is superb. Ducati prefer to call it a sport tourer rather than a track bike. It’s pretty powerful and more than enough for the roads. It’s a great handling bike and a fine all rounder. Agree the mirrors are useless and disappointed Ducati haven’t fixed it on the new updated model.

Brilliant review chops [as always]. What a lovely looking bike. Why aren't more manufactures making bikes like this. Imagine a Yamaha like this with the new MT09 lump in it [it would be fab]. Or a Triumph with the Tiger 900 engine [retuned for a bit more top end]. I think manufactures are genuinely missing out. We all don't want tall adventure bikes, a naked or a modern classic. I am hoping this, the Aprilia 660 and the new Yam YZF R7 are going to change things a bit. Keep them coming mate and take care.

@whybe400 2 жыл бұрын
@@rudolphcarr Sorry for the late reply. They seem about the same, but the Ducs power comes a little more linear. The Aprilia had kind of a little hole from where she then pushed through. I did like the low rpm power of the duc more, but it also vibrates quite a bit more to the point where mirrors are practically useless while speeding up or driving low rpm. Bought my supersport 950s yesterday. :-) The duc has more torque but it's also quite a bit heavier, the torque is measured without taking weight into account. So you should not make your decision from those numbers but actually ride both of them. Take every test drive you can do, in my experience that's easily possible.

The styling is beautiful, the suspension absolutely fantastic, the brakes absolutely awesome, but not so keen on the lump in the middle ! Torque is good 👍🏼 feel it could do with a few more horses, nothing excessive, but a few more ! It is a bit vibey, but nothing excessive, mirrors are virtually useless, if they was to make this a slightly bigger capacity v4, I’d be first inline to buy one !

Great review! What a let down those mirrors. I'm considering this for me i next bike but these mirrors... Should they be show stoppers? Considering you've got Ninja 1000SX which is far better but for the looks department. Ducati beats it silly there.... I'm confused 🤔

Interesting. I've just bought one (I'm picking it up this weekend). The exhaust pipes as part of the overall design were one of the things that sold me on it, especially with the white colour scheme. But I guess that's the beauty of biking, everyone has different likes and dislikes which is what makes visiting various biker haunts so interesting.

The bike has similar power to the original 916 superbike. It has plenty of power for road use. I have the previous model and it's fantastic. A mate of mine has 959 and we occasionally swap rides. The Supersport is a far superior road bike. The only small minus is you miss the aggressive personality of the superbikes but you can't have the best of both worlds. The Supersport is a bloody good compromise though.

Agreed. Loved everything about the Supersport S when I tested one a couple of years ago - except for the 'go'. Just felt a bit wheezy compared to the R1200S Beemer I had at the time. The dealer said Ducati won't do a 1200 version. Been proved right so far. Shame. Reckon they're missing a trick - and a sale to me. Bought a 1250RS Beemer instead.

Had the old 600ss in the 90's which was great fun but under powered. Glad to see a useable and comfortable proper road sporster instead of the insane horsepower race on totally impractical bikes. The ultimate road bike in this class was and will for me always remain, the hugely grin inducing aprilia rsvr gen 1 Mille. Nothing I've ridden on the road comes close to fun, sound or visceral exoerience of a proper hairy chested man sized bike. Ducati fave gone backwards and failed. Tbe old mile would wipe its nose on grunt/power and sound plus was comfy enough for long tours. I'd buy an older gen1 rsvr instead of putting three times the money into this and get a better bike.

I recently bought the 2017 939 Supersport with 2159 km on it in excellent condition. standard model. and I think the suspension is great on it. but I have never ridden the S to compare it too. l love my bike. its such a nice machine. I don't considerate it to to vibey. but the mirrors think otherwise. and it doesn't like being at 1 or 2000 rpm. other than that the power band of the engine is so usable and the bike is full of character.

Great video as always! Regarding the SuperSport 950 S vs. the RS660 acceleration... On paper, it would look like the RS660 would be faster, but the best numbers during a road test for these bikes are as follows... ** The (Ducati SuperSport 950 S)... 0-60 mph = 3.26 - 1/4 Mile = 10.99 @ 128 mph - Top Speed = 152.9 mph. ** The (Aprilia RS660)... 0-60 mph = 3.29 - 1/4 Mile = 11.23 @ 124 mph - Top Speed = 147 mph. I know these are just magazine tests, but they still use professional equipment, so it gives us a basic idea of how quick these bikes are. I'm guessing the SuperSport 950 S probably has better gearing & it's probably also underrated in it's power figures? Just guessing? Anyway, I love your camera angles, and I absolutely think your MC videos are incredible! Safe travels! -Chris

Owned this for nearly a year now. The thing that surprised me is that it feels much quicker than the spec sheet; granted, I'm a small chap who's not much bigger than a jockey, but I've ridden motorcycles with more power (Triumph Street Triple) that didn't really feel quicker. As an aside, the RS 660 felt a lot slower (and more cheaply-made) than the Ducati - there was this dead spot in the RPM range on the 660... I imagine that's the lower torque figures. The RS 660 wins the agility sheet, but the Ducati feels like a much more premium machine, and it is quicker and faster (even if not by miles). I've had some good track days on the 950S, and even ride it to work year-round - it reminds me of the old Ducati 916, but with far better tech - the 916 was a top-tier performer of its day, and is still quick by any standard that isn't a race-replica or super-naked, which is why I bought a 950S Supersport instead of a V2 Panigale - I loved test-riding the V2 (several times), and it's fast as hell, but just doesn't have a power-band I'd consider usable for street use on the regular. In my view, people buying the 950S are those who want an 'oldschool' sports bike that could work the track as well as the street without making you hate your time on either, even if you weren't as good as a 'dedicated' machine for either purpose. Indeed, that definitely means compromise, since the 950S isn't as comfortable as a naked or sports-tourer nor as quick as a 'true' supersport, but the fact that it's good at both jobs makes it pretty unique these days as I see it, and I welcome disagreement on that (you won't offend me!). Cheers.

@@axist2389 Twice, yes. Really like it - with the adjustable Ohlins, you can really dial it in proper-like for track work, and the engine has brilliant boot out of corners. There's some videos of riders far better than me taking the 950S around Autodromo Vallelunga here on KZfaq - you can see that it really goes very well for its power.

Thanks for posting. I test drove the 2020 model last October. Loved the riding. The one thing I did not like was the exhaust (I know, I am shallow). Your comments are dead on. The quick shifter was like butter. Was tempted to get it, but nothing was coming out Italy at the time. Plus the dealer did not know when the new model would start arriving. Finally, did I mention I was not fond of the exhaust. IMHO, it made the bike look like a toy (to me anyway). It was a bit pricey and the price was pretty close to the Pannigale. Great video, very enjoyable.

Surprising grunt this engine in 821 and 937 hypermotard formats when worked hard - Strong to 200kph and stretch to 220 sort of thing - Hopefully euro5 hasn't neutered that - And a pity only 16l tank as 200km range a bit light for touring unless constantly planning or filling up everywhere - But Ducati has created some very nice lightweight zip style panniers for touring on the Supersport anyway - Based on old Hyperstrada bags by the looks and they were superb - weighed nothing, quick to mount and good volume
