Personally, having watched Leo's Tallyho build, I think what you are doing is way more impressive, because for a start theres only the two of you doing everything, with one or two other people helping once in awhile, plus you are not professional shipwrights, unlike Leo and most of his crew, and this is your first boat build from scratch. I am actually awe struck by your professionalism and high standards of workmanship.

Looks like a wonderful laminate job there on the deck beams…it’s so amazing how beautifully crafted everything is. I’m so happy Obie received treats, he’s becoming famous you know!

I love the river. around 35 years ago I sailed to TAS, sailed into Cygnet, dropped anchor, then someone came out to my boat and asked me move as I had dropped my anchor on the finish line, and they invited me to join in with their race. This was a week night and they had racing every type of sailing boat you could imagine One young guy was racing an old dragon single handed. I never competed but it was really something to see. I then sailed up to Franklin and moored at the jetty. I liked it that much I got a job and stayed there for 6 months. The river is truly a special place. And I look back at as one of my best memories.

Nothing wrong with painting laminated timbers, it certainly makes more sense than the alternatives ! Laminating is practical, you can use up wood that you have and that makes it convenient and also really strong and stable over long periods and makes perfect sense on a boat. We all like seeing varnished timbers but the reality is they can be troublesome and high maintenance. Thanks for showing the scenery on Obie's walk at the end, Tasmania is very strange and looks like an alien landscape compared to where I live right now, it's always nice to see things outside the shed because it's easy to forget where you are sometimes !

Watching Tarkine take shape is a pleasure in itself. The incidental scenes and lovely music are a bonus. Thanks for your work.

The video showed an enormous amount of work and progress. Laminating and cleaning up the deck beams is no quick task let alone fitting them all. As always everything looks really good but practical going forward. I know varnish would have looked great but who wants to have to keep redoing it.

Excellent content as usual,that boat shop looks like a wonderful place to spend time in.From a practical standpoint painting the deck beams makes a lot of sense especially if you’re the one maintaining it,if the boat was built for resell then varnish may make sense.Thanks for sharing.

love your interaction with Obie, makes me smile, love to see him wrapped up to keep warm, its not like you spoil him or anything, its just he got you guys very well trained hehe i lost my three legged wonder boy, (german short haired pointer) absolute sweetie, pretty much joined at the hip, lost his leg after being hit by a car, and finally the cancer got him early this year, he was around 13 or so, mis him heaps, got loads of videos and pics, great memories, both fun and sad to watch them back as i did the other day, miss his soft velvet ears the boat is looking great, deck beams, wow, soon have a deck to walk on, i agree, i think varnich is all a bit naff, ok so nice to see the wood, since epoxy is used a lot, what about cover with epoxy resin, perhaps a single layer of fibre glass to see the wood through it, can look good and will seal the wood for a very long time, but i get what you say about any work above head, what's the answer to that, turn the boat upside down haha! i'm not helping am i??

Very nice beams, and certainly very strong indeed. Just a shame to paint them, varnished they'd have looked fantastic ! The knees' function is to distribute the force from the beam to the frames. That is why they are usually selected according to the direction of the grain that should also make a 100° curve. If you want to use wood with parallel grain - no matter how strong and dense the wood may be - it is better to laminate the knee from several layers with crossing grain directions. Wikipedia: "Wood is a highly anisotropic material (its strength varies considerably with the direction of applied force, i.e. parallel, radial, or tangential to the grain). Because wood is strongest when loaded in tension or compression along the grain, the best knees are those in which the wood grain follows the bend. For a knee with relatively little bend, it may be possible to cut the knee out of a single straight-grained board and still achieve sufficient strength. However, with increasing bend this method becomes problematic since more and more of the knee is aligned across the grain and is therefore considerably weaker. A knee laid out this way might easily snap in two under hand pressure alone, even if it is generously sized. In boat joinery constantly subject to shock and fatigue loading this method is unsuitable. To avoid this issue knees requiring sharper curves are made using methods which ensure that the wood grain and direction of load are closely aligned. This can be achieved by steam bending, laminating, or selecting a natural crook with matching grain - a "grown knee". Grown knees are generally considered as the "best" method among boat builders and have a strong traditions associated with their use, but they may not achieve the same strength as a good laminated knee." Regarding the joint between deck beam and beam shelf check the episode on youtube titled: "Carvel Planking Episode 10: Deck Beams". There is a reason why dovetail joints are used.

Did you make heavy duty knees in the other areas where there's going to be massive loads put on the boat when sailing?? It would have been so nice to have seen you guys start from day one until splashing and then your sailing adventures. You both make this project seem reasonable and nothing most people who have some craftsmanship skills can accomplish..

Just an idea; really like the jarrah knees, but in this day and age with the bonding technology available, and considering some of the comment from the Wooden Boat conference recently, would it not be better to laminate multi-directional grain panels of jarrah, and then cut the shape rather than a solid raw piece of timber, for greater strength... and you said you had to work with what you had for grain orientation. If you laminated, that is no longer a problem.

I thought the opening photo of the camber looked wrong, way too flat. Constant camber? Why? You are aware the correct curve should be part of an elipse aren't you?

It's so sad to watch amateurs building boats. Sadder still is that they don't read a few books first or go and learn from an experienced boatbuilder. There's a reason why deck beams are half dovetailed into beam shelves which I strongly suspect you will find out at a later date. Don't worry, I won't be watching your videos so you won't be getting more comments like this.
