Thank you for making this video. I have always been interested in the anatomy of horses feet. I miss watching the Natural Balance Hoofcare Corner every week on Dennis Reis. It was my favorite part of the show. I just bought a walker who arrived yesterday. He has such underrun heels and long toes that he can't stand properly and although his gait is smooth as silk I know he can't be having fun. I called the farrier but I know it will take time to fix him up. This video will help.

What measuring tool is he using??? It looks handier than a ruler, especially for measuring a circular surface like a hoof!
@LamenessPreventionOrg4 жыл бұрын
That tool is called the JH Forge Hoof Evaluator (Divider). You can find them at www.shopedss.com or www.jhforge.com

(8:48) where the bars terminate in healthy hoof should be a straight line from the heel to the apex of the frog...What Gene is teaching you is how to keep a hoof locked comfortably in founder. The reason Gene is teaching terminate the bars is not because he doesn't know it...but because it is very difficult to get straight bars...it involves physical therapy to reduce tension on the flexor muscle which will lengthen and strengthen the stride. If you try to force the bars straight the heel will collapse forward (more underrun) making the horse lame. Gene's method is OK but does not peak the performance of your horse and it puts the trimming into a continuous cycle of overgrowth and correction.

Is there a channel you can recommend that shows a better treatment of the hoof?

I am very curious about your comment and would really like to know more. Can you please elaborate or point me in the direction of more info? Thanks so much.
@bmc062393 жыл бұрын
@@ANNETE784 not sure there is much more i can tell you without knowing your level of familiarity with hooves. the point i'm trying to make here is that bar deformity is not being corrected, it cannot be corrected by the farrier alone, and therefore the horses are not at peak performance.
