You on the right track. Maybe take the material off the frame and replace with ink jet printer canvas sheets. Print your design on it then adhere to frame with E6000.

I like how you learn by trying, that is what a true artist does. Years ago we printed to transfer paper that matched the fabric on the shade. We Print, cut out design, use iron or mini-heat press ( continuously moving) with a cover sheet. Use a piece of wood or a hard surface to iron on. The heat on your iron or press is the hottest setting your material can handle without melting or burning. Yes you can make your own shade. Use a reclaimed one removing the old fabric or paper. This can be your pattern. Cover the frame with silk ribbon or trim first. Google lampshade template and you will find the right one for you.

I've seen a few guys who do all over sublimation use a light Spray Adhesive to tack down their sub paper to their work,It might also work for this project. And what you did can actually work I think,if you just keep the iron moving instead of holding it in one spot so long it wants to melt it could work. try it out on the other side of your practice piece ,it cant hurt.

Maybe clamps could help keep the paper in place 🤔 like the wooden clothes line holder things? Just a thought.
