I remember when i was stationed in Norfolk I would drive by Lamberts Point every day to go to work. Then I'd also see it when the ships i was stationed on would go down the Elizabeth River to Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

I live in South Shields in the UK and I often visit ships that are unloading coal from Norfolk, I have realy enjoyed watching this video. The river Tyne many years ago used to export coal ,in 1923 23 000 000 of coal was exported in very small boats . My grandad used to be a skipper on these colliers. How things have changed , where I live now used to be a coal mine that sent the mine to the port of Tyne for export.

My father George W. Garland Sr. was the Assistant General Yard Master in charge of starting up pier 6. He often referred to coal as black gold. Dad was also involved in starting piers 4&5. During WW2 the port was closed but dad had to be there nights and on occasions I would spend the night sleeping on his desk. Pier 4 had pier cars and on one occasion he and the engineer, with much attention, let me drive the pier car onto the loader and pier so today I could say today I am the only living pier car driver!

Thanks for showing this video. I live in chicago, and most of NS's operations that I see is intermodal and tank unit trains. It was nice to see how a real rotary coal dumper actually wosrks.

This is the kind of pier Greenwich in Philadelphia should be again. Would be a perfect center for intermodal and the anthracite coal boom. But, of course unions and politics get in the way of that and ultimately no one wins.

This is naive, economically puerile nonsense. Only the unions and politics? Not the coal companies? Not the tectonic shift in the world fuel market and the switch to cheaper, plentiful, clean natural gas to make electricty which is the primary driver behind the power companies decision to abandon coal and oil as their fuels of choice? These are massive shifts in economic policy driven by for-profit companies seeking the highest return on investment. Bet your bottom dollar, they and their shareholders win so long as the world runs on electricty.

Norfolk southern requires safety glasses to be worn at all times while outside on their property. he's wearing safety glasses that fit over regular glasses.

True and also there is not going to be a need for coal in the future. Even if coal makes steel. It still won't be a need, cause any old steel they would melt it down and boom new steel.

@@dipsetny9291 problem is if you keep reusing the same recycled scrap metal and steel over and over again its strength goes down
