The irony is that Lamy is actually REALLY good at pronouncing the "L" in her name, but Japanese people can't hear the difference so nobody knows she's saying it right.

Trying to pronounce a character your native language doesn't have is suuuuuper hard. I've broke my brain before trying to get it right with some other languages.

I'm from Brazil and for English, the /th/ sound is a stumbling block for everyone. At the same time, our tonal vowels and the /nh-/ sound, similar to /ny-/ of Spanish but not quite the same, give foreigners a ton of trouble. Even our neighboring hispanic homies. The secret is how you flex and position your tongue.

Japanese actually does have L, it's just the same as R, so depending on what your personal version of this sound is, you might have an easier or harder time pronouncing it as L. Arguably, this sound is more L than it is R, in terms of how your mouth makes it - there are two different ways of making an R sound, and the one that Japanese uses is one that's very close to being an L. English uses both forms, and many English people favour the one that isn't close to L. Since my natural way of pronouncing R is the other method, I found trying to say L instead very helpful in training to pronounce the Japanese L/R sound better.

No, these things are extremely inaccurate. If by "literally like watching an anime with subtitles" you mean "like watching anime with someone speaking Russian at you" you'd be just as correct.

I wish, but it's often at best is going to give you a general idea of what's being talked about, with a lot of imaginative reinterpretation involved. Of course that's just my experience, maybe you'll be better at filtering the junk and filling the gaps

I really enjoy that the way the Japanese brain categorises sounds places the average l/r sound right on the typical border between an English brain's distinct l and r categories, so it doesn't take much deviation from the average in a Japanese speaker's speech for this sound to be l or r. It can even change between the two in the same sentence. Very fun.

I missed the stream, but does that mean Lamy might be using that translation? I really like watching her and listening to her talk, but knowing what is being said without having to rely on the (very helpful!) translators would be wonderful so they can take a break!

I had an idea years ago for these on the fly translations to be used on the JP streams, but i wouldn't want them to be on the screen for people who don't want or need them, it could be done in a separate program that viewers could download and receive translations in a separate window for multi monitor use or overlayed over the stream, could get JP translation for EN too.

Japanese has such a fluid /r/ sound that R and L become a matter of accent. The difference between them is a few millimetres of tongue positioning - for L the tip touches the root of the top front incisors, and for R it touches further back.

That’s not the actual difference. The actual difference between a central alveolar flap (sounds like a flapped r) and a lateral alveolar flap (sounds like an l) is that the sides of the tongue are up against the molars or the structures behind them for the former and pulled down for the latter.

As funny as it is seeing the app mistake her name a lot because she can't pronounce "L"s correctly, I hope she doesn't continue using the app not only because of the AI getting her name wrong plenty of times even in Japanese, it can't even properly understand her Japanese, misunderstanding what she's saying and translating that incorrectly, making it a multilayered incorrect sandwich that would make the viewing experience even more confusing. It not understanding her saying ちゃんと発音しないと (I have to pronounce it properly) into a nonsensical word that doesn't exist コンシエイト that then got translated as "concierge" is just the tip of the iceberg with a lot of what's wrong with using it.

She's the one that has to use it, so there's nothing for you to get. Not that these apps are good enough yet anyway, maybe in another 5 years. Multiplying the inaccuracies of speech-to-text together with machine-translation results in a mess. Adding YT compression in before the StT is a terrible idea.

Multiple members have tried using live translation before. Koyori and Oga in particular have been using it fairly regularly for like a year now. I believe Fubuki was the first to try it sometime in early 2023. Okayu just tried it for the first time like 3 days ago for her Factorio streams. In short: no, you're out of the loop and didn't influence anything.
